Misc / Open / Re: 400/4 model kit
« on: January 05, 2019, 09:34:35 PM »
I used to build loads of Airfix kits, mostly aircraft, when I was a kid and got quite good at modifying them into different variants etc.
So when I found an un-built Airfix railway loco in the loft a couple of months ago, I thought I'd build it to try an rekindle my early days.
Big mistake. I've nearly finished it and it looks like the work of a 4 year old. Glue smudges, wonky bits, hairs and dust in the paint.
The trouble is that at the age of 64, the eyesight has deteriorated, despite glasses, and the feeling in the finger tips is much reduced making handling small parts very difficult.
However, I was thinking of putting this together but with a little more care and because its a much bigger scale (1:12) so the parts are bigger:

This is from Hiroboy, but out of stock at the moment, but have my name down for one.
This is a also an attempt at rekindling my youth as a B-reg C100 was my first Bike (in 1968) and the first of what became a succession of bigger and bigger Hondas.
Best regards,
Phil

No, this was before Fed Ex even got established here. The Swiss Cottage dispatch company was just a bloke with a 'phone who advertised in the Evening Standard promising good money which turned out to be a load of b****x.

I thought an MoT was a requirement for getting the bike registered here. Am I wrong? Its still on its Colorado plates and was going to insure it for the trip to the tester by using the frame number. Is that they way to do it?

I think I can beat you youngsters as I was despatch riding just after the Stone Age. I was booted out of Thames Poly (now Greenwich Uni) in 1974 and so like everyone else big wages were the attraction.
I started by using my faithful candy gold CB250K2 and working for some mob in Swiss Cottage. Did that for a few months until I locked up the front wheel in the wet on the Embankment and was on my arse in an instant. Bike was quite damaged so I thought use somebody elses.
So I joined Mercury Despatch thrashing orange Suzuki 250s around the capital. Did that for a few months and just got fed up of all the near misses and not really getting all the money I thought I'd get.
Went off driving van sales for Lyons Cakes after that. Eat loads of just out of date cakes and got fat.

PS After nearly 2 years, I have booked an MoT for the K2 next Thursday. Don't know if it will pass as it is LOUD! I'll let you know.

CB750 / Re: Getting cb750k on centre stand
« on: August 12, 2018, 10:24:23 AM »
Hello all,
I’ve been away for over 12 months with medical issues (now sorted) and a full time job (need to sort) but have been avidly reading all your posts.
All this time the K2 has been sitting in the garage and have done nothing to it. The last time I pulled it on the centre stand, it was a real struggle as I’d just had a heart op (rib cage open job) and that hurt.
Now when I bought the K2 from DK it didn’t have a centre stand so I procured one from ebay. Came from Holland and was I think from an F1.
On fitting the stand I thought it was a bit on the long side as the rear wheel sits about 2 ½ inches clear of the ground; other 750s I have seen seem to be less. As its longer, I have to pull back and lift more: hence the struggle. Can someone have a quick measure of theirs (bike) and if its less then I’ve got the wrong stand.
Additionally, I was less than happy about the new fork gaiters I fitted. These were from Dave Silver and must be too short as they have ripped themselves to bits over the year sitting there with the forks on full extension. Good way to blow £18.
That’s it for now, I intend to get the bike MoT’d by the end of the summer (looks to be about now) and will report back.
Ride safe!
Phil

CB750 / What did I waste my time on this Easter weekend...?
« on: April 18, 2017, 10:08:44 PM »
Well I tried to get the previously running K2 going again, but no joy.
When the starter button is pressed, I still only get 10.5 volts at the solenoid which is not enough to trigger it - just can't figure it out. I'm fairly handy with electrics (or so I thought). The (new) solenoid clicks when connected to the fully charged (new) 12v battery. And there is continuity across red/black wires when the (new) ignition switch is moved to position 1. Why is it that there is only 10.5v in the black wire circuit? That's ok for lights, horn and indicators but not enough for the solenoid.
Its been sat on the centre-stand since Sept and hasn't moved, and it will sit there until I (or someone else) can figure it out.
I got so cheesed off I got the Mercedes out which started on the button after 6 months in the garage (I only tax it for 6 months - I refuse to pay £250 or so for a full year). MoT next week and off into the sunshine - the K2 can stay where it is.
Any ideas anybody; rectifier, safe start device, something else.....
Thanks in advance.

CB750 / Re: REPLACING ROCKER COVER GASKET
« on: April 18, 2017, 11:48:56 AM »
Hi all,
I managed to change the rocker cover gasket a few months ago. It was pretty easy if you are careful and now it doesn't leak. Just follow the chappie on you tube.
Tightening the head bolts - don't think so as you cannot get the rocker cover off; you're only able to lift it a centimetre or so which allows you to stretch the (very expensive) gasket over the top of the engine (one side at a time).
The reason it leaked is that I had put the gasket on the wrong way round: you'd think the sohc 4 is symmetrical - WRONG! The odd 'lump' on the gasket, that points inwards, goes on the LEFT (as you are sitting on the bike).
Mine not running at the moment; I'll post about that later..

