CB500/550 / Forks helicoils?
« on: September 11, 2014, 08:29:54 AM »
Hi
I bought a set of forks recently that had been fully rebuilt.
New stanchions, seals, sliders all polished.
They looked good so I thought why not.

It now seems that the threads  on the sliders which hold the mudguard and top of the caliper are bugggered.
The guy I bought them from has offered to fit them with helicoils.

Can't say I'm convinced and my initial reaction just to tell him to do one and get a refund.

What do you think? Any advice welcome.

Picture below shows the threads in question -
I'm thinking this is already a weak area and drilling would weaken it further - am I right or wrong?

These are not the actual forks - just a picture I grabbed from the net

CB500/550 / CB550K3 - Fork Springs - Which way up?
« on: July 16, 2014, 11:08:20 PM »
Just changing the oil in my forks and noticed the springs were fitted with the tightly wound coils uppermost.

Is this correct?

I'm sure i read somewhere on here that the tightly wound coils of the spring should be inserted downwards into the fork leg

Can anyone confirm the correct way to install

Thanks

CB500/550 / Front Sprocket question
« on: June 25, 2014, 11:59:56 PM »
Not had a lot of time to spend on the bike recently.

Fixing the front sprocket on tonight - new sprocket, new retainer clip, new bolts.

I have looked in the manual but cant find any info on how tight the bolts need to be.
Do they need to be torqued up to a specific figure or can they just be nipped up with a smear of thread lock?
Also it seems there are no washers required according to diagrams i have seen.

Was thinking of putting some serrated washers under the bolts?

CB500/550 / Steering Damper CB550
« on: May 08, 2014, 12:06:00 PM »
I would like to fit a steering damper to my bike - anyone else fitted one?

There seems to be a lot of different sizes out there - stroke length, body length etc

Anyone got any recommendations on suppliers or specific sizes etc

Thanks

CB500/550 / Headlight and wiring loom
« on: May 01, 2014, 01:04:02 PM »
Hi All

I've recently been correcting the HUGE amount of crappy connections, split wires and sticky electrical tape inside my headlight.

The headlight is now back on and I am almost ready to pop the loom back inside - but i have a question.

When the forks turn is the loom meant to go in and out of the headlight with that movement
OR does the loom stay at a fixed postion and bend (out side of the headlight) when the forks turn.

Hope that makes sense

If anybody has any pics where their loom enters the headlight - that would be great

Thanks

CB500/550 / CB550 Rear Sprocket Cover Mod
« on: March 30, 2014, 11:48:42 PM »
While doing some  recent work on my back wheel i thought i would see if i could do something to the rear sprocket cover.

I have always thought this was a really ugly part and totally ruined the look of the back wheel.

The cover is needed for two things.
Its there as some kind of chain guide if the chain comes off the sprocket and it also keeps the oil seal in place.

I decided i didn't need the chain guide part as my chain would never be so loose that it would slip the sprocket, but i still needed to cover the oil seal.

This is what i started out with. (The sprocket is in really bad shape here which is how the bike came to me  ::) )

I wanted to keep the look of the naked sprocket

This just ruins it

So i fired up the dremel and started cutting  :)

nearly there

A couple of hours, a drill and some elbow grease and i had this

Looks much better now - sprayed in clear coat and finished

CB500/550 / Rear hub issue - 550 k3
« on: February 15, 2014, 07:18:46 PM »
Hi Gents

Have decided too pull the back wheel to replace the sprocket and have noticed a couple of issues.

There is quite a lot of movement on the sprocket hub/flange behind the bearing retainer ring.
So much so, that the sprocket side plate is wearing a groove in the collar that holds the oil seal.
Feels like the retainer ring needs to snug up a bit more but it seems tight

You can see the movement in the above 2 pics - look at he gap at the top part of the ring.
The gap opens if i push the top of the sprocket.
It would appear that when under load the sprocket would be pulled down, allowing the sprocket cover plate to contact the collar and wear a groove into it

Can anyone confirm that the correct retainer ring is installed as all the others i have seen have 4 holes - this has 2

Any tips for removing the ring (the tools i see being sold have 4 prongs) - and i take it this is a left hand thread - right = loosen

I need to get this off  to see if there is anything amiss inside

Anyone got a decent spare retainer ring hanging around?

Can anyone shed any light on what's going on - all help very much appreciated

thanks

CB500/550 / Which chain do i need??
« on: October 16, 2013, 01:46:48 PM »
I need to put a new chain and sprocket set on my bike but i'm a bit confused as to which one i actually need.

520, 530 x-ring, o-ring, D.I.D ???

What is the difference in them?

