Title: USA scrap yards
Post by: Laverdaroo on June 11, 2022, 02:08:36 AM
Hiya,
As some of you know, I'm over the pond for a month rescue-ing  a fish farm in south Carolina. This however has given me the chance to get to a couple of local ish, bike scrappers. I'm going next week (prob Thursday) so if there's anything you need and want me to scout for, let me know. If any good and I can hoard some stuff, I'll ship it over in one hit so it'll be a share of the postage if you're interested. I'm not buying frames and huge things but if there's anything you want, let me know and I'll see what I can do. I can swap wattsapp piccies so you can see what I'm looking at but beware theres a 5 hour time difference to where I am. PM me and I'll do the best I can for you.

Yee Haaa  and indeed, whoop whoop etc

Roo ;)

Howdy Roo.

Best go mining for the usual headlamp ears, top yokes, bottom yokes, wheel hubs, air boxes, plastic and carbs?

I’m on the hunt for very good USA indicators for an F2 and headlamp ear reflectors.

Hope is going well for you in yahoo land.

It’s on the list for yer Phil.

All good over here but  it’s over a hundred degrees every day I find myself working at night mainly. It’s too bloody hot for a northerner out here!

Heaps done but am ever increasing amount to do but enjoying it never the less(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220611/2d0b6c9650b5d8ffdf278d0ee7ff37f1.jpg)

Keep an eye out for CB500 tool trays, you need parts that won't have deteriorated with exposure to sunlight and being outside so seats aren't any good as they'll rot for fun.

Considering the cost of 750 points covers if you see some really decent ones maybe pick them up and earn yourself a few bob. 750 covers have screw holes 12 and 6 o'clock not 10 and 4 like the 500/550 ones.

Maybe a rhino horn top yoke for a 750 as well.

If you come across a good 550 F2 seat base…snatch it.

Nice looking clipper. Is that a carp?

All the small easily forgotten bits n pieces are good, just be carefull what it looks like and where you pack it or the tsa guys have a hissy fit, they didnt like my brown bag of assorted fasteners, also it can be cheaper to pay for an extra hold case than pay postage

Its a Koshiki Gohaku Butterfly Koi. Same as all carp just with colour and longer flowing fins as dictated by the hobby market. This fish is about 4lb.......$28-ish trade cost. Nice fish but a pig to spawn. Did a mass spawning in the hatchery last week and the  result was this lot.......10million koi fry on day 3 ready to be stocked out into the ongrowing ponds that have been prepped for them.

I'm investigating extra hold luggage costs now after talking to a brit over here who does the same thing but for scooter parts. I'll see what I can do. Everyone have a think and we can get a list together. I have a confirmed appointment there on Thursday so its game on! 8) ;) :)

If you can get a pair of uncrumpled re-chromeable fork ears for a 500k2 (think they are same as 550k0/k1 - Oddjob will confirm I'm sure), I'd be interested please Roo

Wasn't someone on here trying to 3D print the tool trays Ken (friend of Ash?)

In short of the throttle return spring on the carbs. CB550f. A normal spring rather than one that wraps around the carb body ...I've been trying to find something similar locally but all the hardware shops have closed.. (are my descriptions rubbish?!). If you spot one that would be nice.

No idea what they look like, never owned a 750 and never will but I know they are rare so you could make a few bob bringing one back if you can find one.

The 3D printing of the tool trays seem to have stopped, no idea why.

Plus a genuine one will always be better.

K2 should be the same ears Phil but unsure if the US market used a different type than Europe, I have a NOS one lying around BTW. Not sure what side it is though, seem to think left.

My LH is straight and re-chromeable Ken - it's the RH that's creased in a place I can't straighten. If it's a RH I'd be interested pending the price Ken (think it would be may more than my budjei!)

Isn't that a pre K2 ear Ken? The K2 has the indicator mount in the middle of the ear? I have one ear from a k1 but don't know what side but am away in motorhome at the moment so can't check (ie, might be able to make a pair)
Thanks Ken

It's an approximation from weighing them, you're never going to be accurate when they're this small but as soon as they get to about 10mm you can send them through a counter but you'd need to net the ponds to get them out again and kill loads in the process. Bigger the fish the bigger the eggs and the less there are of them but thanks to the beauty of research students making tables for num, bers against size and weight, we can near as dammit workout what's being stocked to work out a feed ragime and to work out a feed conversion rate or FCR.
This allows you to see how you're doing and if it's what the fish need, that way adjustments can be made to bring FCR's up and more fish for your investment.

Yeah that’s a K1 ear, as I said the US did things we didn’t in Europe so I’m not surprised that they had the indicator in the middle of the ear, stupid really as it’s thin metal there and the vibrations would just shear the metal eventually IMO.

