As mentioned in my previous F1 project post, I bought another 2 dismantled bikes, for spares and hopefully build another bike, or maybe even 2 more ;D
Here is the bike I am calling No.2 (https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8609/15907711242_ef78b4ed3a_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/qeHbku)Ebay purchaseno2$_1 (https://flic.kr/p/qeHbku) by nitram2010 (https://www.flickr.com/people/46578358@N07/), on Flickr
I rebuilt the engine and used as temporary engine on first bike as its engine was quite bad and needs major attention.
In meantime, Pete on here sold me a dismantled engine which I can use on this project.
I am planning on a mild cafe racer style using standard tank, which I have already had painted.

and probably standard seat.

Whilst getting K8 bits powder coated, also got them to paint wheel rims from first bike, that I replaced.

Any views on whether to go with black zinc plated spokes, normal zinc or stainless?
Unfortunately cost is a consideration :-[
-
Careful with rims that have been power coated. Most of the time they blast then and throw a coat of powder on. To do this right you have to dip the rims to get the chrome off. Had a few wheels lose there powder on the tyre changer.
-
Mind boggles with that Trig.Ok today we have tyre changer machines but what are they like with good old tyre levers?

Still have to use a tyre lever with a tyre changing machine.

Really?I guess just for the initial start, if thats the case why spend a fortune on the hardware? :o

Ordered up some bits from caferacerseats yesterday and parts arrived today ;D
First impressions on quality are good, hope they fit OK :-\
Bought some bits on Ebay and mudguard off their website as is cheaper than Ebay.

Looking good. I'd go either stainless or std zinc with the wheels. Are the hubs black?

I would go stainless as there so much easier to keep clean.

Not sure whether to fit rear sets yet, but quite like look of knurled foot rests.
Has anyone found steel or ally pegs that are knurled and match original hinged brackets?
-
Hi bought a few things from cafe racer seat and tanks picked them up from shop .there a good set of lads .do those mirrors fit those bars ok .I have the same bars .I've seen these rear sets look quite good

I havnt tried fitting mirrors to bars yet, but as they are not expensive, thought I could use on another bike if dont fit.
Who is selling the rear sets you showed?
Where do they attach to frame?
-
Best rearsets I've seen Martin are the Tarozzi sets - not cheap but nicely engineered and a great fit...
-
These rear sets are tarozzi you have to make a bracket to fix them to frame .I've got a stencil.off a guy in the states who as put them on is bike .rear sets are from fast from the past in the states .
-
These are them fitted to is bike .you get the idea better now than just the pic of the stencil
-
Does the brake lever touch the can?
-
Looks close dont it Steve? ;)
Cheers

Last time I looked at the Tarozzi set they came with a clamp bracket that fitted the rear exhaust hanger / main frame downtube. But I think this may be specific for the K0-K6 models and possibly not compatible with the F frane configuration..?

On a whim I bought this master cylinder on Ebay as was so cheap at £6.25 inc postage from China and was curious!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251641725990?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251641725990?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)
Paid for it on 24/12 and arrived today!
Doesnt give bore size in spec, but will dismantle to check.
Quality doesnt look obviously bad, but cant fully assess materiels used.
It is probably not robust enough to use on a bigger bike, especially with m6 mounting points, but there is a remote chance it could be adapted :P
I know what I would tell anyone who asked me if it would be suitable :-[
Maybe I could use the reservoir ;)

Is that 'PERFORMANCE HOUSE' I see down the side of your leathers in the background James?
Julie
-
Ha ha no Performance Harley Davidson...
-
And there was me thinking you raced for a friend of mine that owned Performance House where Shakey Burn started. ;D ;D
-
Thats awesome thanks Martin. Trying to work out the correct mastery cyl diameter for the twin Grimeca's on the Harley...this helps a lot...
Glad it helps.
The relationship between sizes is sometimes counter intuitive, I had a Norton Commando for almost 30 years, originally they put on a larger bore master cylinder as they didnt want people locking front brake.
Later owners sleeved cylinder down to get improved feel and braking.
Obviously with rear sets the leverage changes with the distance force applied from pivots (fulcrum)
I knew they taught me all about it at Technical College for a reason, just didnt realise at the time ::)
-
Has anyone tried converting an F1 seat to cafe racer style?
Here is the newly powder coated seat pan and painted cowl.
Im thinking of getting an adapted cushion/seat cover with raised rear section and single seat area of about 350mm?
The advantage is no cutting of original frame and retain hinged seat with storage compartment.

mmm just in garage and my Triumph STR next to F1 and a thought occured.
I wonder if I could adapt brake/pedal/rest from Triumph to fit F1 Cafe racer?

Am also considering using K2 foot rests on the wrong way round ie left and right swapped and turned to move rest rearward?
Would not move a great deal back, would need modified gear and brake pedal, but might be simpler and could revert to standard fairly easily.
Anyone tried?

I was meant to be focussing on K8, but seemed a good idea to do wheel rebuilds and wheel bearings in one go :)
Decided to go with black gloss powder coated rime, zinc plated spokes and polished hubs (lightly)
Here is the rear wheel rebuilt, just need to true.

