Title: Tail light mount.....
Post by: Athame57 on September 07, 2021, 11:05:19 PM
I'm thinking of doing some cosmetic work on my tail light assembly, I have an F2 model. Is it supposed to be chrome or black ...or optional?

My 1976 model is till wearing its original guard and mounting, which is gloss black.

I believe UK models were black, US were chrome with different rear lamps but they are interchangable as regard  the rear mudguard mounting.
Rear lamp mounting lugs are different distance apart.

Whilst I appreciate that we still have freedom of choice, long may it continue, my personal preference is for gloss black mounted on polished chrome, I find that the two finishes complement each other well. I have seen in the past where a chrome item from a different manufacturer/plater has been mounted on another chrome piece, and somehow they don't do each other any favours.
But, it's your bike and your choice, just enjoy what you do.

If you want a chrome lamp bracket - Alan found this source -

I bought one for my US 500k2 and its good quality and cheaper than rechrome

I’ve got a job lot in at Prestige, so may ask for this to be added to the items they currently have. They were very reasonable on cost and judging by the cost of headlamp ears rear mudguard and chain guard I’d be surprised if the rear lamp mounting will cost more than a replacement. I’ll report here soon.

I’m back home next week so will measure that brake spring.

Did you end up trimming the top brackets down Phil? I bought a new number plate and it's still not wide enough, if I trim the ends down to just about where the bolt hole slots are I'll get away with it.

On mine it went straight on Ken - plate is 9 inch wide by 7 inch high

Be ok if you have a 3 figure number plate though as they are wider.

Early August. They have had two weeks holiday, but are back now I believe.

Philip, or Phil. Though I often get called worse by family and friends.

Incidentally, just checked my diary, my visit to Prestige was 15th July, but I do know they were on annual holiday for two weeks in August. I think they returned on the 16th, so your mate was a little unlucky. BTW it’s 6 months turnaround at Prestige at the moment. Agbrigg did some zinc plate for me in 2 days. Not sure on chrome, but I’m going to give them a try too.

Yes, still need that drive plate if you have it. I used countersunk screws in the end and reduced their depth slightly using a grinder. I’ve made a right mess of the original plate though getting the thing centralised.

I repainted mine in satin black and managed to find an excellent second hand rear fender from America at a very reasonable price.

That looks neat in a satin finish.

My tank and side panels looked as if they had been done with a rattle can in red and looked naff, I kept it red but metallic, check the difference.

Very nice looking paint job you have - I do like red metallics.

I had a mate who did a paint job in Rolls Royce Regal Red it made the bodywork look like it was inch thick steel.

I thought the flat red was a bit bland plus because it was a rattle can finish and I had to be careful I didn't spill any petrol on it as the paint was wrinkling around the neck anyway. The header pipes were a bit too far gone so had to coat them with heat resistant paint. I have bought a few bits from America as they are cheaper even with import duties as one example the rear fender was £64 including the plastic part,  the brake caliper is brand new as well, from America and came with, new bolts, the caliper, pads, bleed screw everything except back plate, that's enough about mine I don't want to Hi-jack this thread.

Parts from the USA sound good do you have too pay duty post purchase when they arrive in the UK?

Sometimes yes sometimes no depends on cost plus how its described. You need a contact in usa to act as a middle man to make it cheaper. Worst case is

HMRC charge 2-3% import duty on cost
Then they add on postage to cost and tax
Then they add 20% vat to that total
Then to cap it off Post Office charge £8 to collect the money, parcl force charge £13 and ups/dhl/hermes et al charge whatever they feel like at the time

I've bought a lot of stuff from china and never paid any duty on them, grommets and spacers mainly cheap stuff but can be made to fit, the most duty I had to pay was on the brake caliper which if I remember was £20 but even so it was still a lot cheaper than Silvers and Ebay, it all depends really what it is but import duties are not as dear as people think.
