Other Bikes / Re: Kawasaki Z400J1 Restoration
« on: May 01, 2021, 12:03:21 PM »
Dave,
That's looking fantastic - a really nice looking bike all round.
Agree with the carb fitting pain - I can never understand why they couldn't allow a little extra space to allow carbs to be pulled back out of the stubs etc. without a full-on wrestle every time.
All the bikes I've done have had this to varying degrees and I found the 400/4 the easiest so far but still not easy.
Looking forward to seeing the Z400 finished.
Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Re: Weeping brakes

Thanks again,
Brian - I hadn't come across a brake line spanner before so had a google and one on order now - hopefully that'll allow proper tightening of the fixings.

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks everyone,
Interesting range of views and I guess no 100% simple answer.

I haven't had any brakes in the past with the screw-in flared type connector, always had banjo bolts and washers so I wasn't sure if there was something I missed at assembly.

The bleed nipple weep seems to have stopped with a tiny extra tweak tighter - I'm just nervous of overtightening and thought I'd seen various mentions of PTFE tape on these on the forum.

Weep from the main hose is still there and I don't want to risk tightening further so I think I'll drain the brake and take the hose off - give it a good clean along with the caliper inlet and see if that cures it.

Thanks again,
Andy

CB350/400 / Weeping brakes

Finally getting back to doing some work on the bikes after a seemingly endless series of diversions.
On the recently fitted (new pattern) brake caliper I've got a slow weep from both the bleed nipple and the screw connector into the caliper for the brake line.
Don't want to tighten any further so guess I'll drain, remove and refit so I wondered if there is something people recommend for these threads to help seal the joints?

Andy

Project Board / Re: Source of quality gasket kits
« on: February 17, 2021, 06:36:42 PM »
Dave,
I think it was the same in the set I received - paper gaskets marked NE but head gasket plain.
When I googled at the time that seemed to be the same on the NE branded sets I could find pictures of.
I have to admit for the CJ I wasn't too concerned - probably hasn't got the power to scare even a cheap Chinese gasket!
On the CB1100F and GS1000S I remember it was very strongly recommended to only us the OEM gaskets as nobody seemed to have found a good aftermarket alternative.
Glad you've found the right gaskets for the Z and hopefully assembly will go smoothly.

Cheers,
Andy

Ted,
I had problems on the CB400 and also the CJ250T with two different brands of tapered bearings.
The issue seems to be that the upper bearing is simply thicker than the original so reduces available thread on the stem.
Bottom bearing with spacer worked out correctly but top bearing on both caused the problem.
Will be keen to see if the ones you have will work better as it seems crazy that the bearings aren't simply interchangeable without issue.
No other bikes I've worked on have had an issue so guess it's just on some models that things don't fit nicely.
Cheers,
Andy

Ted,
I had exactly the same problem on the CJ250T and ended up cutting the tube both ends to avoid damaging the brackets.
The replacement pivot I got is solid rather than hollow and fits fine so at least there is a solution for the problem.
Good luck

Cheers,
Andy
PS I did try many approaches to loosening the bolt first as well as copious swearing but it wasn't giving in until the hacksaw came out!

Dave,
I had a similar experience buying NE brand gaskets a while ago from Brooks Barn.
Picture showed NE branded packaging but when the gaskets arrived they were in Hi Level packaging.
The gaskets themselves were marked NE brand however and BB assured me that they were the original NE items, just in outer packaging in Hi Level branding.
They seemed to all fit OK so I'm hoping they are OK and also feel it's misleading to show a totally different image to the supplied parts.
Hope you find the ones you need OK - never worked on a Kwak so can't suggest any sources.
Cheers,
Andy

Misc / Open / Re: Gate Posts

Skoti,
No worries - still at the long hard thinking stage with the gates.
I've been carefully digging a test hole to locate drain and power which I know are in the area - found both and of course they're exactly where I wanted to put the post!
More thinking to be done but at least now I know for certain where the services are. When we had the garage built I spoke with the various service companies to try and check where things run from the road but they have no record at all so I wanted to make sure.
Hopefully will firm up post position and get cracking with the next step.

Cheers,
Andy

Dave,
Good news - the scanner and PC fired up despite the cold garage and I managed to scan the full fiche in reasonably quickly.
The file is just about 10mb total - can email across if you let me know address etc.
Quality varies hugely on the scans of these old fiches but if any important bits aren't legible on any pages let me know and I can check if it's clearer on one of the other fiches.

Andy

Dave,
No problem.
Do you know which fiche is the best for your bike - from the 3 pictured it shows 1980 as J1 and 1981 as J2?

Dave,
Looks a great base for restoration - will be good to see how it truns out.

I've had vapour blasting done a few times and I think the key is if there are any inaccessible dead ends, how clean the parts are before blasting (avoiding grit traps) and very careful cleaning afterwards. Most recently used a guy in Slough and they seem to do a really good job and parts come back really clean. I did try on one engine to bung up all the possible grit traps with silicon bungs and this worked to a large extent with only a few being dislodged during blasting. I then spent hours cleaning, flushing and blasting air through everything possible. There's always a small lingering doubt that some grit remained but fingers crossed and the results are aesthetically really pleasing.

Had a look in my fiche collection and I've got a few for the Z400J and happy to scan one assuming the scanner and PC still work (always mention that as the kit is quite old and sat in a cold garage!).
I've got 3 fiches as photo - [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
It takes a while to scan and save the fiches but if you have an urgent area you need first I can always scan a couple of pages quickly and follow with the full fiche if that keeps things moving for you.

Andy

Thanks for the tip Bryan - I've put some tape inside the cover just in case.
Lobo - love the brochures, great to see the old stuff we used to eagerly look at.
Roy -hoping to get a chance to fire her up tomorrow if it stays dry and I can get work out of the way early enough. No doubt there will be a few challenges but fingers crossed.

Andy

Thanks all,
It's been fun.
I was resigned to making do with 'treasonable' exhaust bits but then had a real stroke of luck over Christmas when a full NOS exhaust system turned up at a great price to really finish it off.
Spent a fair bit on paint, seat and chrome etc. but the overall cost wasn't bad as I got the bike and lots of NOS bits really cheap over the years before everything vaguely old got crazily over-priced.
Just got to get her outside and running and no doubt there'll be a few hiccups before she's really finished.
Cheers,
Andy