Thanks for comments, the colour is quite interesting, as looks like a straight orange, but in sunlight sparkles. Im looking forward to seeing how it comes out :)

Dropped off seat pan, an old seat cowl and seat foam to trimmers.
Plan is to form a single seat shape that blends into cowl on original base, so saves the original hinge feature and storage compartment.
Trimmer will reshape foam and I will try before commiting to shape.
-
I bought a standard f1 seat cover and thought I would fit to pan and try with orange seat cowl

I do like to have options and in the past have had different coloured /shaped tanks to mix and match.
I did seriously consider buying a Ducati Monster with extra tank/panel combinations but wasnt so keen on riding position.
Just picked up the modified single seat to try out and used my stock yellow F1, although plan on using with clip ons and modified pegs.
Trimmer suggested trying first before he made cover.
I like the idea of keeping hinged seat and F1's storage compartment, so idea is to modify foam/cover, but with standard base.
Here is what it looks like.

It actually felt quite good, as lower, but with support to stop you sliding back.
I had to try to imagine what it would be like with clip ons and foot pegs further back, but feels about right.
Took back to trimmers and should be ready end of next week ;D

The engine that came with my first F1 was in a terrible state, so used another engine in rebuild.
Major problem with the engine was a broken right front top enging mounting on crank case, very heavy bore corrosion and eaten away head.

Thats the great thing about customisation, the variations are endless ;D

While I wait for registration on K8 to come through, thought I would start on frame.
I have two to choose from and started looking at the one that had been powder coated but scratched a bit.
Closer inspection revealed the centre stand mounting had been repaired.

I do like the look of Cafe racer style fairing and already have a spare BMW R90S style one, wondering if I should weld some brackets to frame head stock at this stage so that a neater fairing mount can be used?
Any suggestions?

Hi Martin what are you doing with your top yoke .if your running clip ons.
-
As I want to keep options open to be able to change back, I will leave standard mounts, may fit a short section of 7/8 tube.
I know many Cafe Racer style fans will disagree, but I am aiming not to make any changes that cant be undone ;D
-
Started the frame fit up and found the swinging arm caps would not stay in place, struggled for 20 mins so put to one side.
Went back to it later and was able to fit with a bit of jigling :o
Test fit of clip ons and dummy tank found that steering stops need modifying to stop bars hitting tank.
Trouble is the stops on lower yoke are quite narrow and drilling will weaken.
With forks in place tried mudguard fit :-[ the one supplied and painted is too narrow :'( School boy error not to check before painting!
Now starting to doubt plan, maybe better to do as modified F1 with standard bars and front mudguard?
-
Decided to modify steering stops.
To save having to remove lower yoke, it can be done in situ.
Needed extra long drill to drill from front (need longer drill to allow chuck to clear yoke) and then drill M4 tapping size 3.3mm from rear.
Used M4 Allen screws and seems to do the trick :)

Checking main bearing clearance with Plastigauge.

I was pretty p........d off that the front mudguard I had painted was wrong size.
Thats the problem with assuming :-[
I do love the colour and did not want to start from scratch.
The mudguard had built in side sections designed to be clamped to fork sliders with large Jubilee type clips.

As I bought a new genuine mudguard for K8, thought I might be able to use the old bridge in conjunction with modified fibre glass guard.
This would also provide brake pipe support.
Trial cut the new fibre guard with junior hack saw, cut ok but difficult to control.
I wanted something that would not damage the new paint too much.
Used masking tape to mark out and tried a trial cut with minin diamond coated disk in Dremel type tool.
This worked well, but creates loads of dust.
Cutting a curved line is not easy and not perfect, but happy to compromise.
A slall amount of paint flaked, but hopefully will touch in ok.
Could not use existing rivet holes in bridge but drilled 2 new fixings and needed spacers between bridge and guard.

Rear set position doesnt seem too bad, mind you only done 4 miles :)
Started losing power on way for MOT, in heavy rain, but made it there.
All sorts of questions going through my mind as to possible cause.
Seemed like fuel stavation, maybe, blockage?
Took 45 mins for MOT, will it be OK?????
Passed MOT ;D
I only live about 2 miles from test station, fired up bike wondering if it will get me home.
Started to pull away but not reving, shit!
Felt like throttles not operating, sort of slipping, then realised the rubber grip was slipping on throttle tube ::)
Probably the rain was not helping.
Gripped it a bit harder and fine, nice to find a simple solution.
Never used grip cement before but looks like I need some!

I was told once that hair spray works for that problem, I ain't got any hair left so don't know!!!

I had the same problem. I got fed up with the jubilee clip holding it tight after a while so I stuck it on using Sticks like sh*t (from Screwfix). Despite the name, it sticks very well

Just looked that up. They left off "to a blanket" as my dad used to say

Me too real nice outcome and I don't go for cafes
Well done

I have done about 60 miles so far, but some issues.
Small oil leak from head gasket area at front left, suspect the worst especially with 836 conversion, may have to invest in frame kit to save having to remove engine :(
Rev counter over reading, compared using electric drill and it was reading off clock, when others were reading 8k, but unfortunately they are the K type ie not green :( Suspect oil or grease contamination.
Bike broke down, complete loss of electrics, luckily I could coast into convenient lay by :D
15amp fuse had gone black, used a 7amp to get home 8)
Neutral light on all time, ordered new switch from DSS and also a 2.5mm O ring to try, as needed a switch for next project anyway.
Anyone tried the weld less frame kits?
Luckily I have other bikes to use. 8)
