CB350/400 / Re: Front sprocket
« on: April 10, 2020, 08:26:18 AM »
Thanks both,
It all looks correct and as shown in the diagrams etc. so maybe the last guy just tried to reduce wobble by adding a couple of washers.
I guess it just seems really strange to me as all my other bikes seem to have pretty 'tight' sprockets.

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Front sprocket

Hi all,
When I took off the front sprocket on the 400 there were 2 or 3 broken very thin washers in the general greasy gunk.
I can't see any reference to these on the parts diagrams so wondered if they were supposed to be there or something the previous owner added for some reason?
Putting the sprocket on with the retainer the sprocket is very wobbly - is that normal on these bikes?

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Re: Oil Pipe / hoses
« on: April 06, 2020, 12:21:30 PM »
Thanks for quick responses
Mike - Quite agree and I always use good quality hoses, I just wasn't sure if this oil pipe was anything 'special' as the one in mine is clearly a later replacement but is quite a thick braided hose but in poor condition. I have a box of bits and pieces of hoses from previous restorations and some have the right id so I just wanted to check if anything above and beyond was needed for this hose.

Julie - many thanks for the link - I'll shoot to ebay and order up hoses from them.

I guess the garden hose used on the engine top breather wasn't a period upgrade either so I'll replace that as well!

Cheers,
Andy

Morning all,
Another question if that's OK...
The short pipe by the oil filter is a bodged bit of crumbling hose on mine and seems to be NLA as replacement - part 69 on attache image.
Is this just 'any old' bit of fuel / oil hose or does it need to be anything more?

Also replacing the various other fuel / vent hoses and assume that the description in parts books show the internal id and overall length. od being unimportant - is that correct?

CB350/400 / Re: Head Bearings
« on: April 01, 2020, 05:57:42 PM »
Agreed - it's all a bit baffling.
Having fitted tapered rollers on quite a few bikes recently, none have had any issues at all and just fitted.
The 400 ones are a nightmare but I've now got them fitted with the thin washer at the base - without this I think the lower yoke would snag.
By not fitting any spacer or seal at the top I can get just over 2 full turns of the adjustment screw which feels quite secure but still doesn't seem quite right.
I'm fitting these for now to get the bike together and assess how it all comes together so not too worried if they need 'revisiting' later on.
Just really surprised how these can presumably be sold in quite significant numbers but don't really seem to work - somehow it seems they should really just be 'shorter' overal so there is more thread available at the top.
Oh well, on to the next problem...

Andy

CB350/400 / Head Bearings

Just about winning a battle to get head bearings fitted on the 400 and am a bit baffled that it is so awkward.
Went for the All Balls kit which seems to be the most common offering and I have read lots of threads about problems of reduced thread for adjuster nut so tried to proceed as carefully as possible.
Spent ages again Googling on this before starting but there seems to be no definitive answer anywhere regarding the spacers etc.
In the end I found that only the thin spacer on the lower bearing could be used otherwise the top thread is virtually non-existent.
Even with this, it is only just enough and if the dust cover and washer are both fitted the amount of thread is very small.
One thread on the US site showed flattening the raised teeth on the adjuster screw and omitting the spacer (and I think dust seal) to get a bit more thread.
I'm going to play some more with this still but it just seems crazy that a common replacement part is so tricky and maybe dangerous as I guess there needs to be at least a reasonable thread for the adjuster screw to fix properly.
Any thoughts?

Andy

Hi,
Has anyone tried these?
About to start rolling chassis build and had also seen these and wondered if they are any good
Cheers

Yes, dowels in place and I enlarged the holes in the gasket to sit around the o rings. I wasn’t sure if the o rings would squash down enough as they feel quite ‘lumpy’ when the barrels are lowered down.
Probably just me worrying too much but thought I’d check if that was right or if the o rings should sit flusher with the gasket etc.
I’ll use the grease as noted
Cheers

CB350/400 / Two questions..
« on: March 09, 2020, 06:09:56 PM »
Finally reassembling the 400 engine and have two questions I'm hoping for a bot of help...

One for Nurse Julie - you very kindly sent two O rings for the outer dowels on the crankcase to sit into the base gasket. I enlarged the holes to suit these but when lowering the barrels over the studs, the barrels 'rock' on these and before I tighten anything down I wanted to make sure that's OK and that they will just squash down without problem?

Secondly with the large O rings around the bores, these don't seem to want to stay in the grooves but tend to roll down the bore a bit.
Does this cause any issue when clamping the barrels down - i.e. do they just slide into the right place as the barrels are fitted or is there a risk of them getting snagged and out of position / shape?

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks,
Seems to be the case that they are readily available as part of a set but not on their own.
I'll keep looking

Hi all,
Is there a good source for the carb top gaskets for the 400/4.
I've got everything else from Gerben so just need these to complete the bits needed.
Cheers,
Andy

Thanks all,
I think it's probably something erroneous that just got dropped in the engine box but just wanted to check before closing up the crankcases.
Ka-ja - agree it looks like some kind of cap / plug but I couldn't see anywhere that it could have come from either.
Dave - the prizewinner can keep the 'whatever it is' and any other foreign bits and pieces left behind after the engine is finished.
Julie - I'll follow your lead and not stick it anywhere near the engine either.

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Mystery bit
« on: February 25, 2020, 02:48:53 PM »
Hi all,
Cracking on with build of the 400 engine and sorting through the various boxes and bags it came in I found this little 'cap' of some kind.
No idea what it is - may well not be from the engine, just some detritus the previous owner threw in for good measure but I just wanted to make sure it's not some critical part that's dropped off somewhere in the engine.
Any ideas??
Cheers,
Andy
