Title: Candy Garnet Brown
Post by: Seabeowner on February 26, 2024, 05:07:19 PM
Looking for criticism and sources for paint.
I have an old tank that I have de-rusted and filled a few small dents. It is not really worth spending money on a professional finish as it will be another spare. I have sprayed a few bikes, but that was 40 years ago! And fifty years ago I bought a new 500 (my avatar) in candy garnet brown, so that is the colour for this one.

1.   Spray with etch primer because that’s what our factory sprayer did first when I was working. Do I need this?
2.   Spray with epoxy primer. Final light rub down.
3.   Base coat. What do I need?
4.   Spray candy garnet brown all over. How much paint do I need. 500ml seems enough.
5.   Cure.
6.   Mask for black panels at side of tank.
7.   Spray black.
8.   Cure.
9.   Apply striping decals.
10.   Spray 2K lacquer. I know it’s nasty stuff.

Intend to use aerosol rattle cans for steps 1, 2, and 10.
Will also do a test piece as I progress to check paint compatibility.
This has been on here before, but looking for sources and recommendations for paint. I only remember RS paint.
Thanks for any info/advice.

Just done the tank for Lazarus in black using spray cans, your method seems ok but I might put at least one layer of lacquer before stripes to even the transition between colours and stripe.

I would use German made SprayMax 2k gloss rattle can for the clear coat. Expensive but lovely spray pattern and superb finish if you are careful. I always wear my air fed mask with it. Some people use a Gersen disposable mask with it.

Thanks for the info Mick and Ash.
Any other sources for the candy paint?
And what about basecoat. Nothing on RS site. I could give them a ring.

Well according to RS paints their garnet brown does not require a base coat.
Other sources say UC-16-100 which seems to be cloud silver.
Am considering this on top of their silver.

Decided on a close candy match (or maybe not) to the brown.
But haven't yet got the paint for the black sides.
Any suggestions appreciated for quality black aerosols for this?
Will use the SprayMax lacquer on top.

Honda NH1 is the black.

I presume you mean 500mL un-thinned as it normally comes from a apint supplier,(thins 50/50%) ... If so yes plenty enough.

For black panel:-

There are many ways to paint candy garnet brown.
I once saw a trick with a metallic brown base and a candy gold top layer. It worked quite well although it was a bit to brown in my eyes.
Easiest is a green metallic base with a candy orange top.

I use sikkens paint for the base paint and a German company for my candies.

And yes - always do a layer of clear before starting lines and black.

Will get some of this. Bought a can of 1k lacquer to experiment with. Trying to find how much of the black finish is down to the basecoat or the lacquer finish.
Looking at the black on one of Menno's tanks, I can't hope to replicate that!

Of course you could use Piki's (Diego  ... AKA Redice sponsor on this forum!) decals instead

He does a good discount for members and his decals are spot on.

I know painting is more authentic but decals done correctly probably look a lot better than painted on gone slightly wrong.

Maybe somebody has used them ? After all, everyone uses decals on the 400F2 tanks that I know of.

That's only the stripes though but my experience is painting the black on isn't too difficult. You can get jet black base-coat from paint suppliers (like BMW use on cars). The base-coat dries matt/satin but as soon as you hit it with decent 2k clear it shines beautifully.

I have Piki's decals. I will let all know how it comes out.
