Title: CB400 Oil Way Plug
Post by: Deano400 on March 07, 2018, 04:59:49 PM
Can anyone advise on the best way to remove this plug, see pic. I am assuming it's removable as the parts manual shows it has an O ring. It feels tight and I don't want to use any unnecessary force. Does it just pull out with a bit of effort? Would like to replace the O ring when I rebuild. Cheers.

Yes, just pulls out and has an o ring on.
I remove them with a small 3 jaw chuck gripped around the pin and apply a little heat if needed.

Ian

Definitely replace the o ring, especially if any extra heat was needed to extract it

Thanks Ian great help. Like the 3 jaw chuck idea. Think I'll leave the hammer action off!!  :)

Remove the bung on the over side of the engine and then take a long bar and knock it out  ;)

*cough* if you run the starter it might come flying out under oil pressure  ::)

Exactly what it does if you start the engine with out the generator cover on, closely followed by looooods of oil

Bit of background to this please. Is this just good sense to replace a 40 year old seal or are there other benefits such as cleaning the oil passage?

Thanks
Greg

How far down are you stripping the motor? Right down to bare cases? If so, yes, flush it through and dry with compressed air. If not splitting the casing, just replace the O ring, don't risk dislodging dwarf or sludge, last thing you need is for it to be loose in the oil when you run it.

As the case is split I will open them up and check for dwarfs, don’t want any singing going on in my engine ;D.

Thanks Hairy, I just love auto correct.

Best to check for midgets in the rocker cover whilst you're at it ........

Does it have one of those "Hiho" chains in there? I was a bit Dozey once and overlooked that one!

 :) :) :)

Hiho,  wasn't that used by Jeff beck combined with silver lining? As well as the obvious dwarf usage.  :)
