I'll move my needle to middle (third) position then and see what the result...ATM it's running so rich it won't rev cleanly....cheers 🥂 with a bit of faffing I'll get there

The last of all the Honda fours Graham has restored over the past few years, went to its new owner yesterday, the UK model 500K0. Keep an eye around the Bristol area, you may see it about.
That leaves us with 6 riding bikes between us, our own bikes, which we intend keeping.
It feels quite empty here now, not enough  bikes to trip over or navigate around in the garage / workshop / house.

[...] Julie the needle is on groove four from the top, I understand that's where the US bikes were, is that right? [...]
For a full understanding and why some of us hold 4th position of te needleclip for questionable, you may want to consult this overview and read the subnotes in particular.
For an experiment I have my needleclips in 4th. So far I regret it. In all other markets that also had the 627B carbs, 3rd position was standard... Same goes for the markets that had the 649A carbs.

Quite right too, Mick dogs are part of the family 👍
I'm waiting for my carb kits now, I've got a starting point by balancing the carbs and it will tick over smooth at 1100 rpm but to get it to rev cleanly and idle the mixture screws need to be almost out. I'm pretty sure it's the float level masked by the worn needle springs and possibly also the slow jet which might have been cleaned with a wire...both hopefully sorted with the carb kits

Apparently the downside is the rear light needs rechroming. What? That's embarrassingly bad.

I've contacted the tool provider who supply the same tool to DS. It appears that the supplier for the retainers were the issue. I've been offered some turned down pins as an option for my tool. I will contact DS and see if they can supply a better part. The rear tool is a different design to the front one.

I heated the end of the swingarm and just knocked out the bush with a long steel rod. Came out pretty easy, no cutting.

On my original 400/4 I zip tied the box on the top frame tube and just clear of the carb bank as there was just enough room for it to sit between the fuel tank tunnel and the frame tube. I thought I'd had a result until one day when giving the bike a handful it topped out at 110mph🙄, (actually it was about 70!). The CDI box had slowly worked it's way back down the frame just enough to interfere with the top of the carbs at full throttle.
I'm 90% sure the Boyer does use a wasted spark Ash👍
