The Black Bomber Board / Re: 1970 Honda CB450 DOHC

We're getting 4k for this one, it was sold before we finished taking it apart. We've done well with every old Honda that we've done. None of them has taken more than a couple of hours to sell. If we figured out the hours we don't make a bunch of money per hour but it is kind of a hobby and we're having a good time. 8)

I thought I would update where we are on the CB450 DOHC. The bike is back together except for the forks, waiting on the correct seals. I'm looking forward to riding it before we turn it over to the new owner. 8)

so here is the problem, different people have used different methods with some success but none so far have worked well for me. The phosphoric acid is supposed to leave a rust resistant surface but needs flushing out, and as its presumably mixed with water anyway surely water flush is the answer. will keep trying.

I've derusted a bunch of gas tanks with EvapoRust and a diesel rinse. Never had a problem with flash rust coming back.
This 70' CB450 DOHC gas tank was all rusty inside. I filled it up to the top with EvapoRust and left it for a few days because the EvapoRust was used a few times already. I diesel rinsed it and it's been empty for over a month. Still nice and clean. 8)

I use EvapoRust and rinse with diesel. The last thing I am going to put in a freshly derusted tank is water. When you dump out the diesel into a jug let the sludge settle and pour the diesel back into the tank for another round of rinsing. I rinse at least 4 or 5 times. Never have had any flash rust with this method. The diesel can be used over and over again. Just keep pouring off the clean diesel and dump the sludge.
De Ionised water is just fine, it's very cheap, readily available and prevents flash rusting. Then swill round with diesel.

Why add a step you don't need?

I think hamfisted is an understatement. ;D
I would try to find a new set and throw those on the shelf as a last resort backup.

Here is a couple of the washers, they're 26mm OD.

To remove swingarm bushings I take 3 washers that fit in the swingarm. I grind a flat on opposite sides of the washers so they will fit through the bushings. Drop them into the swingarm so they are laying on the inner edge of the bushing below. Then I use a metal rod to hammer out the bushing by pounding on the washers. Once you have the washers made it only takes a few hammer hits to drive out the bushings. It is way easier than cutting with a hacksaw blade.
You need three washers so they don't bend while you're beating on them.

For me it was a US Army Chinook helicopter that appeared out of nowhere right over us while driving on Saddle Road on the big island of Hawaii. I was driving a Ford Mustang with the top down so we got a good look at the guys waving at us from the helicopter. 8)

The Black Bomber Board / 1970 Honda CB450 DOHC

We recently got a 1970 CB450 DOHC that is complete but rough. We are going to do all of the mechanical stuff and paint the frame. We aren't really set up to do paint on the bodywork so we will let the new owner take care of that. We just finished disassembly and it already has a new owner.

CB350/400 / Re: Mirrors
« on: May 26, 2021, 04:18:33 AM »
Our 75' 400/4 still has the stock mirrors and one is taller than the other because of the difference in mounting point heights. The 74' 550 is the same way.

I just read this and I feel sorry for you guys. I'm not sure what sorn is or how your tax system works but it seems confusing. We have a one time fee vintage license plate for vehicles 35 years and older in our state. My friend and I have ten bikes between us and all but two are old enough to be on vintage plates. Without the vintage plate system there's no way we could have ten bikes to choose from when it's time to ride.
One thing is the same though. Battling the department of motor vehicles is a pain in the butt no matter where you live. 8)

« on: March 08, 2021, 08:23:32 PM »
I'm only 5' 5" and 130lbs and our 400/4 fits me perfectly. My 94' Kawasaki Concours weighs 700lbs and I tour on it but you guys don't really need a bike you can do 800 miles in a day.. I have to wear my logging boots with heels to flatfoot on it. The best part about being this small is all bikes are faster when I ride them.  8)
