One of the gears, cant remember which, is known to ocassionally shear off the locating dogs.
Drop the sump pan and see if any bits in there

Its not mine, Im asking for a friend. Ill pass on all suggestions and probably help with any necessary repairs.

What is the most likely cause of a 550 not engaging 3rd gear fully. It chatters and wants to disengage all others are ok.

Well thanks for all you replies, all of which I have done.
Oil filter off, pump off, sump off replaced all and refilled pump through the pressure switch hole. Spin it up and, kerching all is good.
Cant really say what it was but priming pump seems most likely.

In all the time i have been doing them i have had 1 and only 1 that wouldnt self prime, i removed the pressure switch and filled pump through the hole then refitted switch.
Least messy way of checking oil flow is to remove cam cover end caps the the bolts holding the steel brackets down, oil should come out of the bolt holes

Ill have a look at that in the morning.

I have removed the filter and noticed that its very deep in the housing. Its very tight on the bolt and not bouncing on the spring so may not have seated correctly.
Do you think that could be the problem ?
Tomorrow Ill drop the sump just to eliminate that.

Does holding the wire going to the pressure switch against the engine make the light go out? If so, faulty switch

No, that brings the light on. I think its supposed to, it just bypasses the switch which breaks the circuit when up to pressure.

Have you got any tell tale signs of oil at the top end Gary or is the oil not getting that far (regardless of if the light goes out or not?)

No, pretty dry up there.

If you think it's flow on first establishing the pressure after rebuild, then take filter off completely, turn it over until you see the oil coming out of that supply to filter housing, then refit filter and try it for pressure then.

Cheers Ill give it a go.

Started my latest project and oil light wouldn't go out, so got a new one (thanks Julie). Still don't go out.
There is no continuity between terminal and earth so Im ruling out a short and Ive used a test light with pos to battery and neg to terminal, that doesn't go out either.
What to try next? Drop oil and check gauze pick up ? Could the filter be an issue ?

Please dont make me take the engine out  :(

David Silver don't do an engine oil seal kit for a 550F, is the 500 kit essentially the same but missing the blanking plug?

The clutch cover case is a slightly different shape 500 to 550 so the gasket probably is as well.

True Gary but this is a seal kit not a gasket kit that's being discussed.

Oops, must pay more attention.

Looks a bit different than some boxes of parts. Balance the carbs before you strobe in the ignition and connect the strobe to a independent battery mate  ;)

Cheers Graham, will do.

Well as far as the build goes Im calling it done
It runs OK but needs carb balance and timing tweaking. ( i bought a strobe Graham). Busy with house renovation atm and chasing another pile of scrap to keep me busy over winter.

CB500/550 / Re: stator overheating
« on: August 30, 2023, 04:24:03 PM »
I'm wondering if the heat is actually caused by friction. Few reports lately where the rotor casing wasn't fitted with the 2 dowels that locate it properly, this caused the casing to sit a little skew and that caused the rotor itself to start to catch on the stator and the field coils. Any sign of rubbing on those? Also make sure the dowels are in place. If they are missing when you look, unless you know they are meant to be there you'd not know they were missing.

This is exactly what happened to mine, you MUST have both dowels fitted.

That looks suspiciously  like the next  project for Gary. ;) ;) ;)

I like a challenge, but that could be a step to far. Gotta be worth £500 though even just for parts.
