Misc / Open / Number plate advice
« on: February 14, 2016, 05:53:17 PM »
Hello all,

I know the issue of plates has come up a few times, but I can't find the answer I'm looking for.

I am looking at getting a road legal number plate and would like to get a pressed aluminium plate ideally, but want to get the smallest size I can.

I am aware of some of the regulations, but wondered if anyone can shed any light on the type to use for a "period" looking plate.

My bike was born in 1976 if this helps.

I was looking at one of these, but think it might be too big??

what type/size of plates are you guys using for similar aged bikes and where is the cheapest place to get one?

Cheers

CB350/400 / CB400F Carb tubes
« on: December 12, 2015, 05:19:27 PM »
Hello,

Can anyone specify the lengths of the 4 drain tubes that come out of the bottom of  each of the carbs and weather they are all the same length?
I also need the lengths of the 2 breather tubes that come out of the top of the carbs and the fuel tubing length from the tank to the carbs please? My original carb tubes were hacked up so I have nothing to compare them too.

Im about to cut mine, but want to make sure they are right first time. I've looked at the parts manual but I can't find anything about the lengths.

Hopefully going to get it started for the first time this weekend!!!!

Any help appreciated.

CB350/400 / Tacho worm drive removal/installation
« on: November 27, 2015, 09:28:15 AM »
Hi guys,

I need to replace the worm drive in the rocker cover as it is worn, but can't for the life of me see how to remove it. I've looked online for the answer with no avail.

Obviously I turned to you guys here for the answer.

I have spare rocker so will have to do this twice and fit the better one.

If anyone has pictures of there removal that would be helpful too.

Cheers

CB350/400 / Gudgeon pin circlip orientation
« on: November 19, 2015, 06:38:16 PM »
Hi all

Just a quick question, I'm about to instal my pistons after buttoning up the crankcases last night and wanted to know the correct orientation of the gudgeon pin circlip.

The Haynes manual says it must overlap the screwdriver slot completely, which I read as meaning it should be installed in a U shape orientation like how I have it in the picture below.

But my confusion comes from the fact the Haynes manual photo below shows them the other way up, plus when I removed the originals  they were that way up.

Can anyone confirm the correct orientation please.

Thank you.

CB350/400 / Con rod stamp markings
« on: November 13, 2015, 08:37:45 PM »
Hello all,

I need some help with the stamp  markings on my con rods.

I am about to reassemble the crank and add the new bearings etc, but I am unsure which way round the con rods should face.

I didn't take them off to see how they go back as the engineer who measured the runout for me removed them.

They are stamped with a different  number of dots on each one from 1-4, which I guess is number 1 being the left hand side of the engine and number 4 being the right hand side if you were sat on the bike?

But should the stamped marks be  facing forward or rearward again with the engine the right way up and as if you were sat on the bike?

Any help would be much appreciated!

CB350/400 / Engine building guide/Loctite locations
« on: November 05, 2015, 11:43:40 AM »
Hello all,

I finally have all my engine shells and bearings after a long months wait and am about ready to assemble the engine.

Does anyone know of a good walkthrough/ guide/ tips on how to put it back together correctly and especially which bolts need loctite and which loctite to use?

It seems all too easy to make a mistake and I am thinking of making a downloadable checklist/guide once I'm done assembling mine to help others too, but if you pros out there can be of any help, that would be great!

I'm fairly confident in putting it back together, but just wanted some reassurance.

Again any help is greatly appreciated!

I will be updating the build thread soon now it's got some momentum again!

CB350/400 / Front and rear wheel spacers (collars) CB400F
« on: October 15, 2015, 01:17:26 PM »
Does anyone know the dimensions for the front wheel spacer and the two rear wheel spacers?

I don't think I have the right ones on my bike as the rear wheel doesn't fit in the swingarm. The bike came with a different set of wheels and when I a combination of those spacers it fits and the alignment is correct.

If I can get the correct dimensions I will get some stainless steel ones made up.

CB350/400 / Metzeler ME11-ME77 Classic
« on: October 06, 2015, 01:37:19 PM »
Hi all.

Im looking for a set of tyres for my CB400F with a classic tread pattern, but still with good grip levels in the wet and dry.

I know there are a lot of posts about tyres and I've read most of them, but I'm still undecided.

Has anyone used the Metzeler ME11-ME77 Classic tyre? Looks the part and seems to have good reviews on handling.

Any other suggestions for a classic looking tread for this bike?

What are you using and how do you rate them?

