Usually quite a few of them seized up on the A3 August bank holiday heading for the IoW mod festival, maybe it's still there.

The only time I ever rode a scooter I nearly fell off on the first corner as I discovered that ground clearance was non existent. I turned round, rode back and returned it to the owner. Despite it being nearly 50 years ago I just remembered his name was Hector.

I did enjoy pretending to be caught up by a huge gang of them, on their way to Blackpool for a Bank Holiday weekend, then dropping a gear and nailing it. In the 70’s there would have been serious consequences if they had caught me.

We used to sit on a pub wall near a roundabout on a main route to the seaside, and when the poor old scooter boys went past, we used to shout "get of and milk it", which just about summed up the ride quality of a scooter, but they ended up more popular in those days.

tbh I liked my scooters - aside from some basic weather protection the perching on the seat with no crossbar is quite comfortable below 60 mph.
Scooters with floor pedals were even better, more for cruizing than racing - I guess a Harley is as far away from a straight motorcycle as you can get - they seem popular enough.

around town...scooters are OK....but as an engineering concept, they are awful for speeds. Small wheel, wierd frames, engines hung on the suspension...

Oddly enough, if you wanted a 2 wheeler to electrify...I reckon they would be perfect. Fit a hub motor, fill the space up with batteries, and it would look pretty much the same without any loss of performance or character. In fact...it would go better and sound better. Brushless hub motor would probably mean less unsprung weight

As I live in Blackpool we had plenty of that. One Saturday afternoon in 1976 whilst walking through town we came upon a group of around 100 mods and only four of us. We got chased off up Dickson road by a group of about 20. Unfortunately one of them was a better runner than the rest and pulled away from his group, when we looked round the others had given up and he was on his own. He went from shouting abuse to terror in a second, I can still see the panic on his face it was a picture. As we had run about half a mile already we just slapped him a bit and let him go. Fun days.

Sorry guys, but if its got two wheels and fun, does it matter?? and yes I have a Lammy as well as my CB750, also have a Mini, so quite a mix to have fun on/in.... gone are the days of hatred, and although some of you claim being chased by scooter boy`s, I remember the same the other way round... I just enjoy bikes of all types and the work that has gone into their restoration.

This was in 1976 when opinions and ideas were different. By the way, it was them that chased us we didn't ask them to react that way. Personally I have never had any animosity towards scooter riders ever, just a funny story (real not claimed) that fits the thread.

I'm if the age where I had never heard of mods etc before Quadrophenia film. Suddenly as a motorcyclist I was labelled a rocker.... Then I saw  tension with the scooter types, whom I had only ever seen as bikers if a different ilk. Sure many scooterists felt the same. Labels!

If I find my 400 four too small then my next 2-wheeler will probably be a scooter - I so much want to re-live my old Maico Letta days but with disc brakes & better suspension - I do like the look of those Royal Alloy  300cc scooters !

I've had lots of fun keeping up with my mate on his Gilera GP800 on my 750F1 on twisty Welsh roads so I can see the attraction. He has just changed to a Honda 750 Forza, so fun ahead.

Cheers

Dennis

The local dealer has one in his window I walk past it every time I have an outpatients appointment at the old DRI hospital in town.

Yes I think they have stopped selling Hondas now - I bought my NSU Quickly from Bob Minions  when they were on Park Street circa 1963 - it was in an outside shed for £15.00

Were you in Derby when Palin's were there as Honda dealers?

Aside from 4 years away at Uni on a thick sandwich course I've lived in Derby since I was 7 yrs old. Strangely enough I sold my old Maico Letta privately - a week later it was in Palins showroom at double the price!
I also used to get spares from Mackton Motors. There was a great shop down the alley from Palins just before Bradshaw St - all long gone.
I also remember when Samways were Honda Dealers!

Samways for the highways wa the slogan! I spent my teens in Duffield with Bill Lomas's shop down the road in Milford. His lad Mick used to race at Darley Moor around the time I did.

When I worked a footbeat in Derby Samways were on my patch Circa 1979 when the Talk of the Midlands replaced the old Popular Cinema on Mill St.

Were you an Ecclesbourne lad then ?
Our daughter was a pupil there - a brilliant school even today.

No but my sister did. Never took my 11+ as lived abroad until 13, also year was full. Actually too thick! Went to Anthony Gell in Wirksworth. That too was and is, a good school. Although a lovely place, Duffield always a bit snobby. ;)