K0 ear has smaller thread for the reflector than K1

The K2 has reinforcement behind the mount extending to the headlamp mount - prevents me being able to get the crease out at the headlight mount area unfortunately

Had a proper hoot today at MIDS Salvage today. Jay, the owner used to be a rider for HRC in the 70’s and later went on to test for Suzuki in the tyre dept which stopped his career when a test front shredded at Laguna seca and he broke his neck. He was with Kevin Swantz at the time……….he limps about a bit now but as a result he invested in a building and 1500 bikes to break. I was there all day in the end and had a right giggle with them all.

Being a wet state, my hunting wasn’t as successful as expected but I think I got what I wanted. I was leaving and spotted a Tamiya model box on a shelf in the office and my jaw dropped. His late dad bought it at a garage sale of a guy who was stationed in Japan in the 70’s. His dad bought it in 1989 and paid $200 for it. It’s completely unopened with the plastic wrapper intact. It was made in 1971 I asked was he ever going to build it and he said he was probably going to sell it. He promised me first dibs

He then took me into his collection shed where he had every Honda model made in mint condition all done by his late dad. There were every model of the turbo CX’s, everything you could think of. Rotary Suzukis, H3’s, he even had some NR bits from the 80’s test bikes that he rode. What a guy.

As a result of his dad doing all these resto’s he has a massive stock of NOS parts that are all listed, he mentioned that if we need anything then get a list of part numbers sorted and he’ll check his stock. He regularly ships to the UK and he wraps them up and labels them as gifts to keep the costs to a min.

Might be worth sorting a joint list of bits folk need???(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220623/d602750866b67050406c4899d4764270.jpg)

Absolutely amazing Roo who you bump into unexpectedly! Great story and obviously a real character much like your goodself👍.
I've had a similar experience a couple of times, you go to get something, get talking and the day is gone!
I went to see a chap called Miles who owned Morgo (they make the rotary oil pumps and 750 big bore conversion for old school Triumph twins), he was such an interesting guy I was there for 6 hours!
Glad you got the bits you wanted, I bet you back there before you leave the US even if it's just to buy the model kit!

I built that Tamiya kit back in the 70's when I was a student (it beat actually studying). I may even have its remains in the attic somewhere.

Also up there is an unbuilt Tamiya 1/12 scale Honda RA272 F1 car. Apparently Honda wouldn't provide drawings, so they descended on the car at an airport with tape measures and cameras. Released in the 70's it was a rarity when I bought it a few years ago on eBay, the box photo below is from one on sale for £225! Not to be confused with the 1/20 scale version they released later, I never got round to starting it mainly because I was intimidated by such challenges as measuring, cutting and fixing the 12 fuel lines and 12 plug leads, for a start.

I should either build it, or flog it before it gets chucked away as worthless junk after my demise.

The genuine spark plug spanner is rare these days, the box spanner may be depending on what size it is.

I need a No2 screwdriver bit for my tool kit if that's going spare.

Shame that 2 of the tool trays are missing the mesh holder but still worth picking up.

Have you checked the brake drum liner for cracking?

2 x 500 and 1 x 750 points covers in decent nick, nice.

Couple of starter motor covers as well, and here's you just bought one.

Always worth picking up a 550 air box, that'll sell.

Nice pair of mudguards but the problem I can see is how do you get all that home again, it must weigh a bit.
Title: Re: USA scrap yards
Post by: Laverdaroo on June 23, 2022, 02:15:38 PM
I bought the mudguards to cut down as the bits I want is the mount on the front and the last 9" of the rear so going to trim them here to a reasonable size, that should reduce the weight a bit. Screwdrivers yours Ken, my pleasure. He had boxes and boxes of original tool kits and loose items from them all up fr grabs and the Honda wallets they go in.  the plug spanner is the right one and although a bit rough will nanny up a treat.
I didnt get a chance to check the hub out as its stuck from being sat in a damp field but going to have a small fettle today to have a look. For 20 bucks I wasnt going to say no and worth it for the rear brake arm which isnt in too bad a condition so nothing lost nothing gained for the sake of $20. Ill let you know what horrors I find when I open it up.

I've never seen a collection of the weirder handlebars anywhere ranging from 'cow horns' to ape hangers on some of the bikes in the yard. It doesnt seem to matter what bike it is, they put these awful handlebars on them. Prt from looking bloody awful they must have handled like a jellyfish on rollerskates ;D ;D ;D

Indicators for Phil, 750 points cover for Roy and the rest is to hawk and keep. The air box is fpor me if I choose to use it, not decided as yet but thought it best to grab it whilst there. The weather has taken its toll on his stock and although the air box ids have the mesh missing thats the least of the worries, that can be sorted, at least theyre not disstorted through heat or anything else and fit. Some just fell apart in my hands. I had a right hunt on but a very good day and a potential for loads of NOS bits for those that need them after his revalation that he has a warehouse full of kit all in the original packaging. like I mentioned, might be worth putting together a mass parts list of nubers to send over to him to see what he can do. Its a huge place with about 20 guys all breaking bikes and doin stuff, really impressive.

