CB500/550 / Lost a float needle valve seat
« on: September 25, 2014, 07:50:01 PM »
Anyone know where I can find one of these for 069A carbs from a 1977 cb550f2?
Found one on ebay for £12 shipped from the US, but if I can avoid ordering from overseas....

CB500/550 / Can I try to start it yet?
« on: September 24, 2014, 10:23:18 PM »
1977 cb550, been sitting for 13 years.  Got the tank lined, carbs cleaned, and have the parts for an oil change, filter change (air and oil) and new plugs.
After all the recent advice, I've decided I do need to do a teardown of the engine before running the bike regularly.  Before beginning this, should I try giving it an initial start, or skip go and just pull it apart?

CB500/550 / How many rattle cans?
« on: September 23, 2014, 01:44:52 PM »
Here I sit at my lunch break pondering how many rattle cans of VHT paint it would take to do my engine... then I decided to stop wondering and ask to experts. 😊

Also, do you guys use the VHT clear afterwards?

CB500/550 / Oil recommendation 1977 cb550F2?
« on: September 22, 2014, 07:36:39 PM »
Hoping to give it its first kickover this weekend, read a lot of debate over mineral vs semi synthetic vs full synthetic, detergents added, no detergents, different viscosities... everybody and their dog seems to have different experiences.  Since I have no idea what the PO was using, anyone care to make a recommendation?

CB500/550 / Re-chroming fork tubes.
« on: September 17, 2014, 05:38:13 PM »
Can anyone recommend where to get this done?  I've found loads of places online, but if anyone has had good service, particularly around Slough, I'd love to hear about it.

CB500/550 / Air filter and battery
« on: September 15, 2014, 08:27:29 AM »
Hi all, more advice needed.  I'm looking to keep a fairly stock setup for now and was wondering what you recommend for air filter elements and battery?  I've seen the stuff from DSS and CMSNL, but wondering what the real world says.  What are you guys running and where can I get it?

Thanks!

CB500/550 / Corrosion on brake cylinders

I need an opinion - there is some pitting on the cylinders for my fron calipers, would you guys replace these?

CB500/550 / It has arrived!
« on: August 28, 2014, 12:17:25 PM »
Finally picked up my 1977 Cb550 super sport.

The good - minimal surface rust on the frame and swingarm, engine looks in good shape, already has a dual disc conversion, and it came with loads of spare parts (extra set of carbs, braided steel brake lines, original spoked wheels, deeptone exhaust, and the bottom end of the original engine).

The bad - fork tubes are pitted, probably need replacing.  Wiring has been "altered" and it looks like a rats nest.  Front brakes are seized.  Bit worried that the engine has been replaced by PO, but hopefully all is right.  The added front disk setup looks like it needs some proper bolts to make right.  Headers need replacing - far too rusted to work with.

What do you all think?  Did I do alright for £440?

CB500/550 / Finishing an engine
« on: August 25, 2014, 11:18:28 AM »
Hi guys, another newbie question.  I've been looking around on the net about how to get the externals of the engine back looking their finest, and I've come away confused.  There is vapour blasting, ceramic blasting, polishing, painting,  powder coating... so what's the deal?
I just want to have the engine back in a condition where the corrosion and staining of the last 40 years are gone, and the engine is protected for the next 40 - I don't need it blacked out, or any crazy finishes.

How does one go about achieving this?  If you could give me some options with the pros and cons, it'd really help a confused new bike owner.

CB500/550 / Repair and upgrade recommendations 1977 cb550f1
« on: August 11, 2014, 03:47:14 AM »
Hi all,
I mentioned in my last post that I've just bought a 1977 cb550 F1.  It's in rough shape, so not a restoration project,  but some repairs and modifications are in store to make it my style.  I'm trying to come up with a to do list for this build.

It's my first bike and I'm hoping to make it my daily rider, so it needs to be reliable.  I'm going to take the engine in to a pro and get it sorted out, as I don't have the knowledge to do it myself and I don't want to screw it up.    However, I think I'll be able to tackle the rest of the maintenance and repairs myself.

So, now to my question - I want to do this right, and make the bike as good as it can be (within financial reason), so what type of non-engine maintenance or improvements would you make to ensure the bike will run smoothly for years to come?

I'm thinking of doing the wheel and steering bearings with all balls roller bearings, rebuild the front suspension using progressive springs, replace the fuse panel with one that accepts blade fuses, adding an electronic ignition system, replacing the swingarm bushings, redoing the wiring and battery (to accommodate new lights, gauges,  etc), run clip on bars, add a second front disc...  that's all I can think of at the moment.

I need your help.  Which parts/manufacturers would you recommend?  What have I missed?  Is there anything I shouldn't do?

All advice and opinions greatly appreciated.

CB500/550 / Greetings from a new 550 owner
« on: July 31, 2014, 02:33:09 PM »
Hi ladies and gents, I've been lurking on this forum and soaking up advice for awhile, but since I just bought a 550 last night I thought I'd introduce myself.  I'm totally new to the bike scene - never owned a bike before and didn't like any of the new stuff coming out. I'm also a project kind of guy, so I bought my bike with the intent to fix and customise into a brat/cafe style.  As my wife said, I can't ever do anything the easy way.

First things first - I'm going to pick up the bike in a fews weeks time (out of the country currently), so any suggestions on what to tackle first on a bike that has spark, turns over, but doesn't start? Clean and flush fuel system? Carbs?

Thanks in advance for all the help I'm sure to get over the next while!
