So, can anyone offer any further advice to assist me isolating the problem ?

I have run a compression test and all plugs show a slight improvement when I drop some oil in, suggesting piston rings could be the issue.  So whats my best bet, strip her down and do the rings or is there anything else I should check out before committing myself to that?

Ok, so since posting I have changed the oil, stripped and cleaned out all the carbs and flushed the tank out and put clean fuel in and started her up.  Cough splutter, cough splutter, still loads of smoke.  I'm starting to think its blue smoke now.  >:(

if you mean hose 2 or 3 on the link, then mine are both about the same length.

A quick check of mine, about 11 3/4 inches.

Hi guys, sorry for the delay in responding - I have been in France all week.

Its definitely not blue smoke, all cylinders are firing as far as I can tell - no misfiring, and when I cleaned each carb the floats were loose enough on the pins.  The old oil was cleaned out and replaced last year and when checked before starting the oil on the dipstick appeared clean/transluscent.

I only ran it for maybe 10 minutes at most 3 or 4 times over the course of 3/4 hours - I didn't want all the neighbours running around screaming about pollution!  Hopefully it is just burning off old gunk.

Hi, so I put in a new wiring loom over the winter, sorted out timing, cleaned the carbs, bought some new plugs and fired her up.

It took a few cranks and a bit of tweaking of choke & throttle but she finally bubbled into life.  To be fair she rattled like my grans knees, but worse.. the smoke.  White smoke puffing constantly even after 10 minutes of idling and smelling of heavy petrol fumes.

She's not been on the road for about 5 years, any thoughts insights to what this might be?  Could it be moisture, condensation, or worse than that.... valves and pistons?

I would be grateful if someone could provide some easy checks to isolate the potential probs.

Cheers guys.

Hey all, yayyy! Got all the indicators working, unfortunately though the LHS is blinking double speed so I will need to check the bulbs and connections on that side again.

I also got the headlamp working on position, headlamp, high beam, dipped, and main beam flash including all the corresponding lights in the displays.  For about 2 minutes, then they all went dead again after I switched the key off and on.... ho hum, needless to say my Sunday evening bike work finished quite promptly, almost with a spanner buried in the garage wall!

Regarding the switch, I think I am right about the extra wire.  I know there is a light blue/white and orange/white in the loom that for uk models is there for ....decoration.

Hi all, many thanks for your responses, I guess its one of those trials and tribulations that we all go through with bike work!  You are probably right about the lighting/earthing being the route of all my probs.

As an update, I have wired the greens at the back to the frame now.  I am guessing that I need to pull out all the cables in the headlamp and start again as I am probably getting the greens muddled up in there somehow.

Also, after much head scratching, the rogue and lonely wire is actually brown & black with a yellow tag, its the 9th wire from my LH handlebar switch, and I suspect the switch might be from a different model (750?/US?) as there really is nowhere to connect it in the loom I have.

I like the idea of testing back to the frame, I have a multimeter and might give this a go when the mrs is watching x factor.

Cheers

Hi all, its driving me bonkers!

I was having various problems with the electrics on my 400 and the previous owner had bodged the lot and swapped wires around making it a nightmare to trace anything.  Anyhow, I have bought and installed a second hand wire loom with the correct colour wires that matches all the diagrams I have to hand.

Now it seems I have some dodgy connections, sometimes the headlight works, then it doesn

Thanks Yoshi, might give that a bash whilst the missus is watching the soaps!

Hi Steve, saw your other post and am liking the work you have had done on the frame, I might touch base you with you to find out where you had it done and costs.

Hey Ted, no doubt, I realise I got lucky on price, but she was only half a bike with a box of bits.  I gambled, it could have been a lot of cash, a long drive, a heap of junk and a trip to the tip.  So far I think I have done ok, but she is nowhere near an MOT yet.

Hi, thanks for the reply.  Have done the timing, flushed and balanced the carbs and put new sparks in with the right gaps, so thats all tickety boo.

As far as the electrics go, its just some bits and pieces, indicators not flashing/staying on, horn not working, and some wires have their ends cut off completely!  More recently the starter is playing up.  It kick starts fine, and the battery is fully charged, but I just get the clicking from the solenoid when pressing the starter button.  Hey ho, just have to do some Columbo on it in the wee late hours.
