CB350/400 / Re: Starter Motor Not Working
« on: March 13, 2015, 04:31:45 AM »
Hi Drew,

Starter motors generally robust bits of kit that rarely give trouble.... bad luck!

That bit of 'swarf'... if its not obvious then perhaps a chip off one of the body magnets... they are brittle & can chip. Do have a good look around - there may be more awaiting their freedom.

Agree with Tom on the sheathing issue.

(1) Your meter showing 12v off the solenoid does not imply that the solenoid can supply the 80 or so Amps necessary to spin the stater. The weeny horn switch too will show 12v coming out of it ... but no way would it supply the starter. Point is... it may indeed be the solenoid is 'worn'. To check this I previously suggested you held a big screwdriver across the solenoid 'big' terminals ... (ie bypassing the solenoid workings)... if you did this, and no spinning, then indeed it points to a fault in the starter motor, its earthing (& battery too), or main +ve lead supply.
(Presumably you're 100% happy with all the wirings, crimped connections & ALL earthings.)

(2) Yup... always biggum sparks.... even with a healthy motor. I presume before you did this, that it turned freely?  Point I'm making is did you give it a 'manly' connection before bottling out due that big spark. (no offence Julie!)

As Mike the Bike suggests, I'd just clean it all up & put it back. Try putting the spindle in an electric drill, and on a lowish speed, and with some fine emery paper / 1200 grit whatever, gently polish up the commutator. Then with a soft pick (eg wooden toothpick) scratch out all the embedded (soft) carbon from all the 'slots'. Clean all aspects of the brushes / mounts, then grease all spinning bits  all up lightly & reassemble.

I've not checked (Honda) ... but recently bought 2 pattern starter motors for my Seadoo jet boat. Came in at $49 USD each.... wow, what a bloody bargain. (they were beyond repair due seawater)

Finally, I've had my £500 deposit returned. What a bloody palaver it's been... frankly I was beginning to think it was going to get worse - ie small claims court.

Working abroad, and not able to pre-view bikes (whatever) I reckon this'll be my last venture into ebay for a while... tho' to be fair, the 'Guzzi was a big success.

As an honest chap I'm bloody baffled / disappointed at how devious / low others can be.
Ya live'n'learn eh?

Legally you are not qualified to service a bike (which the government class as a dangerous vehicle). I feel that this is a unfair situation.

Trig... explain???

Mick.. what a bloody pain, hope you get it sorted soon and get to enjoy the bike again.

By crikey Dave,

That's expensive. But honestly, we're stuck between a rock & a hard place. I too figured I could 'crimp' the 3.9mm bullets to fit... but you end up with a naff connection that you just KNOW is gonna fail at the worst time....

I ended up buying a load of 3.5mm's ..  in the realisation that I'm likely to restore another old Honda or two at some point; but in any case appreciate a stock-in-hand.

Nonetheless appreciate the UK address.... & now stored safely away.

Thanks,
Simon

Ah... and its a pain, but the bullet connectors are 3.5mm. Bloody hard to source: if you find them in the UK can you post their address here... I've always had to use the 'States...

The 400F rebuilt blog in Classic Bike mag recently quoted the tappet thread @ 0.5mm (/ turn); or 0.02"

Given all 400F tappets are set to 0.002" it implies 1/10 of a turn to set them.

Not saying its correct - just saying I've read that!

...great question hairy git! And here was I launching into complicated stuff....

Drew... assuming your battery is ok, it sounds like your relay is 'chattering' - possibly through (a) low voltage & Hairy Git's solution, or (b) poor connections, or (c) simply failing.

(1) To check the starter switch side of the circuit, take a jumper wire directly from the Red/ yellow terminal of the solenoid to the battery +ve. This bypasses the stater switch & wiring; ie if the starter spins nicely now it implies a problem there. Beware, the moment you connect these two terminals the starter should leap into life.

(2) to check the earthing side of the solenoid circuit take a jumper wire from the solenoid small post (black?) directly to the battery -ve. Press the starter button.  If it's cured the problem the fault lies in the earthing side, which includes the clutch switch.

