CB500/550 / Re: DOWNPIPES STAINED
« on: June 18, 2021, 09:20:22 AM »
Hi
A kind thank you to those who answered my question on the yellowing of my downpipes I have no idea if the exhausts downpipes are aftermarket versions as Muttley 🐕 has unfortunately had so many owners before me 20+ so its difficult to know what's been done before,

I decided to renewed the wiring loom over the winter and I might have found one of the running issues was 1 of the spade connector on the charging system (R/W wire) was not long enough so dismantled part of the old loom and refitted a original spade connector then put a volt meter across the battery with the bike running and as I increased the RPM so the voltage when up which is what it should do so hopefully that's sorted that issue

Think possibly the other reason might have been the oil was just on minimum line thought I only checked it 100 miles ago and it was further up the "within the fill range" should have topped it up then,
what a "PLONKER "  Hopefully its not done any lasting damage to the engine and gearbox / clutch

So now I check the oil level every few weeks Lesson Learnt !!!!!!

Thanks once again to all those who have help me with Muttley

Hi SOHC

I am sure this has been asked many times before, I have tried putting it into the search but nothing came up "Muttley's" ( my Honda CB550)  4-1 down pipes are all going a light heat brown colour all down the pipes is there anything that you can clean them with to keep the chrome looking nice ? Or is the bike running to hot possibly due to incorrect mixture  bike seems to run ok  or is it the unusual hot weather where having

Any guidance on this would be appreciated thank you for taking the time to read this

Hi Sesman

Welcome to the forum I joined about a year ago you wont find a better bunch of people than this they are all so knowledgeable and helpful on the subject of 40yr old CB Hondas. I am up in Northallerton area so not to far away from a fellow member.
My 550 k3 is a bit of a mongrel too and goes by the name of "Muttley" its had far to many owners in its time and has been well messed with over the years but now is getting a working overhaul of what needs done to give Muttley some form of pedigree back, In the 6 months of unlock we managed 900 + miles around the Yorkshire dales on Muttley who never let me down.

Hopefully your get your bike on the road ready for 2021 and manage to get out and about around the stunning roads of the Yorkshire dales.

Could any please shed some light on where it is possible to get the the original type & shape & open ends battery terminals. I can find angled closed end terminals on AES, The terminal I am trying to find are the shaped ones that come off the battery which are sort of shaped to fit around the frame and direct the battery lead off in a nice direction to suit battery and direction of the lead.

PILOT LIGHT FIXED ;D ;D  it was traced down to the black and green wires in the cluster loom internally broken where they join two wires into one of the same colour, Also the Blue headlight wire up to the jewel light was also broken internally.
This just goes to prove even though it was working when I last rode the bike 2 weeks ago these 40 year old wire a fragile ..................

Hi Jonny4428

Thank you for you up date on having a similar problem from what I can see the bulb holders are mint and looking in very good condition  :) I am starting to think the following,

1) Indicators work as hazard lights on the Pilot cluster that proves the inside
cluster return earth is ok just need to sort individual L/H & R/H pilot wires

2) If i apply switch power to the black wire going to the pilot cluster I don't get either the
OIL PX or the Neutral light When I apply a direct earth back to the battery via the green
wire so i am thinking is the black wire is broken up inside the cluster ????

3) If I have continuity with the Clutch lever on the handle bars is not pulled that is going to
give me a circuit back from the light back through the lever to earth ??

Hi Bryan

Thank you for your quick reply I will check that out I already have the orange wire as L/H and pale blue as R/H both indicators front and rear work perfectly just got to sort the power out up onto the pilot cluster I am sure once I can get 1-2 lights working the rest will follow
