Title: SORN on vehicle off road since 1980's
Post by: AshimotoK0 on July 05, 2019, 06:12:06 PM
I got V5C's for two bikes I got in bits (Bomber & CB250K0) at the end of last year, which was amazingly straightforward because they were both on the DVLA register but not taxed since the early 1980's. The V5C's came with a note telling me to SORN them, which I did straight away on both bikes. When I look on the DVLA site though, they are not coming up as SORN .... has anyone else experienced this ?

Hi Ash, hope all’s well in God’s country!
Does it say ‘not taxed for on road use’ in the box which should be SORN?  I had that with my CB77 but when the mot exemption came in I taxed it at the post office and they sent the V5c off and I got a new one with historic.  All that is assuming the bikes you refer to are insured as was my CB77.

Vehicles taken "off road" before a certain date were not subject to a SORN declaration, as that system was not in place before then, similarly, accessable MOT records only started after computerisation of MOT's.

Ah I see .. thanks ... thing is when I went on line nd  it accepted my SORN declaration but nothing changed on the DVLA site online records. Perhaps I need to call them just make sure.

I had that on a couple Ash but didn't bother checking with DVLA as I had printed out the SORN  confirmation notification.

As above,  there were probably holes in the sorn scheme that missed vehicles off road prior to the initiation of it.

It first had to be completed annually too  ::) bet that didn't make much paperwork for dvla at all,  until they pulled it back to one off notification then perpetual until brought back into use.

Or, when owners are changed on V5 also, SORN comes off and is not transfered. Also, just a reminder that if you tax it (FOC as historic) you have to either insure it, or SORN it again if not insuring it.
