Title: Brake calliper piston removal

When using an airline to remove the brake calliper piston how much pressure do you use mine wouldn't budge until I got to about 20psi it went with a hell of a bang it shot up about 10feet before it came back down and clouted me on the shoulder. ::)

It's always best to use hydraulic pressure for that reason.

I did think about fitting it to the bike but laziness got the better of me.
I won't be doing that again.  ;)

The first mistake most people make is disconnecting the caliper DON'T DO IT put the ccaliper ina tin or bucket still connected and usr the master cyl to pump the piston out

The calliper was already of the bike and sitting on the shelf for years so I'm not guilty of that.

my friendly local motorbike engineer has modded a pipe with a schrader valve and he connects to his airline ,

he helped me a couple of years ago,we wrapped the caliper in cloth,and used gloves ,the piston was stuck,and with penetrating oil
we got it to move a little,pushing it back in until it moved enough to come out,

just popped into my hand with no real force,

needless to say ,a good clean and new seal did wonders,

as already said, wrap it up in something first. mate of mine lost the use of his eye by using air.

Also a good idea to use a piece of wood to limit piston travel, so it doesnt shoot out.

I use a wellington boot with a rag at the bottom, grip the top of the welly holding the caliper inside with the piston aimed at the bottom of the boot and give it a blast of compressed air, goes with a bang but no damage to piston or anything else.

Just did my CB550 like that. Replaced the master cyclinder first - filled with hydraulic fluid - took the caliper off and just pumped the brake lever - the piston and disc came out a treat.

Even better is a grease gun to pop it out. A bit messy but no fear of any damage.
