CB500/550 / Wiring bits and bobs UK supplier help??
« on: June 30, 2017, 09:42:51 AM »
Hi everyone,

I am about to clean up the wiring loom having had some charging issues.
I need to know what gauge wire is used on the CB550 and what size connectors etc would be best.
I would like to replace the bullet connectors with sleeved spade connectors.. what size would be best?

Also if anyone knows of a good UK supplier that would be handy... I need a pic 'n' mix place where I can buy bits without having to buy a kit with a million things I don't need.

thanks guys

Al

CB500/550 / Charging issue! Help please
« on: June 23, 2017, 08:27:10 PM »
Hi everyone,

Just a quick one I'm in the process of testing all the components involved in charging the battery, reg/rec, stator field coils, rotar etc

When testing the resistance in the stator field coil it reads 1.3ohms minus the resistance between the probes (0.4ohms) This would make 0.9 ohms!!
Manual states .35ohms plus or minus 10% therefore if I am correct the maximum resistance should be 0.39 ohms and my readings are all 0.9 ohms!!

Can anyone tell me if my readings would mean the coil is knackered or will it just not charge properly??
I can't seem to find anything else wrong with the system at present!!

Thanks

Alan

CB500/550 / Engine temp / exhaust wrap HELP?
« on: May 28, 2017, 09:51:46 PM »
I have a CB550F running 4 - 1 with pods! (Yes I know pods)
I have 40 pilots and 115's mains and needle clip 3rd down.
It runs really good, idles fine and picks up well through the range and doesn't back fire!
My problem is it gets very hot!!! I cannot touch the rocker cover after a short ride and if I spit on it it frys it straight away! Now I don't know how hot these engines are supposed to get and I may be paranoid but it doesn't feel right to me. The points cover stator covers everything to hot to touch!
It may be running slightly lean as the plugs are slightly white but can't believe I'd be putting bigger jets than the what I have! Timing fine too!!
I also have the exhaust headers wrapped in heat tape!!

Any ideas please??

CB500/550 / Idle issues
« on: May 04, 2017, 10:18:53 AM »
I know this may be a vaugue question but I am experiencing idle issues. I have a cb550 and have completed a top end rebuild replacing all gaskets, purchased a set of completely overhauled carbs from carburettor Keith in Oregon which were jetted at 100 mains 40 idles, synced and bench tested with a 'bolt on and go' promise! Static timing is adjusted spot on, valve clearances done new plugs etc.
It starts and runs up through the rpms fine however for it to start and run in this manner I need the choke on at 20% all the time?? Idle/air screws turned out 1 revolution!
The engine is running very hot too, after a 10 minute slow ride I cannot touch the rocker cover at all as it will scold my hand and could prob cook my breakfast on it?
The project is almost complete I'm just trying to resolve this problem so I can enjoy the fruits of my labour!!
Please help!!

CB500/550 / Help Combined reg/rec
« on: March 14, 2017, 09:59:29 PM »
I have a cb550f supersport and am nearing the end of my build. I have just ordered an antigravity 8cell battery and it recommends you replace the rectifier with a modern one. I have purchased a combined one from David silver spares which means I can also lose the bulky stock reg too which will help no end with the available space in my electrics tray I have fabbed up.
So my question is the new reg/rec will plug straight into the connector for the stock reg 3xyellow wires 1x green and 1x red. However I have a white, green and black off the old reg and only the double ended spade wire left on the new reg(see pic).
Can someone tell me in laymans terms how to finish this up and what goes where exactly?
Thanks in advance!

CB500/550 / Ignition switch issues
« on: March 13, 2017, 11:48:34 PM »
Can someone please help...

I have changed the stock 5 pin ignition switch for an aftermarket 4 pin switch. I was told to combine the two brown wires on the stock harness to give me four wires to connect to the four wire new switch.
This switch has two key stages, first is a dot and second reads ignition.
When the key is in the first dot stage I get all lights and speedo lights up with built in idiot lights. When turned to ignition I lose the back light on the speedo (aftermarket speedo with built in idiot lights)?
Also when in ignition stage I get nothing on the start button however when turned back to stage one the start button works??

I'm confused😩

CB500/550 / Cb 550 motogadget m unit
« on: January 25, 2017, 06:45:09 PM »
Hello all.. I'm new to this forum and currently have a '77' cb550 supersport as my first cafe build! I'm getting through the project and really enjoying it! I am fast approaching the wiring harness and several attempts have been made in cleaning it up but I am losing patience! I would like to fit everything under the seat in a fabricated tray but looking at it every night with a puzzled face as to how it's going to fit is getting tiresome!
I really like the look of the motogadget m unit and was wondering how easy this is to fit with stock everything.. switches ignition controls lights etc! The only aftermarket component I have is a universal speedo with all the idiot lights built in!
Any experiences advice would be very welcomed! Thanks in advance!
