Thanks gtmdriver. Sounds like a good idea. I think it will probably come down to what my accountant says ( the wife) whether it’s a nice new cap or just the cost of a couple of new pins. 😀

That looks good Bryanj. My original one is pitted and a bit rusty. That new one would solve the problem with the pins as well.

Thanks Bryanj. Thought it wouldn’t be straightforward. 😀 Do you know if I can get those bits from Silvers?

Morning. I am getting my tank and panels ready for posting to Menno for re painting. I am having trouble working out how to get the pin things out to remove the tank cap and fittings.  Do they just pull out or is it more complicated than that? Also can I re use them?

Great advice Julie thanks. My pads have always looked Like there’s less thickness on the inside pad than the outside one. Is that normal?

Thanks all for your advice. Sounds to me I might leave it another couple of years yet. The oil in the reservoir is quite a clear colour and it seems that maybe it doesn’t need doing just yet.

I think Peter the previous owner overhauled the whole lot about 3 years ago. The Caliper etc looks in very good condition. I’m wondering whether I need to do it now, it was more the stuff in the bottom and the internet saying needs doing every 2 years that made me think I needed to do it?

Thanks guys. Do you all change the oil every 2 years or is that a bit of overkill ?

Afternoon all. I have some grungy stuff in the bottom of my brake Caliper reservoir and wanted to clean it out. I’m thinking it would be a good time to renew the brake fluid as well at the same time. I’ve looked on the internet and I think it’s within my mechanical capabilities ( famous last words). Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also it says to use DOT 3 but have not seen that around. Is DOT 4 ok to use? Regards, Chris.

The topbox has always been and still is a typical British phenomenon. You see thousands and thousands of them. Although they can be handy in city traffic, please realise they - on our bikes - will affect handling considerably at high speeds.
Back in the day my brother and I both had CJ 250T’s. His had a fairing and a top box. I was riding it one day along the A30 near Sunningdale at about 60 mph and got into a tank slapper which I couldn’t control and I ended up sliding along the road. Always thought it was because of the fairing/ top box.

Donation made. Thanks to Steve for keeping the site going, it’s very useful for inexperienced mechanics such as me and to people such as Julie and K2-K6 who always come back with prompt and helpful replies.
