CB500/550 / Re: Diode problem maybe
« on: September 11, 2020, 10:20:49 AM »
The only purpose of the diode is to stop the neutral light coming on every time you pull the clutch in.
You can bypass the diode with a bit of wire but you’ll get the above issue. You still shouldn’t be able to start the bike with the stand down and clutch pulled in if it’s wired properly.

I wonder if a giant ultrasonic cleaner would work?

That is if they even make one that a tank would fit in.

I tried white vinegar the other week on the missus’s 1963 Vespa tank.
It did absolutely nothing but I suppose possibly there was a residue of 2 stroke oil in there stopping it from working.

I tell a lie, it did do something, it stunk the garage out.

Be careful though, the bubbles produced are hydrogen.
I did mine outside over a couple of days.

I think the trick is to leave it hours to do its thing, keep water topped up.
Think I put a bit more bicarbonate in half way through as well.

I have cleaned the tank on my RD350 with amazing results.

Wash the tank out with water then get a small tub of Bicarbonate of soda from the supermarket. Mix it with water then fill the tank to the brim, I use half the tub with full tank of water.

Connect a DC power supply, battery charger or whatever. Negative to the tank, and the Positive to a steel bar (I used an old Allen key) and put it in the filler neck but don't let it touch the tank.

Turn power on and watch it fizz, keep topping the water up and every now and then clean the steel bar. It will take a good few hours. Also swirl the tank around to removed any trapped pockets of air.

Best to do it outside as the bubbles produced are Hydrogen  ;)

I don't have a before pic but it was so bad I was on the lookout for a new tank.

This is a fairly slow process, it probably took 12 hours or so.

Just worth mentioning. If for any reason you need to remove oil pump you can do it without draining the oil.
Just lean the bike right over against a tree on a lump of foam.

Thats  how I changed the O rings in my pump, lost about a teaspoon full.

Did you check oil level with dipstick screwed in or resting on thread?

I’ve ever had to prime my 550. Maybe the wire has come off the pressure switch or the switch has died.

If you grab the wheel end and pull/push sideways can you feel any play at the bearing/frame junction.
If not pump it full of clean grease and see how it "falls" then

No play at all.

Thanks Julie,

I've just disconnected the shocks and the swing arm moves up and down freely, I cant feel it binding or anything.

It drops to the ground under its own weight.

Thanks for the info Erny  :)

Following Bryans advice I have just tried tightening the swing arm right up.

60ft lbs - still have play
80ft lbs - play has gone completely.

My question now is, was my play in the swing arm just down to it not being tight enough or is it still worn and I'm just masking the fault by over tightening it?

Have left it at 80ft lbs for the moment, haven't taken the bike out yet. Just want to gauge opinion first.

Thanks.