Cheers

CB350/400 / gasket sets
« on: October 06, 2015, 09:51:14 AM »
Hi all,

I am in the process of ordering a new gasket set for reassembly, I will be updating my project page soon!

I've been very busy on the bike and with work so haven't had time to build and post, but I am making progress at last!

My question is, I was going to order a gasket set from DSS (NE Brand I think), But I've been reading some horror stories about people having leaks a few thousand miles in from the same place.

I was wondering if there are alternatives to this? (Ive seen a company called wemoto selling an Athena kit), has anyone fitted this?

Or are there any tips when applying the gaskets and O"rings?

I was going to buy original valve stem seals, as they seem cheap enough from DSS and don't want to risk it.

Also what product are people using to seal the crankcases together?

Any prefered places to buy these from?

As always any advice would be greatly appreciated!

CB350/400 / Front and rear hub offset?
« on: August 18, 2015, 06:38:22 PM »
Hi all,

Just about to rebuild my wheels, but forgot to take an offset measurement, doh!

Can anyone confirm if they are central on these or have an offset?

I know a previous post from Kenny it's implied they are central, but just after confirmation.

Thank you.

CB350/400 / Should I grease my shaft??
« on: July 30, 2015, 06:28:34 PM »
Hi all,

I thought the title might grab your attention ;)

Tomorrow I am having my front and rear hubs powder coated and was going to instal the new bearings while they are hot and freeze the bearings to aid installation.

My question is, should I grease the inner axle shafts on the front and rear hubs and if so what type of grease should I use?
The new bearings I am installing are All balls, sealed bearings so I guess no greasing necessary there.

I was going to instal the cush drive rubbers while I was at it, but I've been sent the wrong ones :'(

Any help would be much obliged.

Cheers

Project Board / CB400 Project
« on: July 21, 2015, 11:40:07 AM »
Hi all, This is my first ever motorcycle build and I thought I would share the journey with the community as you have been very helpful with your advice and maybe it will help others doing similar projects.

I acquired the vehicle on the 03/07/15 from an old guy who had had it since 2012 and had started to do some jobs on it, (badly as it turns out).

It read 46000 on the odometer  and looked like this in the advert.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I went to see the bike and it was already partly dismantled with what I think are constar wheels? off another bike.

I spent a good hour looking over it to see if the major bits were there, the guy started it up and it sounded OK, apart from blowing from the exhaust,  which he told me was because they weren't tightened up yet. He assured me that he had acquired a lot of parts and everything was there.  Knowing that I wanted a project bike that needed some TLC we haggled and I took her off his hands for £900.

I've set myself a loose budget of £1000 to rebuild and no more than 10 months to complete so I can ride it next summer.

I plan on doing most if not all the work myself , but might need some advice and guidance along the way.

CB350/400 / Major problem?
« on: July 16, 2015, 03:41:06 PM »
Hi all,

I've been stripping my cb400 project down and was jut about to remove the engine when i noticed this......

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

A close up of what looks like a repair and a chipped head!

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

is this going to be a big problem?

I was planning on stripping and rebuilding the whole engine, but can this be repaired?

I've just drained the oil out to remove the engine so I guess I cant tess compression to see if it leaks, but it does look like the chip is filled with some flexible rubber filler stuff.

What are your thoughts on this?

CB350/400 / Engine cleaning/ degreasing question
« on: July 14, 2015, 02:50:38 PM »
Hi all,

I was wondering what people are using to clean and degrease their engines and other metal parts with?
I have seen a product called simple green, but it's too expensive and hard to get hold of.

I want to clean all the engine parts once disassembled ready for painting and any other metal parts ready for painting/polishing and so on. Ideally without using a parts washer or spending a fortune.

I was looking at the gunk range, but not sure if they leave any residues on the metal?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006ZZ4AHS?redirect=true&ref_=s9_im_co_g263_i2

Any simple  suggestions?

Cheers

CB350/400 / CB 400 Side stand angle
« on: July 05, 2015, 04:56:48 PM »
Hello all,

I'm looking for some help with the sidestand on my CB400.

Some numpty has bodge welded the stand on my bike at the wrong angle as the bike leans too far over.

it might even be the wrong stand, but either way I am going to have to cut a section out of the frame and weld a new piece in and put the stand at the correct angle.

could anyone tell me the correct angle and length it should be please? I've checked online with at no avail.

I only  picked it up on Friday and at first seemed to be reasonable condition, but the more I dig the more pieces are missing or bodged.

Cheers

Andy
