Title: stripping black paint from chrome.
Post by: ricardo on May 29, 2019, 09:21:34 AM
Good morning
I've just stripped black paint from men front rim. The chrome underneath isn't too bad with just a light showing of rust in places.
I'd like to keep the rim. If I remove as much rust as I can would it be possible to stabilise the whole surface with something. Clear lacquer maybe.
Ricardo
Ps I've removed tyre and spokes.

Personally I wouldn't lacquer anything chrome, especially wheels. As soon as you get stone chips, the lacquer just starts lifting and looks bloody horrible, water gets under the lacquer and causes more rust. Just keep the wheels clean and dry and give them a wipe round with an oily rag or a bit of WD40.

Sounds like good advice..

I would get as much rust off as possible by lightly rubbing the whole rim with wire wool, it shouldn't mark the chrome, then coat the remaining rust with Kurust, leave for a couple of hours then lightly wire wool it again, then as Julie says, oily rag it.
