CB500/550 / Spare coils cb550?
« on: June 15, 2016, 02:09:25 PM »
Hi all,

My Dyna coils have fried and will be going through the warranty process to get new ones.  Anyone have a spare set of coils they could lend/sell me for cheap to keep me going in the interim?

CB500/550 / Bike won't start - help!
« on: May 29, 2016, 05:36:30 PM »
Well gents, after a blissful week of riding, my bike no longer starts, and I can't figure out why for the life of me.
It became harder to start over the course of a few days, but now refuses to catch at all.

I have done the following:
-checked valve clearances
-checked static timing
-cleaned and gapped the points
-replaced condensers and spark plugs - spark seems ok
-checked function of coils - all values fall within normal ranges
-replaced battery
-checked frame grounding points for corrosion, found none.
-sprayed easy start directly into the intakes, no go.

What could it be?  I'm all out of ideas.

CB500/550 / Wiring help - electrex reg/rec
« on: May 07, 2016, 09:21:08 PM »
Can anyone tell me which wires go where wiring in an electrex RR24 reg/rec unit into a '77 550F2?   I thought I had it right, but not charging.

I've currently got white green and 3 yellows from the generator running to the same colours on the reg/rec, and the red from the reg/rec going to battery positive and the black from reg/rec to switched power.

Should the green also be grounded back to battery negative?

Help!

CB500/550 / Low oil pressure at high temps?
« on: May 06, 2016, 06:13:21 AM »
Hi all,

I've finally passed my mod 2 and have been taking my bike (1977 CB550F2) to work and back for the last 2 days.  Mornings all is fine, but in afternoon traffic the oil pressure light comes on as the bike starts to get hot.  It has sufficient oil, and I popped the tappet inspection caps and all seems oily up top, so not sure what's going on.  Any suggestions?

CB500/550 / Brake issues
« on: March 05, 2016, 08:04:23 AM »
Hello all, it been awhile since I posted a cry for help but this one has me stumped.  when I turn the wheel from lock to lock, the brakes seem to drag on the disc at the extremes of left and right turn.  This isn't a problem during normal riding obviously, just makes it harder to push the bike around when I park up as there is some pressure on the disc, but it still has me a bit worried if I've done something wrong.  It is a dual disc conversion, and the lines have been replaced with braided hoses.  I've read that removing the metal line can cause problems as the hoses can flex and put tension on the caliper, but I'm not convinced that this is the issue.

Any ideas?

CB500/550 / Project update
« on: January 30, 2016, 07:32:10 PM »

Nearly there.  Still need to sort out the front brakes, run a clutch cable and tidy a few wires, bit very close to completion!

Tank is coming back from paint next week, and it should all be sorted by then.

CB500/550 / Motogadget m-unit wiring diagram.
« on: December 29, 2015, 06:10:40 PM »
Hoping this might help someone who's doing a rewire using the motogadget m-unit. The bike is definitely not original, all the lights are led, gps speedo/tach combo gauge, new reg/rec, etc. but could still be useful.

CB500/550 / Bike security
« on: December 26, 2015, 01:46:06 PM »
Hi all, just wondering what you use for bike security, both in the garage and while out and about?  As things are coming together, time to start considering the options.

CB500/550 / Lower headstock bearing height
« on: December 07, 2015, 05:53:09 PM »
Hi all, I'm nearing the final reassembly of my project (1977 CB550F2) and am replacing the headstock bearings with a set of all balls roller bearings.  I need to know how tall the original bearings are to figure out which spacer washer to use, but threw out the old bearing ages ago.  Anybody have a measurement of the original bearing, or know which washer works best from the all balls kit?  Thanks!

CB500/550 / Update on the build
« on: November 02, 2015, 09:02:34 PM »
It's been awhile in coming, but things are moving at a pace now.  Here's a few pics of where I'm at.  I've had a custom exhaust built, battery box relocated under the swingarm - mounted to the frame, speedo mounts and some bits added in, headlight and indicator mounts made up, the list goes on.

CB500/550 / Clutch question
« on: September 13, 2015, 05:14:26 PM »
Installed the kickstart lever today and as I did, I pulled up in the clutch lever in the right case cover and noticed it doesn't seem to be working right.
When I pull upwards, it moves easily at first, then I can hear a knock when it hits the clutch pushrod, and then I can't move it any further.   What's going on here?

CB500/550 / Regulator rectifier recommendation needed
« on: September 06, 2015, 08:38:18 PM »
Hi all,

Is there a difference between the different brands of new combined reg/rec units?  Can someone give me a recommendation for a good one?

Thanks!

Hi all,

Where does this screw go and what does it do?  Been wondering for awhile.

CB500/550 / Replacement mc - help needed
« on: July 15, 2015, 09:48:10 AM »
Hi all,

I'm slowly progressing with my build, and realised that with my switch to clubman bars, the brake mc will be at an angle, which I've heard is not a good idea.  So, as I need a new mc anyway to suit the dual discs, I was thinking of going with a remote reservoir system.  I was originally just going to go with a gl1000 mc setup because I knew it'd suit the dual discs, but now with the choice available with remote reservoir systems I don't know what to go with.  From my reading, I've gleaned that the mc bore is not a great measure of the pressure it can put on the brakes, and that I should be looking at leverage ratios and all sorts.  So, thoroughly confused I've come for some help.  What would you recommend?  What size mc do I need to run dual discs, and does any of that other stuff really matter?  Anyone recommend a good remote reservoir system?
