Tricks & Tips / Re: Front brake: Reverse bleeding

It also helps to wrap a bit of PTFE tape around the threaded part of the bleed nipple.

A)It stops the nipple from seizing in the caliper.
B)It stops air from entering the system during back bleeding.

What is it? / Re: Petrol Tank, what model?

Certainly looks like the CD175 from the Honda catalogue of 1975/6.

Other Bikes / Re: Carb problems
« on: November 21, 2009, 10:39:42 PM »
For air leaks testing I spray WD40 around the inlet rubbers while the engine is running. If there is a leak the engine will pick up the revs slightly.

On CV carbs I use a bit of Brasso wadding to polish the slide and the inside of the slide bore of the carb. This removes the residue of petrol off the surfaces without damaging them.

I had a problem with the carbs on my wifes CB550F2 when I came to sell the bike. The engine would not start after a 6 year layoff...and I hadn't drained the carbs when I took it off the road and stored it in the back of the garage. It took a good 3 hours of cleaning to get them ready.Once they were back on the bike and recharged with fresh petrol the bike started up first time.As has been said, balancing the carbs makes a big differance, but only when everything else has been done.

Other Bikes / Re: anyone had or got one of these

That's a SOHC CB125S and was my first "proper" bike which I got in 1976 and took my test on. This is a later one fitted with Honda's cable operated front disc brake like the CB200.

The engines are pretty good but there are a couple of things to look out for:

There is no oil filter. Instead it has a centrifugal filter on the right hand end of the crank and this needs cleaning regularly however the clutch case needs to come off. It's not a difficult job but nobody ever does it.

There are no camshaft bearings. The cam runs in the head itself so if there's any hint of oil starvation the cam picks up on the bearing surface and the only fix is a replacement head.

The cam chain tensioner is manually adjusted and again tends to get neglected.

I really enjoyed my 125S and it was a great first bike.

I haven't seen one for years and have no idea what parts availability is like now.

This is in fact a CB125J...

The 'S' model had a drum front brake.I have had two in my short 34 years of biking. My first was back in 1975 which was a 1972 in blue with white lines on the tank. The second one was a green one that I bought while I was doing up my CB750F2 which was back in 1981.Good little bikes but too small for my size frame.

This was the CG125...not sure if this engine is retrofittable to other 125 single frames or not though.

Other Bikes / Re: Hydraulic Clutch
« on: November 21, 2009, 09:05:45 PM »
Of all hydraulic clutches that I have come across there is a pushrod.Few bikes have a decent oil supply to them,so I usually remove the rod, clean it with some emery cloth, check for straightness on a piece of glass and lubricate with some fresh oil before replacing.

If only I had known this when the job needed doing back in 1979.

But they didn't have the internet back then.

Front fork legs (35mm) from the CBX1000Z and the CB900FZ can be retro-fitted to the CB750F2.Everything else is the same.

The calipers, front mudguard, discs etc are all rerofittable as well.
