As for felt,  I washed "her indoors" favourite merino wool jumper either too hot or dryer too fast  :-[  that's now only suitable for  felt washers. Was I in the dog house for that one. ;D

That's ironic, did exactly that this weekend thinking I was helping my poorly wife. Now where are those carbs.... ::)

think they came with aload of engineering stuff i bought..they are a few years old but they are fab!

Hiya, I know this is an old thread but would anybody that has the right punches be able to make me a set for my CB400F?
I’m having zero luck on the internet trying to find anything remotely similar!🙄

Great tip. What thickness grade A felt please, or does it come in one thickness only?

I tried to make my own but had trouble getting the correct felt. The stuff they sell in Hobbycraft doesn't have enough density and falls apart.
I bought a set from Mike Nixon in the US, here's his link:

Nice one Dave, spot on. I wasnt sure if anybody who'd bought the punches to make some might have been able to fettle me set up over the weekend or something. That links the closest I've got so I'll get some ordered up cheers for that you're a gent

Hi everyone.. I’m currently rebuilding my carburettor’s and have encountered the felt washers issue.
During research for felt washers I came across this old thread, unfortunately I don’t have anything to hand to use as a felt washer.
Would anybody be able to recommend where I could order some grade ‘A’ felt as mentioned in this opening topic along with the required thickness of felt.
Many thanks

I have the tools and the felt to make these Roo and CB-500. Do you still need some?

I must warn you, they are quite fragile so I tend to soak mine in Silicon oil as that not only helps them keep together but also aids in lubricating the lifter shaft that passes through them.

Start a production line as I’d be grateful for a set….or even two sets.😀

I've built two sets now without them, i was assured it wasnt a vital nessessity. They were so dear and I couldnt find the stuff to make it from. After I'd bought the punches and the felt and the postage, it wasnt worth the outlay for a handful of washers when I didnt definitely need them.

Get cracking Ken, you must have a bit of spare time to rustle up a quick 20 sets? ;D ;D

20 sets ?????? You know where you can go with that request. TBH they ain't hard to make, just fiddly. I'll make a few sets as soon as I get the time.
Title: Re: HOW TO MAKE FELT CARB WASHERS
Post by: Oddjob on September 04, 2022, 07:45:31 PM
Just made 3 sets, I use metric hole punches and I find 12mm and 8mm good for this purpose. Unlike the link I find making the small hole first then punching the larger one around it. I tried it the other way and I was forever throwing them away due to one side being so thin it was starting to break up.

Will send you 2 sets Phil. One set for CB-500 as soon as he sends me his address.

I have decided that I might as well buy a new punch set, the new one does both cuts at the same time so hopefully the quality will be much better. Also ordered some new felt, 100% wool felt. If the new ones turn out better than my other ones I may make a few sets and sell them. Might even be able to make the ones for the 500 swinging arm.

I'll update when I have all the tools and materials.

I'll pre order a set for the 400 when the production facility becomes fully operational please Ken 👍.
Title: Re: HOW TO MAKE FELT CARB WASHERS
Post by: Oddjob on September 05, 2022, 03:17:20 PM
We'll see how they come out first Dave. Hopefully they'll be really good, at £90 for the punch I'd hope so.

I'll sell a few sets and recoup the outlay.

What's odd about the link that started this is it suggests 1/4" and 3/8". 1/4" is approx 6mm and 3/8" is approx 9.5mm. Which is odd as the shaft of the lifter arm is 10mm and the hole in the carb body is around 12-13mm. So the felt must have to stretch like hell to fit and most likely it would rip. Is the 400 felt washer the same as the 500/550?

Actually just noticed the felt washers on the link are going onto the choke not the lifter arm as in the 500/550.

Send me measurements of the 400 choke arm please Dave and the carb body recess. Do they not have the felt washers on the lifter arm as well Dave? Been many moons since I refurbed a 400 set of carbs.

