Title: Taper roller bearings
Post by: FATAL on October 22, 2007, 06:20:33 PM
I finally got around to fitting taper roller steering head bearings to my F1, but the steering stop lugs are a bit too low to engage with the stop on the head.  ??? I assume this is because of the large thick washer that is fitted at the bottom of the stem, and then the rubber dust seal. The original bottom washer is very thin, and I'm thinking that if I refit a standard size (thin) washer instead of the very thick one then all should be tickety boo.

Has anyone had similar problems when fitting these bearing kits?

P.S. this restoration project seems to be taking forever!

Hi Fatal,
Where did you get the kit from, I got mine from David Silver Spares and it fitted no problem, used the thick washer on the bottom yoke, have you drifted the bottom race right up into the steering stem ? I had to clear a layer of powder coating from mine before fitting it.

Cheers

Den

Thanks Den, I got the bearings from Wemoto. Looking at your photos It seems as if I haven't quite got the bearing down far enough, your rubber seal appears to be more compressed, but the washer on yours looks the same. I think perhaps there was a little overspray of paint at the bottom of the stem. I'll take the bearing off and double check everything. I'll probably need to reorder a bearing as it looks a right tw*t to get off!

D'ohhh I've just had another look, I've not set the bearing cup far enough in the stem  ;D, (been suffering from a virul infection so not been thinking straight) all sorted now. I must pay more attention  :-[
