My PM from another member was there earlier today, went back to look at it for his address and it's gone, I didn't delete it and the last time something like this happened it was because an earlier version of the forum was loaded on top of the latest version for some reason.

Any ideas?

After scouring Ebay and the web I still can't find any angled battery connectors similar to what Honda use.

It's the flat 90 degree type, not bothered if they are crimped or soldered so long as they look the same.

My current (pun) cables are stiff as hell and I want to replace the positive and negative cables. Also going to replace the starter motor cable and connectors and have already ordered the cable and the connectors for that. I'm hoping the new cable is a lot more flexible.

Any sources?

CB500/550 / Fancy a conversion to cast iron discs, anyone done this?

In order to improve braking performance I was investigating have the OE discs drilled or slotted or both. Current cost to drill them is about £100 a pair. Can't find anyone to slot and drill them yet.

However whilst I was investigating I spotted some cast iron discs in Australia, yeah, other side of the world, postage etc won't be cheap but they should perform miles better than standard discs and they are drilled with a decent pattern of holes as well. Cost around £270 for a pair including postage but maybe import duties on top. You need to remount the discs on original carriers though, which is something I've done before so doesn't bother me.

I was wondering however IF cast iron discs were also available in the UK and if anyone has tried them before and if so what was you're findings, worth it or not.

I do remember they were available back in the day but searching for them gives no results in the UK.

This is the small metal ramp that fits inside the bottom half of the right hand switchgear on the CB350, CB360, CB500, CB750 and CL360.

It can also be fitted to both the CB400F, CB550F and CB550K if you want to fit one.

This feature was removed from models after the CB500, it was fitted to enable a fast idle for checking advance/retard unit operation for example. In essence it locks the throttle where you want it, this is very handy on motorways for instance when the pressure of holding the throttle open gets a little wearing. Under the switchgear is a large chrome thumb screw fitted with a chrome spring. When this is screwed in it pushes this small ramp up against the throttle pipe, the more you screw the thumb screw in the stiffer the throttle becomes. So on a motorway you just wind in the screw until the throttle stays open by itself. Most of these ramps get lost when you open the switchgear to change bars or a cable for instance. They tend to drop out and you don't notice, fit these with plenty of grease and they stand a better chance of staying in. If you have a CB400F or a CB550F/K you can still fit one by just drilling and tapping the small boss which is still fitted but never used. You need a 5mm tap. Fit the ramp, the thumb screw and spring and you now have this handy feature.

If you have the thumb screw and spring fitted and winding it in does nothing then the ramp is missing. It's just a small piece of metal bend into a special shape. It is quite expensive for what it is, common price is around $7 but it's the postage that kills buying it from the states, I found quite a few last year and bought the lot so as to split the cost to acceptable levels.

Cost is £7 inc P&P. If you buy with a set of clutch shims or felt washers I'll do them for £5.

I have 10 only. Once they're gone, they're gone as the saying goes.

I didn't ever think I'd buy a cruiser but there's just something about this bike that appeals to me. Spotted it on Dave Silver used bikes.





It was a runner in the states and it looks like it's been very well cared for. 59000 miles.

Taking delivery in a few weeks.

Member 4 Sales / Felt washers, swinging arm (500) and carbs.

Made some sets of felt washers, I've made a few sets of the felt washers fitted to the swinging arm bushes on the 500-4 and some others, part number 52145-283-000. 2 are needed.

I've also made some for the lifter arms of the carbs on the 400F, 500K,550K1/2 and 550F. 4 are needed. There is no part number for these washers as they come in a set and they ain't cheap.

As yet I haven't been able to replicate the ones used on the 400-4 choke arms, 7 are needed for those. When I can source some different sizes cutters I may be able to make these as well.

Lifter arm washer £5 a set inc P&P.

Swinging arm washers also £5 a set inc P&P. Or £2 a set if ordered with carb washers.

Most of the cost is actually postage I'm afraid, it's not cheap to post stuff these days. I've had to buy a £160 set of cutters to make these so selling these will help me recoup some of that I hope.

I need a small favour. I want to order something from a French manufacturer, really small so no large part issues. They will however only ship to the EU, they do Southern Ireland as that's still a member.

The cost is very low, around 16 euros total for all 3 parts.

I was wondering if any member who lives in the EU could order me the parts and reship them onwards when they arrive.

Oh course all expenses will be covered.

Just spotted this.

Looks like a US model as the side panel badge is different, same as the 500 as it still has a clutch cable fitted to the left side casing, so it could be a 500K2/3. Bit of a rusty bike if I'm honest.

Wonder if it's anyone on here's bike.

I've managed to source some shims in order to shim the clutch basket out so it has very little play.

The genuine Honda shims, 90458-323-010, 90459-323-010 and 90460-323-010 are 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 respectively. They are hard to find and when you do find them they tend to be expense for what they are. The cheapest 0.1mm shim is currently £23.80, a 0.3mm is £23.64 and a 0.5mm is £20.19

The problem is you don't know exactly how many you're going to need, it could be one 0.1 or 2 x 0.1 or 1 x 0.3 etc.

So I've decided to sell them in a set, mine are 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5. So almost the same. If the set consists of 2 x 0.1, 1 x 0.2 and 1 x 0.5mm then you have enough to shim out to 0.9mm and if you've got that much play you've got bigger problems than a lack of shims.