I would need to take the carbs apart to measure them Ken. I have a spare felt in the set I got from Mike Nixon previously. I'll measure these and let you know. There are two sizes, one for the lifter arm and a bigger one for the choke butterfly shaft.

OK Dave panic over as Bryan has a set apart. The lifter ones look the same as the 500/550. I presume there are 4 in each set?

Yep, four per set.
Title: Re: HOW TO MAKE FELT CARB WASHERS
Post by: Oddjob on September 06, 2022, 01:24:18 PM
Cancelled the order for the punch set as I discovered it didn't do big enough punches to make the swinging arm felt washers for the 500. Ordered the bigger set (£160) which will allow me to make them.

Anyone got a felt washer off a 500 lying around, I seem to recall it was thin but how thin. The O/D bore is 26mm but what's the inside bore? which thinking about it will be the O/D of the bush, anyone got a genuine 500 bush? I threw mine away when I cut them out of the swinging arm.

Id of the felt is  not the od of the bush ken but od of the steel collar od of the felt is od of the bush, got brass bushes and collar upstairs

Brass bush approx sizes 21 id 25 od but if using brass you dont use the felt, that is only on the original 500 and 750 i think, maybe 450.
All the later onrs use a phenolic top hat type i think
Title: Re: HOW TO MAKE FELT CARB WASHERS
Post by: Oddjob on September 06, 2022, 06:09:45 PM
I seem to recall the felt washer goes between the bush and the tube of the swinging arm Bryan, it then gets covered by that little top hat type plastic washer, presume it's there just to stop water entering.

Yeah, only the 500 uses it and only when using OE type bushes. Maybe some other bikes use something similar though.

I currently have my 500 swingarm in bits for the fitting of bronze bushes, I have all the old components apart from the felt washers!! Can’t find them anywhere!

However here’s the measurements of what I do have:

Swingarm bush (no.10 parts fiche) OD-26.5mm ID-21mm

Pivot thrust bush (no.11 parts fiche) of which the felt washers fit against - hopefully the photo makes sense, sorry the editing was done quickly

Cheers, for that. I have a 26mm and a 20mm hole cutter in the new set. It's better for them to stretch to fit rather than be too big.

According to CMS the felt washers are used on the CB350F, CB450, CL450, CB500, CB550K and CB750. If I make some I'll bung a few sets on Ebay.

First attempt.

One problem, whilst I can do a 26 x 20 felt washer quite easily and a 12 x 8 easily I have found I cannot do the small ones for the choke as the cutters for the 10 x 6 that they require both use the same mounting position so I cannot cut them both at the same time, unlike the others. Plus after checking a 500 carb body it would appear that the 500 is the same size as the 400, the problem is 9mm is too small and 9.5mm is fractionally too big. The shaft is 6.8mm. There are no 9mm cutters in the set.

Looks like I'm going to need to get creative.

A swinging arm washer and 2 lifter washers. I didn't hammer hard enough for the swinging arm one, hence why it's a little fuzzy on the inside edge. They do seem a lot more robust than the previous ones I made by hand.

12 x 8 for the lifter spindle, the choke ones are very hard to make, I seem to recall 10 x 6.9,  Bryan tested the ones I made and said the attrition rate was around 50%, that may be because he was the first to test them and maybe they'd be better once you knew exactly how to fit them. I'll have a try on a set of 500 carbs and see how I do.

I think if the felts were soalked in oil for some time they may hold together better, the originals seem to be a denser felt

Thanks, I'll experiment with some felt I have (use for machine bedway wipers) which is quite thick but will assist in it holding together. I can then razor them down...

I'm in the market for some felt washers for my carb rebuild.

Mine are all pretty perished. I need a full set for both the chokes and the main lifters.

Would anybody want to supply me or know where to get them ?

Thanks

Ken (formally Oddjob on here) made a few sets. I purchased a set and they are very good quality. He was going to put a few sets on ebay so that would be your first port of call. Failing that Mike Nixon in the US can supply them but they are expensive. His website is here:
