CB500/550 / CB550 Bottom and top end rebuild
« on: October 19, 2020, 03:01:20 PM »
Hi all,

Been a long long time since I checked in. Actually a fairly long time since I've had any time to work on the the 550. Thought I'd give you all a quick run through of what I've been up to, it's taken me so long to get round to this as I've had a bunch of other projects taking up time, including some building work that ended up causing problems (and a lot of time and money to fix).

However in the odd 5 or 10 mins I've had spare I've gone through the following on the cb550 engine.

Stripped down the engine back to cases and inspected all the internals.

Cleaned and rebuilt the bottom end and top end including replacing all bearings seals o rings, chains pistons etc

Where I am up to now is installed the rocker cover (freshly assembled new arms and shafts) to the head using the elastic band trick to hold the arms off the valve stems (don't really want to bend anything at this point).

At this point I'm just waiting on some new bolts for the rocker cover and need to source a L hand stamped plate and some soft washers that sit underneath. Does anyone have a plate and/or set of washers (think they are aluminium) they'd be willing to sell?

I can turn the motor over using the kick starter and can feel the pressure building up so once the cover is installed I'll do a compression check and leak down just to make sure everything is nice and sealed.

Finally my two big concerns at the moment is the cam chain tensioner seems not to have much in the way of free play in it. I'm assuming this is because the chain is brand new and will give a bit over time but can anyone confirm how much tension should there be on a brand new chain? (I've gone through the chain tensioning procedure where you move the 1-4 TDC then 15 degrees on (or where the spring attaches) before adjusting but it seems there is very little or no slack.

And finally the oil pump has a chunk out of the casing on the external side of where the o ring sits. I'm hoping this will still give a good seal under pressure but I may need to replace the pump if not.

Adding a few pics if it'll let me.

CB500/550 / piston clearances CB550
« on: March 11, 2019, 11:33:53 AM »
Hi Guys,

Trying to find the piston to bore clearances for the following 0.5 oversized pistons.

https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB550F2-SUPER-SPORT-1977/part_326896/

Anyone happen to know the manufacturer of these? or better yet what the clearances should be?

CB500/550 / splitting cases advice
« on: February 17, 2019, 04:32:31 PM »
Hey guys,

Have been attempting to split cases for a while now as I want to inspect the internals as there was a fair amount of gunk in the sump and a lot of other worrying signs throughout the bike.

I'm having an issue and want to avoid rushing in and doing more damage to the cases. First I've managed to mostly break the seal between the two cases on the side of the oil filter but on the back side of the engine it seems to be completely solid. I've checked and re checked I've removed all the bolts and really want to avoid prying anywhere. I think it might be getting stuck on either the little dowel pin things (other places on the engine these have been really rusty) so soaking the thing with penetrating oil and using heat but nothing appears to be giving.

Any suggestions on what to do around this area to avoid damaging the mating surfaces?

Edit: forgot to mention this is a CB550F2

Thanks

Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / Sleeve press near reading
« on: January 07, 2019, 03:08:14 PM »
Hey Guys,

Been trying to search for a decent engineering / machine shop near reading that would be able to press out a damaged sleeve and fit a new sleeve from another cylinder but can't seem to find anywhere, been phoning round and either they don't want to know or they've stopped offering this service.

Any recommendations?

CB500/550 / Digging into the engine a little bit
« on: November 09, 2018, 02:30:28 PM »
Hey guys,

Got a little bit of time to get the engine out (finally) after much frustration with rusted engine bolts. Was really happy to have sorted that.

Now run into something a bit bigger of an issue.

When removing the cylinder head I noticed the bolt size wasn't right on one side under the side cover. It seems someone has drilled out the original bolt and replaced with a bigger size.

Next I notice that not only have they just drilled this out and cut a new thread they've left all the metal shavings in so there are bits of metal around the hole coming away and tiny bits in the oil.

Which appears to be wearing around the cam

As the hole drilled through the cylinder head also goes down into the cylinders is it worth looking for a replacement head. Also I have one of the heads with the additional 4 bolts at the top. If I can source a new head would any head from a 550 fit?

Also is it worth replacing the cam in this? (pics in next post)

Thanks

CB500/550 / Engine degrease and oxidation removal
« on: July 30, 2018, 07:47:51 PM »
Hey guys,

It has been a while, sorry for no updates on my project, however I've had quite a few big changes of late.

Deaths in the family, moved house (better garage) and the wife had a baby so lots of sleepless nights.

However finding the odd hour here of there where I can work on the bike so beginning to strip it down. It's pretty corroded and looks like someone has had a poor attempt at breaking it down in the past so a few stripped screws and bolts to tackle. Anyway mostly tackled these now with the exception of 3 completely stripped JIS screws on the clutch cover.

Next job will be to remove the engine for disassembly / inspection. however before I go too far I want to do a quick degrease of the engine, removal of old engine paint and hopefully tackle some of the oxidation.

Anyone got any tips on the best de-greasers and any way to remove oxidation.

Pics hopefully attached.

Project Board / CB550F2 another cafe racer project
« on: January 14, 2018, 04:29:40 PM »
Hi All,

This is the first project I've been worked on and if I'm being honest, the first bike I've actually done any work on at all (thinking I've bitten off more than I can chew at times).

Its been a while since my introduction post, and a couple of questions on the forum as I've had some pretty busy few months with family things so I haven't been able to work on the bike much at all, but thought I'd give a run down of where I am and problems I've got at the moment and perhaps throw up some pics and a quick video of the bike idling (some advice on this would be welcome).