Mine are also stainless steel so unlike the genuine Honda shims they won't rust sitting in a box if you find you don't need them all.

I have to alter these shims when they arrive because the are not the right size, the inside is fine but the outside is too large to fit inside the inner clutch basket, the alteration is not easy TBH and after doing these I doubt I'll do any more. Hence the price for a set is £12 inc P&P.

I have 10 sets ONLY. Any that don't sell will go on Ebay for £15.

Oh and in case you're wondering where they go, they go behind the circlip that holds the inner basket in place. Fit a circlip and see how much the basket slides out along the shaft, if it does you need to shim that movement out. Standard clearance is 0.1mm so if you can feel any more than a midges then you need to shim it. It helps with clutch play and action when it done and also quietens down the clutch on tick over. That's why the noise goes when you pull the clutch in, it's this gap you've eliminated by pulling in the clutch.

I've just dismantled my Black And Decker workmate. 2 of the props were attached to the body using a small stud and on the top of that a round washer with protruding lugs. You knock the washer on and the lugs expand over the lug until they reach a slot cut into the lug when they spring back and secure themselves.

For the life of me I can't think what they are called. They are like the clips used to hold the side panel badges onto the panels on a 500-4 but round and with more lugs, although I have seen round ones of them used.

Anyone know the correct term so I can see if I can find some new ones. 1 broke it was so rusty.

I thought it might be spire nuts but searching that brings up something that doesn't look the same.

After unpacking the 2 boxes of parts I bought from the breakers the other day I have found some chrome starter motor covers. However they are not for the 500/550 which was what I thought they'd be. They are too small for the 750 and AFAIK the 400 doesn't use a cover.

They are clearly off at least 2 different models but I can't seem to recall offhand any other Hondas that used these type of covers.

Anyone recognise what they are off.

First one, I have 3 of these. Bolt holes are 125mm apart.









Second one, just one of these. Bolt holes are 115mm apart.











If I can find out what they are off I may have the chrome stripped and smooth all the pits out and have them rechromed. Depends what they are off and what they are worth though.

I did at least get one 500/550 one  :D

After finally shaking off the Covid I had recently I decided to buy a job lot of spares for the Honda CB550 I'd been looking at for a while. He accepted my lower offer than what he actually wanted so travelled 70 miles to pick up the pieces yesterday.

He had a barn load of stuff, all boxed and labelled. A lot of really old Hondas, CB160, 175 sloper, quite a few CD175 and a CB175 engines, he also had 3 SS125s for sale, 2 with wheels and one without. He reckoned he had the parts to complete them lying about somewhere but if you're interested give him a call. He also had a Honda I've never heard of or seen, a small sort of PS50 bike called a Honda Runabout I think. Extremely rare I reckon, I can't even find one on the web.

There were hundreds of large boxes for most every bike I can think of. If you're looking for a bit it's possible he may have one. He's since sold most of his tank collection and exhaust collection though.

He also had a brand new garage built to house his own bike collection.

He reckons most are for sale but not all. His SL125 isn't for instance. Also a Sealey 750 not for sale. He also had a bike he reckons only 3 were produced, a Sealey CB750KZ, new one on me that.

Thought I'd post some pics of what I saw and if your interested then discuss it with him. If they aren't for sale I'll say in the description.

Triumph, with some sort of engine in it that is bigger than standard, he did say what it was but I'm not interested in Triumphs so I sort of zoned out   :) I do remember it was 900 or so CC. If you know your Triumphs maybe you can tell what it is.



Honda CB900FZ, CMA wheels. Looked ok and I was interested but I prefer the later versions ike the FB and FC.



Honda GL1000, first year model so 1975/6. Very good condition, rims fine, exhaust like new he reckons.



Sealey CB750FZ, never seen or heard of one. May be for sale if you offer the right money.



Honda CB1100, I liked this one, condition was really good. He offered it to me at £6k, not sure it's worth that much TBH.



Honda SS125?. Not for sale.



Honda XBR500. He also had another with a Daytona raced engine in it still with racing number fitted. You could see the security tags etc on the engine, the racing one Not for sale and was hidden under a sheet so no pic.

Misc / Open / Anyone with a unbent 400 gear lever, need some pics

I'm trying to restore an old 400 four gear lever, replacing the rose joints, removing all the pitting on the chrome etc.

However this lever was really given to me as scrap for mucking about with and it's as bent as a Brighton resident, the linkage mount on the rear of the lever is really bent out of shape, the arm where the rubber goes is also bent backwards and the lever itself seems to be not only bent but twisted as well. I need some really good top down shots showing how the lever is shaped when it's on the bike. They need to show the mounting bush point as that's my reference point. The arm coming up from this bush mount for the rose joint etc. Some side on pics would also be good so I can ensure it's the right shape before modding it.

If it turns out ok and the recipient Ted on here gives the thumbs up on how it performs and feels I'll explain how it was done and where to get the parts to do it if anyone is interested.

As I'm altering the swinging arm bearings on my 500 there is little point having the 500 spindle fitted with it's 2 grease nipples as they won't be used. Looking for a decent 550F spindle and the torque arm bolt which goes through the rear brake plate, mines seen better days so I thought I'd replace it.

Anyone?