CB750 / My CB750 Book by Mark Parie
« on: March 25, 2017, 10:48:10 PM »
You might remember me posting about the disaterous delivery of the above book - the DPD driver dropped the package in to a puddle on its corner and some water ingress took place damaging the book.
After loads of emails I finally have a replacement which means the original book is no longer needed. So the fairest way was to stick it on Flea Bay - seemed the most logical thing to do. Please see:-

Its a hell of a book and should be as I've never paid £65 for a paperback before.
My bike still hasn't been off the centre-stand since before my op in September and to be honest I've lost a bit of interest due to the electrics not doing what they are supposed to do.
If you are out in the sunshine; ride safe.

Misc / Open / My Honda CB750 - Mark Paris
« on: February 28, 2017, 11:09:46 PM »
Hello all,
I've been pondering for some time as to whether or not I could justify spending £65 on the paperback book mentioned above. Well I did, and it turned up yesterday, delivered to a neighbour courtesy of NPD.
As you can see the bozo who dropped it off dropped it corner first into a puddle beforehand. The consequence is that the very good quality paper just hovered up the moisture resulting in the mess below. Still readable (and a good read it looks too) but this really gets my goat and I will be claiming a replacement book from LuLu or seeking compensation from the white van fleet of muppets that delivered it.
Bring on the drones....

CB750 / Starter Safety Switch
« on: February 12, 2017, 09:29:42 AM »
Hi All,
Tried to start the DK special yesterday (had it running before) and it was DEAD.
I'm only getting 10 volts at the solenoid when the button is pressed - the battery is fully charged.
Is it something to with this? (photo should be attached).
The yellow/red & black wires disappear inside and don't come out,
It's described as a safety switch and it looks as though it's dropped down previously and got mangled up in the drive chain. Which won't have helped...
- How does it work?
- How does it come apart?
- Can it be bypassed?
- Can it be fixed?
As always any ideas welcomed.
Thanks in advance.

CB750 / Throttle cable routing
« on: January 05, 2017, 10:53:40 AM »
Hello All,
HNY.
Tried to put the tank back on last night and as its all been apart for so long, I couldn't remember how the throttle cables were routed underneath.
Anybody got a pic of the left side with the tank off?
I've got them running over the top of the coils and it doesn't seem right as they are slightly kinked (even though they work ok).
Thanks in advance.

CB750 / Change the valve cover gasket without removing engine
« on: November 20, 2016, 03:58:20 PM »
I posted about this before but couldn't find the thread.
Basically the 750 is a DK Special requiring loads of work and parts including a new head gasket. Engine removed, head skimmed, put together and ran fine; except for a big oil leak from front of the valve cover gasket. Apparently it is easy to put these on upside down and because the cam box is not symmetrical, it will leak - well Haynes never said 'owt about it.
Looking at it; the engine would have to come out again as the valve cover cannot be lifted off in situ. I couldn't face that as I've been in hospital having a new valve (heart) of my own so can't lift anything heavy - break the ribs again see. Ask Julie.
So I saw some chappie on You Tube change the gasket by undoing the 14 screws and lifting it up. So that's what I did (see photos if they made it through) and was fairly fiddly including having to remove the coils which was a right pain.
Just ordered a new genuine gasket off DS for £20 (WHAT !!), and will fit it and let you know the outcome.
Cheers
Phil

CB750 / Re: Its a 'keeper'......
« on: September 12, 2016, 09:04:46 PM »
Seems as though Bryanj is right. I've got the cam box gasket on the wrong way. There's an 'ear' which points inwards and has to be on the left hand side. To change it I was thinking I'd have to take the engine out again; but not according to this fella who made the same mistake I did. If you can get the screws out you can lift it up and swop the gasket:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2orch75W2uI

Also looking on You Tube it seems as though you can 'lap in' the carb needle valves with a mild abrasive such as toothpaste or Solvol metal polish. Any of you done this? Was it successful?
Thanks in advance.

CB750 / Its a 'keeper'......
« on: September 12, 2016, 12:32:55 PM »
Hi All,
Finally got the K2 running down the road, went through the gears and all seems to work so think I will keep it. Ran like a dog though due (I think) over -
fuelling; had petrol dropping out the over-flow tubes and ran on 2/3 cylinders, black smoke from exhausts, smells like my local Texaco etc.
I'm pretty sure the floats were OK and I checked the heights. So can only be worn out needle valves is my guess. Or am I missing something? Whaddaya think everybody? Any advice welcomed before I shell out £30 to DS for a set of new ones.
Also, a bigger problem may be the oil leak I have at the front of the cam box. This is where the cam chain throws off its oil. It has a new gasket there and I'm pretty sure I tightened up all the screws and bolts to the correct torque (7ftlbs). The question is with the tank off and the breather box off, is it possible to get at the screws and tighten them up? If I've got to take the engine out again I'll scream blue murder !!

My pictures were too big and wouldn't go through.
Just took these on my phone; much smaller but rubbish quality.
Cheers
