CB500/550 / Re: Sticky Float Valves
« on: July 10, 2020, 11:37:05 AM »
Don’t know if this is relevant but my 66 Lambretta had a similar problem.
The modern fuels cause the float to swell very slightly.
The float is made of an upper and lower part with a seam around the middle. When the float swells the seam rubs on the carb body causing it to stick.

Brass and Aluminium listed as not suitable?
So as well as fuel lines, rubber and plastic parts failing the carbs themselves may take a hammering?

I have just had to replace the fuel lines on my 550, they have lasted just over 2 and a half years. That is around 1200 miles.

The lines had disintegrated into a slimy sticky mess with chunks breaking off. This is bog standard fuel line bought from local motor factors.
I’ve used it dozens of times over the years on classic cars and bikes without any issues at all.

Also I always turn my fuel tap off about 1/4 mile from my house. I’ve got it down to a fine art now so the bike dies as I get into the drive, so there should not be any fuel sitting in the lines but they have still gone bad.

Misc / Open / Re: Chrome paint
« on: June 25, 2020, 10:01:20 PM »
I used the Plasticote chrome paint years ago, not on a bike, but it was very chrome like. The can needed an awful lot of shaking IIRC, or it did just come out as silver.

Okay, thanks, I’ll try again tomorrow  :)

Does chrome paint actually exist?
Bought a small can of Plasticote chrome paint to refurbish my side panel badges. The can had a nice shiny gleaming chrome cap on so I thought this would do the job.

Tested it on a old broken bit of badge and surprise surprise it’s just bog standard silver paint and bears no resemblance to chrome whatsoever.

Anyone had any luck with chrome paint or is the same as tartan paint, unavailable?

Doesn’t push, bring something to manhandle it.

Dustpan and brush springs to mind.

Many years ago a friend I worked with had  a ZZR 600, we worked next door to a hardware shop. He popped there lunchtime and bought a 25kg bag of coal.
At the end of the day, he sat on his bike with his arms in the air, we sat the bag of coal behind him and duck taped him and the coal together.
He had a 25 mile ride home and got there okay.

How did he get off  :o ;D

His missus helped him  :)

Anyone else seen odd things people carry on bikes. Last year saw a Dachshund sticking out the back of a rucksack being carried by a lady on a scooter in London.

Probably the most dangerous was a guy on a bike with the metal part of a shovel in his rucksack so the entire handle was sticking out way above his head. Kept wondering what if the handle caught on a tree branch. Also another guy with a wood saw, again in a rucksack sticking out with the blade pointing at his neck.

Are you sure that it’s not catching on your boots?

Mine does.

You sir are a genius. Today is the first time I’ve taken my bike out with my new bike boots on. Usually I wear my shorter boots.

I feel a right idiot now  :P

CB500/550 / Choke lever moving on its own
« on: June 08, 2020, 04:53:24 PM »
My 1974 K0 550 has just started playing up today, the choke lever is managing to turn on its own.

It keeps rotating back and the choke ends up back on. The choke lever still makes the little click when’s it’s rotated back to its off position.

Is there a way of tightening it back up?

Standard 022 carbs.

Mine is a 550 K0 and the green earth wire is earthed to the left hand side bolt that holds the coil to the frame.

Misc / Open / Re: Why do we pay for insurance.

Insurance companies want it to go 50/50. That way both sides lose their no claims and have a history of an accident against them.
Next renewal time both parties pay increased premiums, therefore more money for the insurance companies.

I was told that many years ago by an Insurance broker.

On the subject of electronic ignition, I got mine from David Silvers. Have done over a 1000 miles on it and its never missed a beat.
