Title: Downpipes worth repairing?
Post by: taysidedragon on July 07, 2019, 08:22:46 PM
With my bike parts came a set of downpipes which I decided at the time were too far gone to use. I hung on to them just in case something could be done with them. I think they are Honda originals but the 4th downpipe was definitely too far gone, completely rusted out top and bottom.  The collector box has been brazed quite heavily and then painted with black and then silver exhaust paint. There are a few small holes in it now. The clamps for the separate pipes are quite bad and need replacing. It's a lot of work and would then need rechroming.
Is it worth trying to save them or have they had it?

Unfortunately, I would say they are well past it.

They would never be pretty again I would say, but someone who was keen to save money or build a ratty special / custom might possibly want to use  them. Might just be odd downpipes  from that lot that are better than someone has. If it were me I would either leave them hanging up in the shed or Ebay them. I sold some downpipes for my BMW in similar order, was just careful to get the corrosion in the pictures and mention it in description. Someone bought them - added few quid to the penny jar and someone who was probably on a budget had some use out of them. Having been there and patched paper thin pipes just to keep a bike running I wouldn't bin them. Think they are too far gone to re chrome....

I have brazed up far worse in the past and there is still quite a few years serviceable life to be got out of them for anyone that wants to.  :)

Its a matter of what you are happy with and personal choice really. Mine were not as bad as those but i changed them as although i could polish the metal- as the chrome and long-gone on the downpipes- they still rusted and i was kidding myself.

I didnt want a MOTAD or similar and as luck would have it, DSS started to do the replica set, which although are single-skinned and have two clamps at the collector-box- made me happy and took a bit of fitting, but were a vast improvemnt on what I had fitted. Come to think of it, mine were a mixture anyway of at least 3 sets of 2nd hand ones.

The exhaust , the seat, the headlight were probably my best purchases after id got my non-runner running again and dealt with the essentials  to make the bike rideable.

Some bikes on here are perfect and a credit to thier owners who have toiled and spend lots of cash achieving what they are happy with- I, on the other hand, do not have the budget but as I said- you have to be happy with what you ride. And thats all that matters!

They might appear on Ebay soon. Perhaps someone will give them CPR!

If you advertise them with a set of those exhaust bandage wrap things that the cafĂ© racer boys like.....then they MAY just stand a chance 😁😁😁😁