He's very much worth staying in contact with and he was in huge admiration of what the forum does and our enthusiasm to the brand, so much so he kept knocking money off, he was bowled over when I showed him some of the bikes that we all have.

I'm back in a few weeks mate and I'll drop you a line. Im coming up to Yorkshire to see a pal briefly so might be on a huge parts run to go to Phil's in York with some indicators and Roys, over the hill to drop his bits in so could maybe sort yours out en route. Ive some riding time to catch up on.................going bonkers over here with no bike, its the longest Ive gone without for 20 years! :o

If you go again try and see about some 26mm box spanners, hard to find over here. And if they have some of the toolkit screwdrivers I'd like a couple of the crosshead ones, No2 and No3. Plug spanner as well if you see one and a wallet would be handy.

Wonder what sort of NOS bits he has?

Hi Dave, sadly not. I had a Monduic and a Formula 500 but they went years ago and I've just kept the handle. Sorry I couldnt help buddy, if you look in last months Practical Sportsbike magazine they're building an old SFC I think and had a huge list of suppliers and the forum details for sources of bits. It would be well worth having a look. If you cant find it let me know and I'll get the Long Haired General to photo the pages and send them to me and I can bob them up on here. Shes working at the min but as soon as shes free Ill ask her for you.

I know Keith Nairn very well and my 120 is up with him in Scotland (Laverda Scozia) having a rebore with special pistons and rods.
The primary cover on the 120 is very rare and I'd like to find a spare as they are normally toast if the bike gets dropped!
Bet you wish you kept that Monty and the Formula 500, rare beasts indeed!

Ah, cool, well you'll know all about it then? ;D

Selling those as part of a separation deal with an ex was probably the WORST thing I've ever done! Ive not ridden another laverda except my 500's but still croon over the ones I see bobbing about. Id love another of any description but I think that might be a pipe dream.

Sorry I couldnt helpmate, have you had a look on the italian forums to see whats about? I'm sure there must be some about. Give Jay a call  at MIDS above he may have what you want he had alsorts of rare gubbins floating about and the bikes over here are pretty much disposable so there must be a stash somewhere, Jay is linked to anotjher 300 breakers and been at it for 30 years, Im sure he'll know of someone that might help you out Dave. if you need it shipping to me I can bring it back for you if that helps.

think I'm gonna need a bigger bag! ;D

Regarding Laverdas, an old friend once bought an ex George Fogarty (Carl’s dad) 500cc F2 TT bike, in Castrol colours, from Sports Motorcycles. I went with him in a van to get it, and helped him bump start in his works yard. It had chipped cams ,we didn’t have a clue how to get new ones, and he sold it on. He now has an ex Mert Lawill Harley XR750 flat tracker which I’ve also helped start and also covet, so some things never change.

Fantastic Ken, keep me in the loop and fingers crossed Ken. I got that rear hub apart last night and it looks like I lucked out as the inside is a bit rusty from the shoes being a bit manky but apart from that everything checks out so $20 well spent :) 8)

Got a reply from Jay, says he'll let me know when he goes to the restoration shop. He reckons he has some of my list which was a few of the rare items for a 500-4. Depends on what he wants for them as well I suppose.

He's super nice so Im sure he wont fleece you Ken, is it worth putting an APB out for other bits folk want and then combine the postage to make it a bit cheaper mate?
Title: Re: USA scrap yards
Post by: Oddjob on June 27, 2022, 12:54:17 AM
No I don't think I want to get involved in that Roo. Done it before and it just ends with me chasing people over stuff.

Plus, the parts I've asked for are kinda rare so it's unlikely he'll have any of them but who knows maybe he will. We'll see, I've added some 550 parts as well, indicator stems although as the UK are different I don't expect he'll have any but when I mentioned that he said he'd found a spoke set off a S110 which never went to the USA so maybe there's a slim chance, worth asking anyhow.

Did you see any of the NOS bits, I'm wondering if there were any large bits, like seat, tanks, exhausts.
Title: Re: USA scrap yards
Post by: Laverdaroo on June 27, 2022, 04:15:01 AM
Fair enough mate, I know exactly what you mean.
His whole collection of NOS bits was collected by his dad who was the seriel restorer, It wouldnt be a shock to find he has quite a few of the bits yer after Ken. Fingers crossed like!
The level of detail was superb on everything I saw it was by no means a hoarders warehouse, it was laid out to function. It was mainly boxes with bags in but there were some large boxes tucked up high, it wouldnt surprise me if he has that sort of thing. The warehouse was immense just full of orderly laid out stuff.

