CB350/400 / Re: CB400F Parts Wanted
« on: November 09, 2020, 07:55:17 PM »
Bugger..... I would have grabbed it if I had known... still I am at least not in trouble with SWAMBO because I bought "another" bike in bits :)
My exhaust was crushed on the outer pipe and had multiple large holes... so it was too far gone to even attempt to restore.
I have contemplated the Pattern pipes but havent made a decision yet... still away off starting the 400.. I have a modified Yamaha SRX250 (really a 350 now) that is almost finished and an SL125 in the mid stage... maybe over Christmas I will get them completed and start on the 400...

Damn that is cheap... A$900 to A41000......... over here on the East Coast 400/4's are probably double that and more, let alone with a spare engine... I am still slowly gathering bits for mine while I finish other projects... now if I could just find a half decent 400F exhaust (pipes only) I would have most of what I need.

Plenty of people using Cerakote on engines etc here in Australia... there are some spectacular colours on some 2 stoke stuff  I have seen...
Basic qualities are chemical resistance (fuel and oil) scratch resistance etc...
there are some good pics from this site on FB and no doubt plenty of good ones in the UK too.

That is why they make a 3/8" Impact tool (mine is a Ryobi) and its a nice match for my 1/2" drive 18v Impact wrench.
I believe both are a Pre-set max torque. 150 Ft lbs for the 3/8" and 300 Ft lbs for the 1/2". I never use them to "torque" up bolts but will spin them up close and then final check with a torque wrench.

The 3/" one with a set of JIS bits is the pefect tool for pulling apart old Japanese motorcycles :)

Other Bikes / Re: Z1 as a project?
« on: July 30, 2020, 11:10:33 PM »

It’s too much of a stretch to do a build thread here, it not only has two cams but also the K word on the tank. If you can bear to visit the dark side, I’m doing a build thread on the Z1 Owners forum which I have joined. It’s surprising how many names on there I know from here!

Hmm .. went on there and spotted a literature area but it's asking me to log in to access it  :( You can go on our Alladins cave stuff on here and download it without registering. Are we the mugs or what? I am paying a tenner a month to Dropbox to support the literature I have linked on here (which I do glady BTW to help others and encourage people to come and join us on here) and  I would hate it if Steve didn't make this freely availabe to everyone who wants to access it.

This is what I got:

Sorry. You cannot read topics within this part of the forum.

Certain areas of the site are only available to registered users and some to paid up Z1OC Members.

Ash, I certainly have no issue with the information gathered being restricted... I am in another forum here in Aus that requires you to be a "Premium" member (for a minimal cost of $15 for 2 years) to access the Resources section... given that this goes towards keeping the forum Advertisement free and it is far cheaper than buying manuals etc (if you can get them).

Misc / Open / Re: Paint confusion
« on: July 29, 2020, 11:21:02 PM »
You can get some pretty good masks these days with replaceable filters... more a respirator than a mask.
Also check around and see if any of the local Panel Shops hire out their Spray booths...Then you have a controlled environment (especially if it is a downdraught booth) and potentially an oven to cure the clear quicker.
Unfortunately all the 2 Pak clear (gun or aerosol) will be Iso Cyanate... however you can do it safely if you are careful.

You will most likely find that all manufacturers these days use Water based paints due to having to meet environmental regulations etc. They would all use a specific paint system from the likes of PPG etc that would have an appropriate fuel safe clear coat, probably not something you could re-finish in your Garage in a few years time. Pretty much like the rest of the way new bikes are now... all electronics and fancy arsed plastics, led's etc.
Good luck restoring one of todays new bikes in 40 or 50 years.

My Unit arrived late last week... so about 10 days to Australia which given it can take double that to get something from Melbourne to Sydney is pretty good.
We packaged and as stated with extra bullet connectors and detailed instructions.

Airfreight costs have skyrocketed due to the lack of planes in the air.
Our work Airfreight costs have risen by approx 500% since Covid really kicked in with flights cancelled etc;
Freight cost should go back down but maybe not to the previous levels.
I am contemplating adding in the Blade fuse holder.. just for the reliability factor... hmmm I should get onto that if I am going to do it....lol

CB350/400 / Re: cutting back lacquer finish?
« on: June 06, 2020, 12:09:05 AM »
If the finish is good I would leave it.. Mostly people will "colour sand" and buff which is to flatten off the clear using very fine wet and dry paper (with plenty of slightly soapy water).
This takes out most orange-peel and any bugs that might have landed in the drying clear coat.
You can then buff it up using cutting compound and then finish polishing...
It really all depends on how many coats of clear you applied as well.. if only 1 or 2 then you run the risk of rubbing through the clear and having to start all over again.
Not an exciting prospect...
I agree with waiting a while to do anything though... single pak clear takes quite a while to fully harden.. on the surface it may feel hard but it will still be gassing out from underneath as it relies on the solvents to "gas out" for it to fully harden.
Throw some pics up.. sounds like a nice paint job.