Here is the bike as I picked it up, nice looking decent condition from my noobie view point at least, managed to get the bike up and running if a little clunky and it wouldn't idle at all.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

The carbs were pretty gummed up so first task was to strip and clean these, they were pretty bad, it was extremely difficult to disassemble and remove the jets and floats. a couple of the floats broke off during this process as they were seized solid as were the jets.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Once I got these all removed I popped them in for an ultrasonic clean which is one noisy machine.

https://youtu.be/rODUkeJwIKM (video of the ultra sonic cleaner).

They came out pretty clean and then I rebuilt them with new jets (cheers to nurse julie on advice on where to buy jets), floats o rings etc.

One of the slides was a bit damaged and I had to bodge it by sanding a pretty big burr.

The original bike was missing a number of pieces of the airbox and the airbox in general was falling apart so I decided for the moment I'll be running Pods (while I work on it) but will be putting velocity stacks on it eventually. So based on information I've seen here and on other forums I've jetted with 40 pilot jets and 115 main jets.

I've also noticed the solenoid for the starter is broken so will need to replace that (just waiting for the new one to arrive). So at the moment I'm kick starting the bike. After reattaching the carbs I must confess I did make a bit of a stupid error by not attaching the throttle cables and wondered why it wasn't starting :(

However now I've got the bike starting with full choke and sort of idling. It seems a bit clunky, originally it was only firing on 3 cylinders but threw in some new sparks and its firing on all 4. However when I close the choke the engine revs go up quite significantly and won't come back down.

Other problems I seem, the number 1 and 2 pipes are quite discoloured, 3-4 aren't discoloured at all, however this is the case from when I picked it up.

Also the bike seems to be running pretty hot with smoke coming off the pipes after idling for a few mins (I'm assuming this could be some oil that has leaked in the past but not really sure).

https://youtu.be/eShcfpoUhUY

Any help or pointers of where I start to look for these issues would be great.

Other bits and pieces, I'm stripping the bike down as I intend to get the frame blasted and powder coated, but wanted to get the engine at least running smoothly before getting to far in to the cosmetics.

I do plan on re doing all the electrical components as quite a lot of it appears to be either falling apart of held on with chewing gum.

CB500/550 / Carb slides CB550F
« on: November 20, 2017, 10:21:29 AM »
Hi All,

Did a carb rebuild (CB550F), ultra sonic clean and replaced all the jets. the carbs look like they are in much better shape now but were so gunked up and rusted up that some parts broke off during removal (like the bars the floats are attached with) got some replacements on the way.

One thing that did concern me was the slides, looks like someone in the past has either had something pretty solid inside the carb (stone or something) or tried to force the slide in the wrong way round (so the grove doesn't match up with the little brass thing inside the carb), either way one slide had been dented at the bottom quite considerably which meant it doesn't smoothly move up and down, in fact it was a pain to remove and refit, so I decided to file/sand off that burr rather than try and source a new slide. It all seems to fit not and is much much smoother when you move the throttle linkage however I'm worried that by sanding this off it may cause other problems fueling or the like, does anyone have any experience with this or have any suggestions? Would you guys just replace the slides?

Cheers

CB500/550 / Advice regulator rectifier
« on: November 10, 2017, 12:47:57 PM »
Hi All,

Jumping the gun here a little bit as I'm just getting started with my CB550F project, but needed to get a battery to start the bike up. I got a decent price on an antigravity battery 8 cell so thought I'd give that a go, I've seen a few bikes running these without an issue, however I've seen a few posts on this forum that advise against running lithium batteries and a few conversations about running new Regulator/rectifiers with these batteries. I was wondering if there is anyone out there that has a CB550 with an antigravity battery that could advise on voltage rec/reg and any success or issues they've had (more than theoretical issues).

Specific questions I have:

Anyone know of a decent MOSFET R/R around 13.5-14.5V
Anyone know what is actually going on inside a solid state R/R (is this essentially a MOSFET R/R as I understand those and diodes)
Any more advice

As a side note if you hadn't guessed I'll be doing a cafe racer build hence the choice in batteries. Also I've got the bike running off the battery but don't want to run this long term without replacing the old R/R.

Cheers

New Member Introductions / New CB550F owner/builder from reading uk
« on: October 30, 2017, 12:53:25 PM »
Hi All,

Just thought I'd introduce myself. I've recently picked up a 79 cb550f that's been sitting for 7-8 years and in the process of getting it up and running. This is my first bike I've attempted to work on my other bikes are all fairly new (SV650, triumph tiger 800 and tiger 1200) so was up for a bit more hands on stuff. I'm currently in reading and trying to do this bike at weekends when I have time.

Currently the bike doesn't idle and doesn't run particularly well, but does start from a kick.

Things I've done so far:

Installed a battery (it was stored without)
Changed the oil and new oil filter
Taken off the carbs to give them a good clean (in progress)

I was looking to find a decent place to buy a carb rebuild kit (I've heard bad things of keyster kits but they seem the most readily available) , with gaskets and possibly new jets (maybe not needed haven't had a good look yet). I've noticed some damage to some of the screws on the outside carbs (drain screws) looks like someone has stripped them a bit so guessing there might be similar issues inside.

Looks like a previous owner has been rather botchy with their repair jobs (some of the electrics are held in with chewing gum etc)

Got a fair few jobs that need doing on the bike after i get it running.

Cheers
