Cheers guys!
One of the reasons I sent it to a specialist was because I couldn't 100% Read the letters and numbers, I couldn't decide if it was a 1 or a 2.
Glad to have someone with your experience on here brian to confirm everything! I will rake some more photos soon and post.
After the engineer measured the crank runout etc he plastigauged the cases and worked out all the bearings for me, costly but he came out with different shell colours to me, so glad I got a professional to check!
I ended up with all green main bearings and 3 green and 1 yellow for the big ends.
Took ages to arrive and in dribs and drabs.

I called the engineer who stamped the con rods yesterday and he confirmed that if assembling upside down the dots should be facing the back of the engine with the con rods hanging down. Torqued everything up and RE assembled the top crankcase, should bolt it all together today!

Cheers guys, I figured it out in the end, really hard to see any noticeable difference in the shape of the two at first, but I got there eventually. Strange my Haynes manual doesn't have that image, the clymer did. But it was slightly different.

I agree, if you look further back in this post you will see Metzelers reply to my email asking the same thing and they recommended a 90/90 as they don't do the original size for the front, but they said to me on the phone that I will have no issues fitting a 90/90.

Other tyre fitting places I spoke to wouldn't fit anything other than the original size tyres to my rims.  On the other hand there are hundreds of threads with people fitting 90/90 and 100/90's on the net and I haven't seen one about people having problems after doing so.

I was advised by many to stay clear of anything larger than above as it would cause steering issues, could make the bike lean over too far on the sidestand, as well as affecting the speedo etc.

each to your own I guess.

No problem, Thank you anyway. very kind of you!

Off topic but I don't suppose you could give me some advice on installing the piston rings?

I have a set of genuine Honda rings but am not totally sure which is the top and second ring.

One is slightly smaller than the other and one has a silver edge, which looks like there is a slight chamfer maybe. Im guessing this is the second ring as the Clymer manual states?

The other is a tad bigger and is completely black, Top ring? Both have a tiny N on one side which I am also guessing must be the top?

Both seem the same thickness to me, but I'm not sure.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Cheers Trigger, That's very kind,  I have nearly assembled everything now and am ready to seal the cases.
If you think it is better to use the graphogen I can wait for it to arrive.

I definitely don't want to do the job twice!

I'll PM you.
Cheers

Cheers for your help guys.

I will contact the engineer this morning to see if he can shed some light on it.
It was nearly 3 months ago now though,  as that's how long it's taken to get all the shells together,  seemed to be a European shortage or something!
I have got a small parts washer, I washed most of the parts last night, dried them off with an airline and bagged them all up to keep them clean.
A newbie question for sure, but can anyone shed any light on which bore is number 1? Is it the same on any vehicle?  It's a steep learning curve but I'm getting there.

I would love to know if anyone has any recommendations for engineering books etc that give the basic terminology and procedures to follow when building an engine.

Maybe it was the engineer who stamped them then. I've been over all my photos I took before I gave it to them and can't see these marks.

They are a professional engineering company and have all the equipment to do that kind of work,  I paid them to check the crank was Ok and to work out which bearings I needed.

I have all the bearings now based on their measurements, but need to work out how it goes back together.
Am I right in saying piston one would be on the left? Is this how you would normally refer to it?
I can't see the number 2  in that picture,  let alone the other con rods, that's why I sent it to be measured.

both pictures are the  same con rod, trying to figure out which way should face forward and which piston they correspond to.
You can see this one has 4 dots stamped into it the others have 3 , 2 and 1 on each one.

CB350/400 / Con rod stamp markings
« on: November 13, 2015, 08:37:45 PM »
Hello all,

I need some help with the stamp  markings on my con rods.

I am about to reassemble the crank and add the new bearings etc, but I am unsure which way round the con rods should face.

I didn't take them off to see how they go back as the engineer who measured the runout for me removed them.

They are stamped with a different  number of dots on each one from 1-4, which I guess is number 1 being the left hand side of the engine and number 4 being the right hand side if you were sat on the bike?

But should the stamped marks be  facing forward or rearward again with the engine the right way up and as if you were sat on the bike?

Any help would be much appreciated!

cheers guys.
No definitely not teaching me how to suck eggs, I'm a real newbie at this so all help is welcome.

I did buy some Joe Gibbs Driven engine assembly grease, as I was recommended to use it by a guy who builds cb400 race engines.

Cheers dave, Good point on torqueing when wet!

I think I'll just stick to using a few dabs of loctite where others have mentioned only then!

Thankfully Ive got blue loctite already, so one less thing to have to buy. Today I am going to start putting the crankcases back together.

Im feeling very nervous and cant believe ive finally got to this point i the build, hopefully all goes well.

Cheers, I didn't know that. Very helpful!

What about loctite type? Any preferences?

There's plenty of options available from what I could see, just depends on what style you like.

I went for a 90/90 front and a 3.50 on the rear, as that's the closest I could get in the Metzelers and used a set of Michelin airstop inner tubes, 18ME and 18MF.

I fitted these myself to the 18" rims using exvalvesetdabbler's idea of heating up against a radiator for a few hours on full chat. I bought these plastic rim protectors off ebay for about a fiver and two aluminium tyre levers. I put a drop of fairy liquid around the rim and partially filled the tube starting at the opposite side of the valve and working both sides finishing at the valve.  I found using my knees to hold one bit in place and levering the other side worked the best.

It wasn't, but it saved me over £100 buying the tyres online and fitting them myself and I would definitely do it myself again.

My girlfriend was rather amused when she walked in on me in the lounge while wrestling with the tyres, thought I looked like a mating gorilla!

Cheers,
What about the rubber pads in the crankcase that stop the cam chain hitting the crankcases?
I cant find a torque setting for every bolt, so just tighten it up tight?

Cheers guys, which locate do you use? Red, blue, etc?