Well that was kind of weird,

I returned back from the States on the 11th of July where upon landing I was told that my lugage would follow in the next 48hrs. Inconvenient but so be it.
The next day one bag was dropped off but the other was due to be forwarded to me so I hung on, a bit anxious but never the less, waiting patiently for it to turn up.

Over the course of the last 8 weeks nearly, I have rung them emailed and eventually wrote a scathing email or epic proportions opening several cans of Northerner to the CEO of DELTA Airlines expressing what a 'shower of sh%t' his organisation was and that due to piss poor organisation on their part, my bag was still in a mountain of bags sitting at heathrow as there was nowhere else for it to be! I'm sure if I was a first class customer, I reckon they would have looked faster tbh!

Over the entire 8 weeks, I have recieved one phone call at 3am from Atanta asking what they could do to help.   Thats it!

Last night, I had just come in from the shed at about 2am after faffing about with bits and bobs and generally getting up to no good etc, just sat down with a brew and there's a knock at the door????

Ther standing in front of me was a knackered lookibg chap clasping my suitcase!   (Repeat on a loop inserted anglo saxon expletives
loudly)!!!! :o :o :o :o :o :o

This was the suitcase with all my diabetic delivery devices in it and all my spare meds, clothes, my favourite jeans, my dianese jacket and  all my scrap yard treasure I had spent foraging for when I was over there...................Result! :D

The only pocket that was opened was the top one on my bag and although I cable tie all my padlocks and zips it had been snapped open, all they took was two 500g bags of peanut butter filled M&M's the miserable gits which is OK I guess but do they know you cant buy them over here and that was a mean trick............I'm a diabetic you know! ;D

In total, if I had to replace everything on that bag that was just for diabetes stuff, it would be well over £14k!! you can see why I was a little chuffed. I had a set of clutch plates in ther efor my pals top fuel drag bike, theyre worth £700 on their own. I think with those and a plug spanner I got them the bill was over $900 :o Glad I'm not having to fork out for those now!!

Anyway, the upshot is that I have all my kit back that I thought was lost, all my treasure, I dont have to put a claim in for £14k+ and TODAY everyone, I am one happy chap!

As a consequence, I have several points covers and 4 x CB500/550 (I think) air box lids, two of which with the mesh still in them for  sale.. I'll bob up some piccies on the for sale bit if anybody's after one, let me know, theyll be cheap for you folk. Anything that doesnt go will get put on the bay of fleas but let  me know if you're after one.

After I've sent Sesman his indicators, everybody that asked for stuff should have it but if you're looking for anything let me know as I'm going back on the 15th for a further 6 weeks so planning on going for another rummage 8)

Top result and a massive weight off my mind,

Still in shock TBH................Today is going to be a good day! ;) :) 8)

I'm off for a ride on the bike to be smug and not get on anyones 'twig' by being insesantly chirpy ;D

Hold a tool tray for me Roo, I think my BIL needs one for my 500 which he borrowed but has never given back.

Asked for plug spanners on another thread, add a couple of 26mm toolkit spanners as well if you can. The box spanner type.

I'm writing a list,  ;)

I had a right good look for fork ears last time and forgot to say, they are as rare there as they are here sadly, all I looked at were either dented, holed, rusty as hell or already infested with tin worm. I did leave a list of stuff with him to keep an eye out for but like he says, unless someone is clearing somewhere out and wants rid they dont really come up that much. Its not like there are any crash damaged ones coming in like when there were loads about.

Whilst on about ears, I think I have two sets in the other shed (yeah  have two, proper middle class me, Phil  ;)) somewhere that might be of interest. I dont think theyre in bad nick but I'll have a mooch tomorrow and see if I can dig them out. I got them as part of a bundle and haven't even identified them, I know they're Honda but dunno what model. I think I had eye'd them up for the 400 but they were too big so might be for a 500, not sure. I'm off to see Bryan first thing but when I land back I'll have a dig about and bob some pics up on here.

MIck, do you have an email or better still, wattsapp you can send me via PM and I'll send some piccies over, you can take your pick mate they were retrieved with being able to be nanny'd up or rechromed. Theyre in not bad nickbut they are 40 odd years old so will need a bit of TLC depending on what standard your building to.That poor thing you started with, I bet seeing things go round in the cases was a relief in it'self wasnt it. Poor bloody thing, Ive never seen one as bad. Monster effort, well done.

Phil look up this seller on ebay us
bobcovintagecyclepartsllc

Phil.

Those 1978 550k headlamp ears being advertised are in fact 1978 F2 American ears. At 50 dollars plus postage and tax that could be worth having, even after the cost of a rechrome.

dont get em shipped here, wait and get em shipped to me in the states, I'm there in 10 days and I'll bring em back in my hand luggage for you., that might make it more viable for you Phil.
