CB500/550 / Probably finished?
« on: April 29, 2020, 04:45:22 PM »
After spending far too much on it according to the wife, the bike is just about where I want it. That is, I could ride it if it wasn't for the virus. For the sake of my marriage I've decided to compromise on keeping it absolutely stock as there will always be something wrong; like the chrome edging around the tank doing nothing useful and costing more than it's worth. Mine has gone brittle and a bit has broken off so if I can work out something else to replace that with I will. I don't want to get the tank resprayed 'cos I like the strange shades of colours showing through and it would also mean getting the side panels done as well. :)

Misc / Open / Plug leads
« on: April 22, 2020, 11:45:09 PM »
The coils appear to be working OK so I'm reluctant to change them but the plugs leads are going on 50 years old and likely to be past their best. As they are part of the coil body would it be possible to splice new HT leads to the old leads perhaps using an in line connector of some sort? Just a thought! ::)

Tricks & Tips / Setting valve clearances
« on: April 21, 2020, 08:17:01 PM »
Does anyone remember a technique for setting the valve clearances by using the adjusters like a vernier gauge; that is, so many turns equals so many thou? I used to have that set up on my old Thruxton Bonne but I think I got those adjuster from the US and they had socket heads not slots.

Just a thought as I can't find my old ground down feeler gauges that fitted nicely in the rather small Honda access holes.

Tricks & Tips / Side panel badge fixing
« on: April 21, 2020, 09:56:27 AM »
Being a cheapskate I've used these. Pushed a hot wire through the middle then followed up with a 3.2mm drill bit. The adhesive sticks to the inside of the side panel and friction holds onto the badge pins.

CB500/550 / If only I could go for a ride!
« on: April 20, 2020, 01:06:13 PM »
After the expenditure of many, many beers mats I think it's nearly finished, but I can't tell 'cos I can't go out on it yet! :-\

CB500/550 / Recommended resprayers
« on: April 14, 2020, 08:06:46 AM »
Thinking about replacing the damaged  side panels of my 72 500 four. Can anyone recommend a company for the respray? Local to West Sussex would be nice but not essential. Ta :D

Or, if anyone has a good set in jade green that would be handy.

CB500/550 / Fitting pattern parts
« on: April 03, 2020, 04:09:56 PM »
Been out in the garage starting to fit the set of pipes from CMS. Had to grind down the exhaust flange on one to get the clamp onto the pipe but generally happy with the finish. Usual problems with fitting new kit to an old bike; the rear mounting brackets want to push the pipes into positions they don't want to go. Perhaps they're not the original brackets or it could be the frame? Anyway, I've ordered new ones from CMS although it would probably would be better to get new bespoke mounts made up. The trouble with that idea is where do you find a good fabricator who doesn't see an opportunity for early retirement!  :-[

CB500/550 / First run of the year
« on: March 22, 2020, 03:42:54 PM »
Finished all the jobs the wife had lined up and was allowed out to play. First time I've been out on the bike for quite some time and it looks like all the tinkering has paid off. Nice and smooth, good tickover and no oil leaks but I do need to remember the bike is only 30 years younger than me it hates being rushed too! :D

CB500/550 / Refitting carbs But airbox bits missing
« on: March 06, 2020, 05:46:06 PM »
I just refitted the carbs and found the best way fit the intake side to the carbs was to take out the air filter box and battery holder. That leaves a big hole and after much industrial terminolgy and plain brute force I squeezed that into place, (Don't try this if you value the frame paintwork!) but then I've found I'm missing a mounting bracket from the front of the air filter box. I can't find any on line and rather than resort to a couple of cable ties if anyone has one spare and would like to exchange it for some beer tokens please let me know. Ta.

CB500/550 / 500 four carbs
« on: February 22, 2020, 03:08:55 PM »
Between the 2 pairs of carbs where the spring is there are 2 vertical pipe fittings and I don't have anything connected to them. Should I have?

Cheers, Bob

CB500/550 / Refitting Cb500 four carbs
« on: February 03, 2020, 01:24:08 PM »
Hi

I've taken mine off to get them sorted but getting them off and out was quite a struggle. What methods do the learned members suggest as the best way to refit them?

Cheers, Bob

CB500/550 / 1972 500 four stock filter or other?
« on: January 20, 2020, 10:30:31 PM »
I've just spent an hour getting the carbs off because of a fuel leak and it needs fixing. Not quite as easy as I hoped because of the standard air filter box which may explain why so many bike seem to have an alternative option fitted. My question is, once I have sorted the leak would it be it worth using individual pod filters or velocity stacks? I realise the jetting would need to be altered but would that just be an styling exercise and more expense for nothing?  :-\ Cheers, Bob

CB500/550 / Delkevic exhaust system
« on: December 15, 2019, 11:22:26 PM »
A quick couple of questions for any of the learned members who have fitted this system.

1.Did you need to alter the carb settings?

2. Was it a good fit?

3. Did you find the noise level acceptable?

Thanks for your input.

Misc / Open / Restoration or renovation?
« on: December 15, 2019, 02:21:23 PM »
After allowing my original enthusiasm for restoring the bike to overcome my natural pragmatic attitude towards vehicles I have now settled on a less wallet damaging approach. The expensively restored headlight brackets have been consigned to a box under the bench as I found that I actually prefer the look of the much cheaper ones I fitted as temporary replacements. Having nothing else better to do I spent a very enjoyable hour yesterday with some offcuts and a crimping tool replacing the front and rear indicators with a set of smaller plastic ones from my spares box. Not only was it fun but to my eyes the result has taken years off the appearance of the bike. I am now studying the once to me iconic, but battered 4 into 4 exhaust setup and it’s possible future removal  for something  a bit lighter and less distressed. Could it be as a result of my financial mugging normal service has now been resumed? ::)
