Title: Two questions..
Post by: AndyD on March 09, 2020, 06:09:56 PM
Finally reassembling the 400 engine and have two questions I'm hoping for a bot of help...

One for Nurse Julie - you very kindly sent two O rings for the outer dowels on the crankcase to sit into the base gasket. I enlarged the holes to suit these but when lowering the barrels over the studs, the barrels 'rock' on these and before I tighten anything down I wanted to make sure that's OK and that they will just squash down without problem?

Secondly with the large O rings around the bores, these don't seem to want to stay in the grooves but tend to roll down the bore a bit.
Does this cause any issue when clamping the barrels down - i.e. do they just slide into the right place as the barrels are fitted or is there a risk of them getting snagged and out of position / shape?

Cheers,
Andy

Hi Andy. Have you got the dowels in place with the O rings around the dowels? Q2... A smear of red rubber grease on the big O rings around the sleeves usually holds them in place.

Yes, dowels in place and I enlarged the holes in the gasket to sit around the o rings. I wasn’t sure if the o rings would squash down enough as they feel quite ‘lumpy’ when the barrels are lowered down.
Probably just me worrying too much but thought I’d check if that was right or if the o rings should sit flusher with the gasket etc.
I’ll use the grease as noted

If the dowel and O ring look like this Andy, it will be fine once all torqued down. This is my engine with the same O ring and I have no problems at all.
