SOHC Singles & Twins / Early 70’s CB250
« on: November 02, 2018, 10:07:10 AM »
It would appear that laying around in Rehab hospital isn’t good for my wallet....
An ad came up on Facebook Marketplace for this bike and I thought I will go back to that later on and message the seller...
Went down to Physio and after being tortured for an hour or so came back to my room and started looking for the ad again....could not find it.
I eventually gave up and even told my better half it was lucky I couldn’t find it as I would have bought it...
Guess what jumped up into my feed again later on in the afternoon....😊
After talking with the seller on the phone I transferred some $$ and the bike is now mine... I just have to wait till I am able to drive 600km to pick it up.
My wife wasn’t even upset over it...too bad if she had been as I had already paid for it by the time she got here to see me...
While pictures don’t show the full story it is all there...and at A$250 I think I got myself a bargain. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Next Spring is a long way off down here in Australia...we are heading into a hot summer.
Just arrived at the Rehab hospital... maybe here for around a week or 2 as long as the swelling goes down.

Thanks everyone...unfortunately Nurse Julie the little button was only for the fist day so I am back on “ normal” strong painkillers now.
The rehab is painful but it has to get better 😳

I had a total left knee replacement yesterday and spent a reasonably comfortable night with the aid a little push button 😉 Pain meds are good.
Rehab starts today so that will be interesting lol..
I am looking forward to getting back to not needing crutches etc to get around so I can get back to working on my bikes.

CB750 / Re: CB750 Head Gasket copper or not ?
« on: September 18, 2018, 11:31:44 PM »
It used to be fairly common practice to go Copper and "O Ring" the head on very high compression engines as well as Turbo and Supercharged motors for competition.. not sure it is overly practical for daily running....

Project Board / Re: Down Under 1975 CB400F Restoration Project

Surprisingly it ran fine.. started easy once I used the old screwdriver on the starter solenoid.. I think there is an issue with the starter switch.. but that will be looked at in due course :)

Hmm looks like I will need to keep updating this a little more often..
OK, so what has been done since I last posted.. not a lot but..
I did manage to secure a complete engine with carby stack for A$400 and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived.
All the fins and covers look to be in better condition than the original engine (still in the bike) and after having a look down the bores with my $18 borescope (not as hi-res as they say) there doesnt look to be a great deal to worry about.
It had reasonable compression when turned over on the kick starter and I can really only see one cylinder with what looks to be a vertical groove in the bore.. time will tell if it was a good buy or not but spare parts cannot go astray.

I also got a good deal on a Big Bore kit.. I just couldnt resist.. Under A$300 and it arrived today and the piston I have a look at was quite good.. no sharp edges or casting flash.. all packaged well so we will see when it comes time to bore the barrels. I at least have a spare set that I can take back to more standard size if this lot doesnt work out..

CB350/400 / Re: Weight of CB400 Engine
« on: July 17, 2018, 12:05:39 AM »
Perfect, thanks for that.. I had guessed at 68kg so I was pretty close. Freight booked so all I need to do now is wait till it all gets here :)
Then I can make the brackets to put it up on my engine stand.

CB350/400 / Weight of CB400 Engine
« on: July 15, 2018, 09:28:04 AM »
I have managed to score a complete CB400F engine with Carbies but as they are in Geelong (approx 800km away) I need to get them freighted to me.
The person I have bought them from isnt able to weigh the engine but I need a weight for the transport company..
Can anyone give me a pretty close weight of the 400 engine? I can add in for a crate etc.

Thanks in advance  :)

Misc / Open / Re: For all the interested plane enthusiasts
« on: July 14, 2018, 02:41:40 AM »
I have just watched the youtube video of the BBC's footage... all 14 minutes of it and it was a wonderful sight to see such iconic Aircraft and then the formation of the Typhoons was perfect... and to top it all off with the Red Arrows.. Wish I could have been there to see it live..
We dont seem to be able to flypasts as well here in Australia.. No point doing it in Canberra, that place is only full of Politicians  or Public Servants and all they would do is complain about the cost.
We dont even do Airshows much these days.... I did my Apprenticeship in the 70's with Hawker de Havilland so there was plenty of Military Aircraft around to get your teeth into.. I spent 2 years of that time in the Hydraulic shop which was amazing experience. No super Electronic servo assisted stuff then, just very precise hydraulics run under high pressure..
Anyway.. link to the footage below for anyone interested :)

Out & About / Re: OUT AND ABOUT 2018
« on: June 24, 2018, 12:21:17 AM »
We are going to have to do this on our next trip to the UK... last time we did the Norton Factory tour and watched some BSB practice at Donington but that was before I joined this wonderful forum or had the joy of owning a SOHC (400/4).
The better half has family at Bradford and we always get a car so we will just need to plan the trip around some good shows and try to get to some bike meets as well.. note to self... Must start planning.

CB750 / Re: DIY ultrasonic carb cleaning results
« on: June 20, 2018, 08:41:26 AM »
I soak all my carby stuff in Threebond before putting them into my Ultrasonic with a mix of an Orange (Citrus) type concentrated cleaner, a little dishwashing detergent, water and Vinegar.

This is an Aussie link but it is the same stuff Subaru use to spray into the intake to clean their intake tract and inlet valves.. you would be amazed at how it brings up manky carby parts green from ethanol fuels etc.

CB750 / Re: Exporting my bikes
« on: June 08, 2018, 02:54:00 PM »
While the gaskets are certainly potential for asbestos the main culprit seems to be brakes and brake linings.. I have heard of people removing the pads and brake shoes and that mostly seems to satisfy the authorities..
This guy ( https://northcoastmoto.com.au/ ) inspects, reports and imports vehicles and bikes from the USA and he may well have more specific details to assist you.. then again he may not want to part with said information without the passing of Sth Pacific Peso's across his palm..
I only know of him because he has or had a CB400F that was imported (engine in bits... I wonder why) that was for sale..
I am not sure on the pre/post 1990 thing either. I do know that I enquired on importing an SRX250 3WP (1991) frame complete from Japan through a specialist JDM importer) and was advised that to register it I would need an import certificate.. and they cant get one for it as it was a 1991 model. There are earlier frames but they are a little different to the 3WP model..

Anyway.. maybe drop him a line and see if he is able to cast more light on it all for you.
Good luck with it..

From the Aussie side you may wish to check out getting them all checked and certified that there is no Asbestos in any gaskets or brake items.. They are clamping down hard on that here.. and unfortunately it is your responsibility to comply.. if you cant prove it then they can impound and it will cost a small fortune to have them independently checked here..
You may want to check with your importer about having an Import License as well.. I think pre 1990 isnt much of an issue but post 1990 could be.
