Title: Wiring my CB550F2 from 1978
Post by: alexdecker on July 24, 2022, 05:24:53 PM
Hey

Got to the last chapter of my rebuild for now, which is the wiring. I thought I would try and contain all the questions in this thread and hope for all of your help once again.

It is still the original wiring loom, but with changes here and there. From what I can see from the diagrams, it is basically a question of matching the colors up and plug in all the wires. The switches go down to the little black box under the coils, and the gauges go to the head light together with the front signal lights.

I took a picture of the wires from the start/kill switch, as it seems that it has been rewired. The colors don't match up at all to me.

How can I go about testing what wire does what? Any tips and tricks?

2 wires go to the kill switch, should be black plus black/white.
Need to know what wires go to start button and what colour

Does it have lights on/off?

Yes, light on/off! Problem is there are three black wires in this thing. And other colors that doesn't match anything in the diagram. Is it a matter of joining wires and measuring connections with a multimeter, or?

Open it up and tell me what colour wires go to start button and what to light switcg, is this just on/off or off/park/headlamp?

I have the version with off/park/headlamp.

I opened it up and now know which wires go from where. There are 8 wires coming out of the switch. I have made a small diagram of the whole thing. I have a few questions though:

1. I connected the RH switch where the wiring seems to be original, except for a single wire. I don’t have a brown/white wire coming out of the switch, and neither do I have a brown/white wire to connect it to in the harness in the black box under the tank. I do have a spare black wire coming out of the RH switch though, which I don’t know what is for.

2. Is the switches grounded to the handlebar through screws? Otherwise that black wire could be ground maybe?

3. I don’t have nearly enough wires in the harness under the tank for the LH switch though. I have attached a picture of the remaining wires.

4. I don’t have position light wires coming out of my signal lights - that is why those cables are still free in the picture of the remaining wires (orange white and light blue white).

5. Also, I seem to have a double GROUND under the tank I can’t find in the wiring diagram. It seems to go unused?

Does any of this makes sense to you? I am using the model F wiring diagram, so it should fit my model?

Alright, continuing my ongoing theme of being a complete idiot and newbie, I was following a F1 diagram, not F2. How do I know if my model is a UK or a German or something else model?

Ok, wired things up according to the correct diagram. Two things:

I have three wires coming out of the Start button. Yellow/red, Black and another Black/Red. No idea what that is. The other Black/Red from the Headlight is already connected.

I also have four wires coming out of the taillight, but can’t find any fourth wire on any diagram. It is black.

Any ideas?

Parts book will tel you what model vin numbers went to which country.
You dont get brown/white from switch.
Black to start button is power
Black to kill switch power
Black to light switch power

Yellow/red sends power to solenoid when button pressed
Black/white sends power to coils when kill switch on

Now you need to sort the 2 other wires from lights switch, one will connect to the black when in P, this goes to brown Other connects in main or H and goes to the ip switch supply on lh switch

Hope that helps

And that rh switch doesnt need to be grounded as it supplies power to solenoid

Black red on rh switch is for yanks with no lights on off, it feeds the fusebox main fuse then headlamp and disconnects headlamp when starter button pushed.
Rear light should have
Brown
Green/yellow
Green
Black usually has a coloured ring and is indicator

Thank you! Weird that the black taillight wire is not on the diagram. Previous owner had put it into the double green GROUND connection back there.

And thank you for all the clear explanations! I will leave the Black/Red from Start button unconnected, and go on to connect the gauges and headlight!

To fully understand what you have you need to look at both US and UK diagrams to see differences.
You MUST insulate well that loose black/red as it will have positive 12v on all the time ignition is on and start button released

Yeah, checked out all the different F2 diagrams, but none have a black wire from the tail light. It worked before I took the whole thing apart, and back then the black wire was grounded. So am just gonna do that again. But would’ve liked to understand what’s going on.

I will insulate it properly! Thanks! And probably get back with a bunch of questions when I hook up the gauges  ;D

A po probably added an extra ground cos they thought it needed it!

I found my original loom had colour faded quite badly plus I had a none UK left side handlebar switch unit though it looked original in terms of age. Just no pass switch & different horn wiring.

I made up a mini loom for the rear lamp unit to retain the original colours as mine was in very poor condition.

Thank you, I would love that! You can send it to alex@alexdecker.dk. Or share it in here for others to enjoy as well!

On the wiring diagram, the front signal lights have two wires and are grounded through the green wire. On the parts list for my bike, the front signal lights only have one wire.

How are the front signals grounded. Is that through the bolts in the sides of the headlight shell that then goes to a green grounding connector?

I've only just realised yours is not a 400, I've sent the XL sheet anyway but had an auto out of office reply until early August.