Can any of you helpful souls point me in the right direction

Only one thing - I want a gold chain

If you could post a link to something suitable without costing an arm or leg (or both) that would be great

Thanks

CB500/550 / Which Carbs? CB550K3
« on: October 08, 2013, 06:26:04 PM »
Hi

I need to rebuild my carbs (PD46A) and after looking around it seems parts are more widely available for the 069A type carb.

Is there any preference over which carbs are best.

If mine are going to be a pain to sort i may consider fitting the 069A carbs

Is this ok?
Any issues i may run in to?

Should i keep my PD46 Carbs?

Im not bothered at all about originality as my bike has been chopped about quite a lot - just want the best running carbs fitted

Any advice would be great

Thanks

CB500/550 / Lifting the bike - no centre stand
« on: October 04, 2013, 02:05:11 PM »
Just got round to thinking i would like to be able to raise my bike to get the back wheel off at some point.

Going to prove fairly difficult without a centre stand.

Whats the favourite method  - paddock stand or some kind of lift under the engine?

CB500/550 / CB550 K3 First thoughts - First Ride - Carb Issue?
« on: October 04, 2013, 12:48:05 PM »
Hi all

It seems I have a little problem with my bike.
Please bear with me and I will try to describe exactly what’s happening.

I bought the bike only a couple of weeks ago after a 15 year lay off from 2 wheels.
It’s a 79 CB550K3 that’s had the café treatment, so the airbox has been removed and its running k&n style filters and a 4 into 1 pipe. Tank and seat unit, clip-ons and rear sets complete the look.

I blatantly ignored all questions from my family asking if i would be alright on that "with my back".

On my first available weekend i proudly rolled the bike out of the garage to start it up and listen to the beast.
Petrol - check
Neutral gear - check
Kill button to run - check
Contact!

Several presses on the starter and several almost but not quites, i sat puzzled on the rock hard pad that sits between the tank and tailpiece

Bugger!

I tried 2 or 3 more times on the starter and then decided to give it a little bit of choke.

My wife alerted me to petrol peeing from the carb overflow pipes so I turned the petrol off and left it a couple of minutes.

Bugger!

I tried again without any choke this time and eventually it started after 5 or 6 more goes.

Not a great start as I was expecting a short stab on the button and the sound of a beast roaring into life.  8)

The reality was a little way from that. There was a some smoke but this soon cleared along with my embarrassment of Mrs H rolling her eyes at my last grasp of freedom slowly fading away.
Anyway the bike was idling and revving nicely – sounded great in fact and very responsive.

I didn’t get to ride it that day due to not having sorted my insurance  :(

Anyway curious about the starting issue I decided to pull the plugs (NGK D7EA) and found cylinder 4 was a little black (sooty)

I cleaned the plugs and put the bike away after the rain set in for the afternoon

Well with work and weather other things getting in the way it was a week later that I decided to take it for its first run out
Again, it wouldn't fire straight away but after 5 or 6 attempts using no choke it started up. I had to fiddle with the idle but after a couple of minutes I was able to get it nice and low and it revved cleanly.

So I took it out for the first time. I took it easy at first just to get used to her - she felt good.

I was enjoying my racer - Well apart from the ache in my wrists and my back - but we wont mention that.

I was just pootling around and after about 7 or 8 miles decided to stop and just check if everything was ok.
All seemed well apart from a faint whisp of smoke which seemed to be coming from the pod filter on the cylinder head. I understand this would normally be vented back into the airbox but as my bike is running k&n’s (or similar) the airbox is no longer there.

I also noticed a little weep of oil on the cylinder head too and could see it was coming from one of the valve adjustment caps
But the bike was sounding ok.

As I made my way back home I decided to give her a bit more gas to see how she went.
Riding a bit quicker now and letting the bike rev a little higher and again, all seemed well. I was soon getting into the rhythm of things.

When I got back into town I was riding slowly in traffic and noticed smoke was coming from the exhaust when idling, not a lot, but it was noticeable.

When I got back home I let the bike cool off and again pulled the plugs

Number 4 cylinder was very black and sooty. The smoke being unburnt fuel I suspect.

I wont get chance to look at this until Saturday or Sunday but my initial thoughts are that the float level on carb 4 is either too high or is sticking.

Would this explain the petrol peeing out of the overflow when I first tried to start her up?
Not sure which carb it was coming from but I’m now suspecting it was no 4.

Would this cause bad starting?

What could be the reason behind the smoke after more spirited riding?
Carb needle position?

I am going to check the sparks are ok at the weekend and have a manual on order – don’t really want touch the carbs until I have read the manual.

I have ordered new plugs and plug caps too, as the ones on the bike look original (NGK 5k resistor) and are obviously getting on a bit.

The weep of oil was caused by the valve caps not being tightened properly – 3 of them being only finger tight  ::)

Anyway thanks for staying with me if you read it all.
Sorry for such a long first post but would really appreciate your thoughts and input.

Cheers

Darran
