Title: CB550f2 carb return spring
Post by: andy120t on July 04, 2022, 04:41:24 PM
Carbs are PD,a on a 550f2 engine. I'm missing the carb return spring which shuts the carbs when the throttle is released and wondering if anyone has a spare ( or anything vaguely similar..as all the old hardware sources I used to know have vanished). It's approx 80 mms long.

Picture below to show the type of spring it is.
It's part 5 on the parts diagram.
(I assume the taper makes it easier to hold open at lower revs).

Thanks for any help...I'm not sure my elastic band replacement will last much longer, but at least the postman keeps leaving me plenty on the drive.

Are you sure they're PD's 🤔🤔🤔🤔PD's on an F2, wow someone was brave swapping to them from the standard F2 Keihin.

Yes, they are the notorious and dreaded PD's fitted to the 550 K3 as standard. They are not correct for the F2, they should be Keihin 069a's as standard. That also probably means that all the associated gubbins are incorrect.
Edit.... I know you know your bikes but is it definitely a 550F2 and not a K3? The VIN number will tell all.

Yes unusual. The earlier carbs are much easier to get on with. The diagram you show is not the carbs you have.
Pds on the 550s had two different spring versions.
Spring 5 here:

And the spring on the shaft 19 here: (which may be only some US imports)

The carbs I have are then the ones in the first of those links, with the spring as item 5 - so what I would call a normal spring, and not wrapped  around the shaft. I would fit any spring to it for now, as I'm just getting the engine running, but I don't have anything lying around that even begins to fit.

Has your swinging arm got removable blocks right on the end where the wheel spindle is? K3 has them, F2 does not.

I do have a NOS return spring as pictured but as it's been said it's for the 500/550F carbs not the PD version.

Thanks all!  For a but more background, it's a bit of a bitsa, which makes it more challenging to identify what I need. Frame is a K3, but the swingarm doesn't have removable blocks so probably didn't come out of the factory connected to this frame. The 550 engine and carbs came together from a breaker - the frame they came out of had the RHS footpeg on the frame / above the footpeg so I think that is the F frame.

Inspired by posting this, as it helps give me a kick to find things, I sorted out another box of nuts bolts etc and found a spring that will do the job but the wire seems a little thinner than the original, so I'm not sure how long it will last. Bryan, if you do have anything that looks correct please let me know.

Interesting point on the carbs then is that when I bought new cables, I couldn't get the 'throttle close' cable to fit, so I currently only have the open cable fitted - but if PD carbs are incorrect for the bike then that may explain why the second cable is too short...  I hadn't considered that the carbs weren't correct for the engine but it's omething else to look into.

I have found a spring in a bag of pd bits you can have for postage, if you want a pic send me your email.
Any other bits?
