CB350/400 / Hondaman Ignition
« on: April 08, 2017, 06:11:10 PM »
Has anyone fitted a Hondaman ignition system to a 400/4?
Looking for inspiration on where to mount the control box, which measures 100 x 50 x 25mm.
Thanks in advance for suggestions.

CB350/400 / Valve Guides
« on: August 30, 2016, 12:08:04 PM »
I don't know if these might help anyone on here, but I currently have a set of valve guides for a 350/400 Four listed on eBay.
These came with some other parts I purchased and I do not need them so I have listed them.
New price from DS is the best part of £90 for the set including VAT, if they can get them (they are listed as a Special Order part).
Listing here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CB-400-4-400-Four-CB350-Four-Valve-Guides-12202-333-315-12203-333-335-/272356181618?hash=item3f69b18672:g:kagAAOSwFV9Xwxdc

What is it? / Rear Light Bracket
« on: April 08, 2016, 12:01:30 PM »
Probably an easy one for the experts out there.
Came across this in a box of bits.
Looks pretty much the same as others I have seen and mounting positions are the same but construction is different.
Outer part is made of two pieces rather than one (overlap can be seen near the top of the number plate mount).
There is also a ridge down the centre rather than it being smooth.
Is this just an earlier version of the part? Thanks.

I recently needed a Wheel Bearing Retainer Removal Tool to replace the front wheel bearings on my 400/4.
Looking around I came upon this tool listed on eBay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-WHEEL-BEARING-RETAINER-SOCKET-FRONT-WHEEL-TOOL-SERVICE-CASTLE-NUT-HR-/301893438326?
The seller sells on eBay as user turbosuzukis and has a whole load of tools for various purposes listed.
Having emailed him beforehand he seems a very helpful guy and the tools look nicely made.
The tool was about £5 cheaper than others I found, including first class recorded delivery.
According to the paperwork it was posted 90 minutes after the order was received.
At the bottom of the paperwork it states 'We will always resolve problems at no cost to yourself'. I hadn't hoped to test this but discovered he had sent the wrong tool.
No problem, instant admission that it was his fault and the correct replacement sent straight away. I think the first one was for the rear wheel bearing retainer.
The job is now done and being impressed with the service I thought I would give the guy a plug on here.

What is it? / Rear Mudguards / Fenders
« on: March 30, 2016, 02:13:49 PM »
These mudguards (or fenders if they are from US bikes?) came with some parts I bought recently.
The rustier of the two (first two pics) had the pictured painted light bracket fitted. My guess is CB550 K3.
The shinier of the two (last two pics) had no light bracket fitted but the chrome one pictured was with the parts and has the right hole spacing.
Can anyone confirm my guess on the first one and suggest what the second one may be off? Thanks in advance.

CB350/400 / Wheel Bearing Removal
« on: March 01, 2016, 02:38:47 PM »
Having picked up a good 350F front wheel for little more than the cost of rechroming my pitted rim I thought I would check the bearings before fitting. The wheel is supposedly from a 10000 mile bike but 40 year old grease possibly not the best.
I picked up a Bearing Retaining Ring removal tool from a very helpful guy on eBay (may give him a plug in the Recommended Sources section) so that bit is out of the way.
Next I need to remove the bearings. Any suggestions for a suitable tool? The Haynes manual suggests a soft metal drift but isn't entirely clear, the Honda Shop Manual stops at removing the retaining ring.
Bearings feel OK but at very least probably want cleaning and greasing, if they are destroyed by removal then new ones will be in order!

CB750 / Rickman Engine Crash bars
« on: February 07, 2016, 05:28:38 PM »
If anyone wants a set of these  ....
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-CB750-RICKMAN-ENGINE-CRASH-BARS-SOHC-K-SERIES-F1-F2-/351647308181?hash=item51dfd01995:g:mQsAAOSw5dNWjVcm
Looks like a rechrome would improve them but a period accessory and you don't see them for sale that often.

CB350/400 / 400/4 Grab Rail and Rack
« on: December 07, 2015, 09:41:33 AM »
Saw this while browsing on eBay (as you do ....)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-cb400f-grab-rail-/291632296496?hash=item43e6a3b230:g:slQAAOSwwE5WYx0j
Listing says these were fitted to Asian market bikes. Maybe they were, Parts List doesn't cover these variants.
Looks quite neat, would give a pillion passenger something to hold on to if that's what you need.
If I didn't already have a rack fitted I could be tempted just for the look.
Seller has grab rails for various other bikes. Listing also says the seller has racks for the 400/4 available, with pics.

CB350/400 / Fork Oil Seal Removal
« on: October 14, 2015, 03:43:39 PM »
Has anyone got any tips for removing stubborn fork oil seals?
There is a thread in the 'Tricks and Tips' section that suggests gently lifting with a screwdriver (http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,2992.msg17999.html).
Everything to this point came apart easily but the seals seem happy where they are and don't want to budge, and I don't want to damage the fork legs.
Any thoughts?

What is it? / What is this rack from?
« on: September 10, 2015, 03:37:49 PM »
Bought some assorted spares recently which included this rack.
Looks like it could be a Rickman from the style and construction but what is it off?
The shape of the indicator mounts may give a clue but I don't recognise them.
Any suggestions?

What is it? / What is this Seat?
« on: August 26, 2015, 03:28:46 PM »
Found this seat while clearing the garage roof at my mother's house.
Not even sure it is Honda although back in the late 70's I owned a CB450 Black Bomber so maybe from that model.
Looks like it should locate somehow at the front of the seat (2nd pic) with a bracket on the studs at the back to bolt the seat
in place, but also seems to have fittings for a metal support arm of some kind (3rd pic).
Cover doesn't look original, may or may not be correct pattern.
Any suggestions would be much welcomed!

I used PJS Transwift when I bought my 400. Chosen on the basis of reviews and price, I was very pleased with the service.
A recent post by member MCTID noted that he too had been very pleased with the service provided by this company.
So adding a post here in the appropriate forum.
Website at http://www.motorcycledeliveryservice.co.uk/, cost around £150.

Misc / Open / Powder Coating - Advice Please
« on: July 08, 2015, 02:51:42 PM »
I am contemplating getting a frame and other parts powder coated at some point, never having had this done before.
From reading various threads I know the recommendation is to strip out swinging arm bearings and replace with new after coating.
What do people do about steering head bearings? I may be wrong but my understanding is that replacement of the various
parts is less of a DIY proposition than swinging arm bearings.
