Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / NOS Honda parts
« on: April 14, 2010, 11:13:09 AM »
I thought I would share this link with you. I have had a few parts from them and they have been superb to deal with. They have alot of NOS parts for older Hondas and their prices are very reasonable. Take a look you never know you might find that elusive part you have been searching for!!! ;)

Well at long last I now have a bike that runs as good as it looks ;D ;D
I only have myself to blame and thought I would document my stupidity so that others do not go down the same route as me. :-[
It turns out that the main jets have been drilled out at some point, as they all measure within a few thousands of an inch of each other. They were almost 3/32 in diameter ::) I did check they were the correct numbers on them but failed to check the actual hole itself against the old jets, they were from some kits I bought at an autojumble and just assumed they were correct.
So hard lesson learnt, and thanks for all the help from various members. One good thing has come out of this caper, I now have a more thorough understanding of the carburation and ignition systems which should make tracing any future troubles easier.

Once again a big thanks to all for assistance,

MartinH

Right I have done some investigating this morning. I have found out that the standard jets and needles are as follows:-

Needles   272304
main jets  100
pilot jet  40

Now the other three sets of carbs I have had:-

Needles 273004
main jets  98
pilot jet  38

What I would like to know is, were the mains and needles changed to the 98 jets with slimmer needles at any time by Honda. The set of carbs I have just stripped do not look like they have ever been apart.
I only have two of the 272304 needles but plenty of the others, do you think the 272304 needles with the with the 98 jets would be ok?

To answer a few of the questions, I need the choke full on for a couple of kicks then I have to move it about half open to start it, otherwise it just floods. Air screws are 2 turns out and have adjusted about a sixteenth of a turn either way to get it running smooth, they are the solid type. The plugs are new NGK D7EA`s, this is the second set I have in now, others were so sooted up they arced all over the place.(have a jig to test my stationary engine magnetos on, just used these plugs to check them.) In response to Yoshi, no I have not checked the plug cap resistance but will do tomorrow. I cannot run the bike with the air filter in(new) it just puts out extremely black smoke from the pipes. The down pipes are all hot, do not have a non contact thermometer to check them, but this may tell me a bit more if I can borrow one.
Thanks again for the hints, as I said it all helps to gain a better understanding.

Cheers,
MartinH

Well I have had a play around with the carbs again today. All the plugs seem to be as black as each other and carb cleaner comes out of all the right places. The tickover is much better but I was getting it really bogging down at around half throttle. I pulled the choke on at this point and it just made it worse. So its obviously too rich so I checked the needles, they were in the second from top, I have now moved them to the top groove. Have not had a chance to give it a good run, only noticed the problem with bogging down when I went for the mot.
If it is no better with the needles in this position, am I correct in thinking I need to go down a jet size and move the needles back up??? Slowly learning alot about these carbs, which I suppose its what its all about ;)

MartinH

Theres not much on the website but I gather, being a new member, that alot of it is done through their magazine. Joined after giving the local area organiser a ring to find out what was going on in my area. Think it is good to go for runs with like minded people on similar bikes, the guys at work all have crotch rockets and I think they will lose me after the first mile  :o

Those are the ones I have. I was as unimpressed as you, but it seems thats the best available, without getting them specially cut. Are the lines on yours all shapes, as if they were done freehand??
KnK in the states do some but they look like they are the same thing.

As Steve said, yes the exhausts and brackets are available from Silvers. They were an absolute pig to fit, the two small link pipes are too short in my oppinion and they are out of alignment. Just had to make the best of a bad job by modding the brackets and fiddling around.
Has anyone else had this problem????

Well Steve I am impressed. The spring thing worked a treat, only I used washers not rich enough to use pennies(spent all of them on my bike ;))

Well I thought you all might like to see some pics of my progress so far. The bike was an ebay buy and alot rougher than I first thought once stripped down. The bike has been completely rebuilt and painted, apart from the motor which was ok. The first pics are as I bought it in its horrible burgundy guise. The tank and panels have been done in basecoat and orange metal flake(blast from the past !!!). I don`t like the stripes I have put on the tank so have some originals coming and will redo the entire tank again when the weather picks up a bit. Hope you enjoy and will post some better ones in the daylight. Up till now I have spent about 2 1/2 months on the resto.

Cheers,
MartinH
