Funny you say that, as I took a screen shot of the below from David Silver last year, says aftermarket, but marked NGK, and they were red, now I can't find the red ones, only black on their website;

Thanks, but im not concerned about making new brackets, thats not my issue, I’m just wondering how easy it is to fit new spark plug caps to the leads?

I found some similar ones on e-bay for my 500 they work just fine except the distance between the mounting points was about 5 mm shorter. I just fitted a shorort link bracket to make them fit - mine were branded as Hedler from a firm near Uttoxter, Staffs.

I’ve been a bit busy and not got around to replacing the coils yet.

I think I’m going to go for these eBay ones.

Excuse my ignorance, but I presume it is relevantly easy to for new spark plug caps on the ends?

I fitted these (Hedler) as they are probably a temporary measure until I restore my originals.
They are Primary  5.11 Ohms - S 17.55 Ohms  made by Hedler the spec is on Hedlers website p/n 540612H
I did mot use the screws shown in the picture mounted them in the original saddle at each end.
I switched the wiring so the poitive marked terminal was on the ignition feed side.
At £29.95 each did not break the bank.(inc post)
Just made a chain link type bracket for the bottom mount as they are 90mm not 100mm centres. Might need more work if you wanted to fit them facing backwards.

I think DS would tell you the brand if you asked them.

Thanks.

I’m not very up to speed tbh, I bought this bike to learn, however I bought a house shortly after and got too busy to give it much attention.

I did have the carb all cleaned and reset 18 months ago, by an independent specialist who I was recommended, and it did run fine back then, and last summer. but it sat in the garage not being used at all over winter.

Hence I’m going try and investigate this issue myself with help from my dad, so thanks for the tips!

I’ve been having an issue where the bike fires and will rev up, and stay running if given throttle, but it will not tick over on its own, it just stalls.

Any ideas?

I fired back and said I’m surprised, DS said they have been selling these for 10 years!

I asked DS about the after market ones and they said:

“There is no manufacturing information and they are a white box product. The supplier we have for these is in Taiwan.

The centres were roughly 101mm apart which appears to be the same as the OEM type we have. “

You are mistaken, as if you zoom in photo in the link in my first post, the "aftermarket" coil there's no part numbers

https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB550K-1976-USA/part_83533/

But if zoom in on the more expensive OEM type, then you can clearly see FL 703, below and yes it says TEC in description

https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB550K-1976-USA/part_370607/

If you zoom in the DS photo they look like Tec FL 703 12v as does the part description.

That is the same  Tec part number on my original looking coils.

Starting a new thread, has anyone bought these aftermarket coils?

https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB550K-1976-USA/part_83533/

Ash said I should ask everyone as the primary coil resistance should around 4 to 5 Ohms, I asked DS this afternoon and they said they do not have this technical information!

Good point!

And it seems like I’d need 100mm, not 90mm’

next question, if mine need replacing, I note the TEC ones at £70 per side, are the aftermarket ones any good?
