Title: One for Bryan (Lancastertastic)
Post by: Laverdaroo on December 04, 2023, 10:38:22 PM
A pal sent me this, it’s the last bombing raid by a squadron of Lancaster’s going over the channel, it’s audio only but gives you a bit of insight as to what they were on with and how calm they all were!

Long but quite an eye opener. You may have already seen the link before but if you haven’t it’s well worth a lusten whilst doing things in the workshop.

There's also this colour film about. Think it's also a Lancaster raid out of Lincolnshire I think.

I was lucky enough to be invited to Bomber Command at High Wycombe a few weeks ago for a private tour. We were allowed into the old office of Arthur Harris, what an amazing room, everything original including the desk, chair, blotter, grandfather clock and the sqwark box. It was as though he had just got up and left the room. It smelt really musty like you'd expect something 1940’s to smell like. Harris never took a single day off in the three years he was head of Bomber Command. He started work every day at 1pm and would go down into the command bunker about 6-7pm when the bombers took off for their targets and he would stay until every Bomber had landed back at their squadron base or if shot down they were accounted for. He wouldn't leave the bunker until 5-6am the next day.

Very much a maligned man Harris, you have to delve to see the real person. He was given a job and did it to the best of his ability,

Bomber Harris like Churchill very much a man of his time - the Nazis did not follow any rules of war that existed at the time - murdering civilians and fear was their stock in trade - force is all they understood.

Theres a Barnes Wallace memorial near you Dave in Harmondsworth village. I dont know the significance of location there but came across it when visiting the churchyard in which my grandparents are buried.

http://www.sirbarneswallis.com/Links.htm many links but doesn't seem to include that site.

The history of these men and aircraft obviously intertwined.

There's a very good book on the Lancaster by Leo McKinstry "Lancaster: The Second World War's Greatest Bomber" for those interested.

I've also recently read "The Merlin:The Engine that won the Second World War", bit of a dry read but some fascinating  facts about not only the Merlin but the history of Rolls Royce and how they got into aero engines starting with the "Eagle" in WW1. Most if not all of their aero engines were SOHC and named after raptors not magicians...

Not really into all that stuff but found that video a very interesting insight.
