I guess that the 'reasonably practical' test there is that if it's any more vertical it will foul the rear tyre, and/or break off against it.

My mounting is an angled piece that runs between the two indicator bolts (ie 1 inch or so long, then a 90 degree turn, then runs between the frame rails then another 90 degree turn/1 inch. The 1 inch bits are drilled and bolt to the indicator/ mudguard mounting holes),  so the number plate ends up similar to yours but the mount is fixed between the two ends/ arms of the frame. Doesn't bounce at all.  (It was a bracket from a gas fire that just happened to be the perfect fit).

Any chance of a picture, Ive avoided crossing between the indicator holes in case it catches the tyre.

60. Fixing of registration plate

(1) (a) Where a vehicle has been so designed that a space has been provided for the fixing

of a registration plate, the plate shall be fixed in the space so provided.

( Where a space is not provided the plate shall be fixed in the manner specified in

paragraph (2).

(2) Subject to paragraph (3), a registration plate shall be fixed vertically or, where that is not

reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practical at the front and

rear of every motor vehicle in such manner that the characters of the registration mark shall, at all

times, be visible from the front or the rear of the motor vehicle.

Could you fit a bracket on the inside of each of the indicator bolts & attach them to the B&Q strips to improve overall rigidity?

Maybe, still working on it.

The plate bracket seems a long way off a vertical number plate mount for some level of legality.

Not sure what the law is, Ill google it.

I had a little ride up to Graham and Julies place today, got a nice cup of tea and stole some some rare parts, thanks mate.
Also had a look at the number plate mounts on their mongrels. Im not keen on side mounts and did not cut the back end off my bike in the hope of coming up with something.
So on the way back I had a mooch round B and Q and bought some angle brackets. I think this will work but might end up using the brackets as templates for something more substantial.
I dont think they will flex/bend but they might be a bit "bouncy. (already had the light/plate mount)

The distance from manifold to ruler edge is 24mm if this helps.

Moving along nicely. Only real issue has been lack of parts which is stretching the budget somewhat.
Im pressing on with the 550 clutch conversion but its been "challenging".

Im thinking snip the nipple off and re solder (or solderless nipple)

If you are going to East Kirkby bike night on Wednesday, you can take one out of my hand  ;)

May well be there, whether permitting. The last one was packed, never seen so many bikes outside of a BSB bike park. Ill let you know.

500 cable has a cover over the adjuster bolt, 550 doesn't.

Yes, it has a cover for the adjuster.
