CB500/550 / Rough Running advice needed -- at wits end
« on: September 19, 2016, 08:30:46 AM »
My 500 Four is running like a pig and I am at my wits end trying to fix it  !!

Symptoms are will not pull away from start properly and have to rev and slip clutch like hell to get going. It's so bad I cant ride it because it's dangerous when pulling in to traffic etc. I also think there is a lack of power overall, the motor just doesnt feel "zingy", feels really lumpy and feels underpowered.

Since my rebuild its got much worse. Things is have checked/changed

New Points
Timing spot on
New plugs
Good spark at all pots
Valve clearances spot on
Carbs well balanced
Float heights about 3mm below carb flange so also bang on
New pistons and rings so not a compression issue

I have come to the conclusion I have a carb problem but would like some thoughts and help. Other symptoms I have noticed are

Plugs 1,2 and 3 are very dark and sooty (rich) but plug 4 looks good
Advancing timing to nearly max advance point at tickover makes idle smoother
Moving air screw from 1/2 to 2 turns out seems to make absolutely no difference to behaviour

So bottom line she seems to be running very rich particularly at up to 1/2 throttle

When I did my rebuild I did not replace all the jets just cleaned them and replaced O rings so now I have ordered a full carb kit of all new jets, pilot screw, float valve etc so while i wait foe delivery I want to also to do more checks on the carb bodies.

Is it possible I may have a blocked idle circuit? If so how can I check there are no blocked passages anywhere in the carbs. I am not sure what hole connects to what as I cant find a Keihin eploded diagram. What holes should I squirt carb cleaner down to see if the passageways are clear and wher should it come out??

CB500/550 / Coil Testing
« on: September 10, 2016, 06:00:54 PM »
Beginning to suspect I have a coil/ht lead issue.

The bike is just not running right and feels flat also tick over is hunting around.

I have new points and condensers, timing is spot on, new plugs, carbs fully rebuilt and balanced spot on so coils/ht is about the only part not replaced/refurbished.

Is there any easy way of testing them before I bite the bullet and replace them? I know you can check the primary and secondary resistances but I seem to remember reading somewhere that there is more to check

CB500/550 / Ignition Timing Question 500 Four
« on: September 09, 2016, 05:05:07 PM »
I just restrobe checked my timing and to get the timing marks to line up for 1 and 4 I have had to rotate the main plate as far as it will go anti-clockwise.

This seems a bit odd - have I done something stupid somewhere?

CB500/550 / Front Light H4 Fitting
« on: August 21, 2016, 08:15:09 AM »
Like Ash i am also looking at a lighting upgrade and am considering the Philips bulbs but problem 1 is my bike is  a US spec with a sealed beam light.

Has anyone got a recommendation for a replacement glass that will take a standard H4 bulb as a a starter

CB500/550 / Insurance again........
« on: August 02, 2016, 03:28:59 PM »
Just changed my Trophy SE (1200 139Bhp big tourer) for a MT09 Tracer Yamaha.

Just been quoted £290 by Peter James!!!!! this is crazy compared to what I have seen other members paying (I am 62 with 8 years NCB and no conviction or bumps)

I also got a quote just for the Yam for £111 from Bennetts which was more reasonable but then they asked if my Garage had windows- when I said yes they said they couldn't insure me.

Huhhhh maybe now I cant get house insurance cos my house has windows!!!

Even though the windows are UPVC locked double glazed units in the garage still no deal. Apparently my garage is now not  a garage (try that one on my wife !!)

Anyone got any good recommendations for modern and classic multi bike insurers

CB500/550 / Fuel tank sizes and reserve
« on: July 19, 2016, 03:23:28 PM »
Having some curiosity around my tank caapcity and reserve switching.

Just went on to reserve and filled up and it took 1.52 Gallons (Imperial).

Looking at the 500 spec it says the tank capacity is 3.1 Gal with a 0.9 Gal Reserve so I make it 3.1-0.9=2.2 Gals to reserve.

Am I missing something, I seem to have "lost" 0.7 Gal somewhere

Also I have noticed the jump to reserve is very "instant". I actually got stranded at some lights as I didnt notice the usual coughing and spluttering as reserve was needed - it just died

And YES it's an original Honda tank, I'm not quite that stupid - at least yet - but I am sure that day will come !!!

Now that the deecnt ingredient has been removed from Nitromos I have been looking for a decent stripper (no pun intended).

Used this from ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Paint-Stripper-1-litre-Restorations-Car-Bodywork-Metal-Remover-Wood-Furniture-HD-/291808738692?

Results on varnish on my rear hub excellent.

CB500/550 / Mirror vibration Prevention?
« on: June 19, 2016, 12:51:45 AM »
Anyone any tips to help me see behind me above around 6k rpm

All I get is a blurry view of the world behind

I was thinking of some kind of vibration insulation below the mirror mounts but as they are screwed in to the bars not sure if that would help

How about rubber around the handlebar mounts ie under the idiot panel

CB500/550 / Cleaning rear hub
« on: June 14, 2016, 06:28:30 AM »
Anyone used any magic potions on rear hub. I want to clean mine up better but can't get in there cos of the spokes. I tried alloy wheel cleaner (Autoglym) but just wondered if anything else would do a better job

CB500/550 / Clutch float measurement
« on: June 12, 2016, 08:45:37 AM »
Just replacing clutch and I see it says in the Honde service manual to use a dial gauge  to check for looseness

As I don't possess one is there any other way to check to see what size space I need

CB500/550 / Another clutch ?
« on: June 05, 2016, 07:46:32 AM »
Are the friction plates the Sam for K0/1/2/3 etc

I read somewhere Honda did some clutch mods at some point to overcome clutch slippage issues

CB500/550 / Sticking/jumping Rev counter
« on: June 04, 2016, 12:29:27 AM »
My rev counter gets to 5 and sticks then jumps to 6 and above 6 is a bit "sticky"

The bike is just on the road after many years lay up

Is this likely to diminish with use, will a liberal squirt of wd40 up the drive hole help or do I need to bite the bullet and pull it apart