(3) to check the solenoid, (ie if the all the above don't fettle it), then short the two big posts of the starter solenoid. Expect BIGGUM sparks - use a hefty screwdriver. Basically you'll be connecting the battery directly to the starter motor through your screwdriver... which'll be carrying 80A or so. Exciting... and don't have petrol etc abouts you.

Good luck... I'm with hairygits  idea though.

Hiya Tom.

Thanks. But unsure what your plan of action is! If you bid & win the auction you are entering a binding contract (I think)... which down the track - assuming you don't pay - may come back to haunt you? That said... in this case, you'd always have the get-out (as I do) that the bike is nothing like as described.

I'm an optimist (ha!) ... and hoping that he eventually 'finds' my £500. I'll delay posting terrible things on feedback a few more days.

But... he seems to be some kind of trader, and when push comes to shove stands to loose a whole lot more than £500. I don't need the cash 'today', ... I've oodles of time...... & I enjoy a challenge. If he wants to involve the law... then fine.

Yesterday I vowed I'd never buy another vehicle off ebay. But, my Moto Guzzi is perfect; that seller was a gent. And on so reflection I realise that t***s like this SS50 arsehole are probably few & far between.

As I say, I like to think I'm an optimist,

Update. (Not good!)

AND ANYONE LOOKING AT AN EBAY SS50 READ THIS.

Due timescales, a new pick-up date of the SS50 was agreed, Weds 04 March, ie 2 weeks after the first 'failed attempt'. Seller all charming now (relatively!) but would not give over his address / phone # 'til nearer the pick-up time'. Hmm. On the Monday he finally did, ... inc a phone number.

So, hired a van (was in Hampshire for just 01 days) and drove over to Crawly. The address a gutted cottage, next to a stone outbuilding. No one there; rang the mobile number, odd ring tone / no pick-up. Texted the #; got a reply, "10 minutes".

He arrived. Surly. Showed us into the outbuilding.... the SS50 very tired, rusted chrome in areas, lifting paint, bent pedal, small tear in seat.... I stopped looking after 30 seconds, it was crap. Luckily I had a mate...(witness)... and told him I'd not be buying the bike as nothing like the advert. He didn't seem bothered at all, and said, "No problem, we've been offered more for it anyway".

So, I queried when I'd get my (bank transfer) deposit back (£500).... he said, "as soon as I get your bank details I'll Internet it across" . We were in a building site... no Wifi...or else I'd have given him my iPad to get going on it..

As of today (Sat) still no cash, but 2 emails to my "where is it?" query blaming problems with his Lloyds bank.... "but it's coming as promised". Hmmm again.

But here's the jaw dropping bit, bearing in mind, from day #1, he's been saying that they've been offered a better price....
Unbelievable... folks, you've been warned... the ad has only minorly been changed - now he's at least admitting to small areas of rust. The no key prob is also new... likely best it's not started!

Bottom line; I don't know what's going on.... whether it's a SS50 file photo + (bad) scam, or possibly the owner won't accept that his beloved restoration has rotted into crap. I saw this machine a couple of years back, and saw the V5 Weds... the old type. A bit of me wonders if the restored moped has sat in cold damp places too long, been shunted about (bent pedal etc) and just degraded.... which the owner won't acknowledge.  Anyways, run a mile...

Mick - so sorry to hear this; my cover came off fine, but as you suggested, might be more an issue of nil prior servicing.

I actually had mine out on Weds - did about 40 miles - dear god it was chilly.
But fun.

« on: March 04, 2015, 09:43:33 PM »
Hi Rirons,

Been there... done this... two old Hondas, one with a brake lever that pulled 1/2" to full on; and the other that pulled all the way to the grip. New pads, hoses, gallons of bloody fluid... in my case a new master seal kit (DSS) was the answer. Don't particularly understand the physics..  just eventually got there through elimination.

Frustrating & expensive... but now all good. Happy hunting...

CB350/400 / Re: Tank retaining rubber - anyone got a photo?
« on: March 03, 2015, 10:12:28 AM »
Hi Drew,

Potential for scratching your tank here if levering the rubber over the tank tongue with something sharp. Read a tip elsewhere to use a couple of tie-wraps looped through the rubber ie used as pulling handles. Not tried it (yet) myself.... let us know if it is indeed worthwhile.
