CB500/550 / Re: The Motorbike Show - ITV4 Last Night
« on: June 12, 2011, 03:33:20 PM »
Caught it on thr ITV player after my brother asked me if I was watching it. It's OK, bit annoyed with the spend money no problem resto, when the bike looked OK before they started, but that's TV.

Henry Cole? 30 years an adventure motorcycle rider? Never heard of him. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0170567/

Put Guy Martin in charge of it and I would die laughing!

Hi and welcome, nice story and nice 400/4. Is the GS500 going to be outed, then? I've had a Yamaha XTZ750 for two years which I love and a  Honda CB550/4 which I have just got on the road, using it for my commute (all of 12 miles), great fun so far. But do I sell the Yamaha? I am not so sure...

Still a member of the Yamaha XTZ750 forum, been on a couple of ride's/meets with other forum members, well worth doing. We did Bala in Wales last year and there was as meet in Masham this year, also Salisbury plain is a favourite, plus regular runs to France for battlefield tours. These are all organised on the forum.

I'm just on the border or Wilts/Hants for so a  South Coast meet would be good for me. How about a meet for those in the South West at the Haynes Museum? Or Sammy Miller?

By the way my newly-bought CB550F2 passed it's MOT today, with no advisories. Just need to tax it and I am on the road!

Thanks to you both for your comments.

I do love my XTZ, they are great bikes to ride, but the seat is very tall and they are very heavy (especially if you can afford to fill the fuel tank up!). The engine seems to me to be really good, I can zip past traffic, in top gear if I want to. Mind you, I've never ridden one of these superbikes, so it may all be relative.

My XTZ did blow the regulator, they all do, but now that it's fixed it is ultra-reliable. Fingers crossed.....

Not a lot of help but I have a similar problem, stripped the hand grip and it had no wiring at all to the horn switch! Have decided to completely replace that switch with a round micro-switch. By the way, bit confused as to why all the black wires supply + volts!

The shaft stays still, it's the sprocket that moves when you rotate it against the shaft, just back and forth a tiny bit.

CB500/550 / Should there be movement in the front sprocket?
« on: May 03, 2011, 02:38:28 PM »
Hi all

Just arrived as a new member, bought a CB550, I was checking it out and found that there is a small amount of "float" in the front sprocket, if moved it will just rotate back a forth a mm or so, it's well screwed on but is this movement normal?

Thanks in advance  :)

Yesterday I replaced a leaky front fork seal, the previous owner had someone change one side but not the other, and had a look at a problem with the horn, it has no wiring from the push button! I wonder what other mysteries await me....

Hi all

Just bought myself a Honda CB550F as a bit of a project, so thought I would join the forum. I also have a Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Tenere that I have "improved" over the last couple of years, and the guy's on the XTZ forum have been really helpful, so I have high hopes of this forum.

Biking wise I had a Suzuki TS125 as my first bike when I was 18 (a long time ago), this was stolen and wrecked, so I bought a Suzuki GT185, which went when I bought my first car. I did not give any thought to motorbikes for 30 years, going through various other hobbies (bit of autotesting in the wifes car, photography, model railways ((sorry)), community radio which I am still heavily involved in).

Then one day one of my work colleagues, Doug, brought his daughters Royal Enfield Bullet 500 in to work, and told me he was selling it. It took me a couple of weeks to decide, but I bought it, as my re-introduction to motorcycling. It was OK, I enjoyed tootling around on it, but I struggled to start it with the kick start only, and it was pretty slow....

So I bought the Yamaha XTZ and then sold the Bullet to pay for it (back to front I know, but that's Ebay for you). The Yamaha had been sprayed all matt black, to cover up all sorts of issues, so over my ownership I have changed all the plastics and the tank and it looks a lot better now. And it goes like a train.....

Last year I bought a Honda CB250 which was military green, ex-Italian Army I was told. It was bought as a non-runner, needed electrical work. For some reason the bike and I just did not click, and it was sold, just before Christmas, to pay the bills...

But I kept looking at Ebay, and found this CB550F, 1979, just a few miles away. There is a bit of a story here, but I have to go back to work, suffice to say it is now in my garage, awaiting a bit of fetlling before an MOT, tax and Insurance, then I can use it...
