Title: Busy weekend on the 400/4
Post by: Integra99 on November 27, 2017, 11:01:46 AM
Been busy this weekend, finally re painted the engine.. came out really well.

Delkevic exhaust now all fitted, carbs and airboxes in and I made a bracket for the rectifer/regulator which fits perfect.

This week its all about getting the loom in and secured, along with making plans to perhaps have it running next weekend!! A lot of the hardwork has been done so feels good to see it coming together finally.. i also need to get the modified seat base off to the trimmers... and at some point need to decide on tank colour!!

thats real nice, whats your opinion of the delkevic exhaust? i like the look of one for my 550

I havent started it up yet but Delkevic helped with the bracket and as a company I cannot fault their service. The Exhaust is 304 Stainless, nice welds, fits really well and has a removable baffle. I'm very happy with it and the price is reasonable.

I hope to start the bike this coming weekend... so will post a video¬!

Looking good  ;D ;D
I have a Delkevik on the Z650 and it sounds really sweet.
Headers are stainless and go a nice straw gold colour.

Thanks all... It will be a huge result to hear it running!

As for colour I'm all over the place with it... I have red and black Honda decals and originally was going to be yellow, then Audi RS4 Grey, then vintage white and then burgundy .. so I'm totally lost!

Going to sit with a colour chart!

+1 on the black tank,  the black sidepanels look spectacular, as does the rest of the bike

I love black on these bikes. I have just had my CB550 mongrel (CB500 tank) painted black and it looks stunning. I have gone for non standard silver foil HONDA and wings on the tank, beautiful.

Black would look really good...  I'd like a non standard colour..

I dont think it will work but I love this blue!

I did one of my 400’s in Velocette colours (sort of) and then bought it back from my Cousin.  It’s now back to varnish blue so I still have the tank and side panels in black.

+1 on both the exhaust and black as a colour !

I switched to a Delkevic for my 400 as it suits the cafe style more than the original Honda pipes and allowed me to use the originals on a proper restoration that's in progress.  I'm sure that you'll love the noise - sort of borderline hooligan with the baffle in !!!

Thanks all..  yes red and black are my favourite colors.. trouble is I have another black and red bike.. but a friend also suggested black tank and red center line.. what a tough decision ha!

Putting that to one side tonight its time to start installing the repaired loom.. last night I finished the last mashed plug..  hunting through old parts found an old rectifier from a Yamaha that had the same female 5 pin so all good.

Just gathering all my images as reminders to where it all went lol!

Will drop the seat in tomorrow morning before work to the trimmers.. then wait till pay day to order.. sprockets and chain and maybe the Dyna system.

Very much like the satin black, particularly how it picks up the light on the clutch cover and the idea you've left the plate silver :)

...stunning, I’m a bloody dinosaur when restoring my old bikes and stick to OEM colours. My loss.
Considered a deep chrome mirror / or brushed SS finish for the tank? - would take away the colour quandary!

Bit more work over the weekend, and fitted the rear indicators. I think they look great on the bike.. with no buyers of the original mounts on ebay I chopped them and used them on the project... sorry!

Solved the gear shift issue, fitted the new chain so I could have a rolling/ running bike by the weekend!

My seat comes back with will be a modern interpretation using the same base (but shortened) I hope it comes back as designed!

Once the seat is on I can think about the rear mudguard .. because at the moment I'm not sure where I'm going with it, only it needs to be a shorter version. I started to cut up my orignial but its super heavy and full of rust so will see. The rear guard needs to be effective, hold a light and number plate but look modern, slightly aggressive!

As said my build is more restomod than restoration..

Next issues to sort...

Regulator / rectifier not working correctly
Sort the rear brake switch.

Looking good... and unique.

The exhaust headers and collector look to be modelled on the Yoshi one I got in the late 70's... that was very loud and wouldn't be legal now 'm sure... sure yours will be though.

I like that improvised reg.rec mounting with the eye bolts... keeps it all tucked in. Did you have to cut some cooling fins from the unit?
I thought that my new reg/rec wasn't right at first when I flattened the battery... turned out to be a failing stator coil which was replaced with a used one....also very old, so I may yet save up for the DSS supplied pattern one as a replacement one day.

Want to hear it running.

Thanks Clem, yes I cut a small section away but its so tucked away that makes testing a real pain but I do need to check the stator coil.  The reg/rec was a cheap ebay special and I fear that may be the issue. I plan to test the orginal one at the weekend and see what happens. It charges but only when revved a little and peaks about 12.9v so might be down one of the coils.. in truth on my XS750 it did this and was also the coil and now makes a health 14.5

The Daytona Gauge has a voltmeter so its quite handy!

I'll get some video at the weekend, I loved the old Yoshi ones and why I went for this as the old Motad one was awful.

You'll enjoy the Delkevic - I have a similar bike to yours with the same exhaust, and it sounds great - have you let the baffle in, or gone for the full on hooligan experience ? !!

Fantastic.. I hope to have running and rolling this weekend. The baffle is in but I'm sure I will accidentally loose it!

Many thanks.. its Simoniz Matt engine enamel. Its a great finish but isnt fuel proof and I probably wouldnt use again for that reason.

I've since been recommended Hammerite Smoothrite in Matt finish had several people say good results.  I'm about to repaint my XS750 Engine and will try it.

I finally got my seat back. So its using the original base but with a 2.5" section taken out and re fabricated. The Upholsterers did a great job of my design and couldnt be happier with it!!

Also got the mudguard cut out so will post some pics.. its made for a challenge of what type of rear light to use but think I will go with a twin light just under the back of the seat above the mudguard.

A proud Saturday.. she passed her MOT so we can get some miles on her in the next week and then the tank can get painted.

A few things to sort out still and a couple of advisories from the MOT but all good!

Just embarking on my project, can i ask what wheel rim size and tyre combination you used please ?

Yes rims are 2.1 and 2.5 rears, tyres are 90 fronts and 110 rear. I tried a 100/120 but I was concerned over the handling and this set up looks pretty good
