CB500/550 / Re: Head is leaking oil again. Again.

Further to the above, I've been through my Ebay purchase history at my O-ring purchases.  Based on the Honda standard thickness of 2.4 and what I bought around that time, they would either have been 2.5mm Viton (which I doubt because it's hardly any thicker at all) or 3.0mm Viton.  I'd say it's 99% definite that I used 3.0mm, which makes sense to me today as a proper thickness upgrade.  And mine definitely didn't leak again up to when I sold it.

But, you would be far better advised by Nurse Julie's experience than my recollections!

I hope this helps.
Brian.

No, as per advice from here it was definitely thicker than the 2.4 in the parts book.  After I bought my O-rings from Seal Supplies of Loughborough via Ebay (I bought various ones, not just those) I saw that Nurse Julie on here stocks and supplies O-rings, it's probably a good idea to see what she has to say on the subject.

I don't have the receipt for the O-rings I bought, but it would have been one size up I'd say.  And I bought some in Nitrile and some in Viton.

I hope this helps!
Brian.

5 x 2.4 according to the Parts book in Aladdin's Cave on here.

I used a slightly bigger thickness Viton O rings on my CB550K2, with an aftermarket head gasket from David Silvers, and it never leaked again.

Hope this helps,
Brian.
How many km since?
After doing the work I did about 2400 miles up until I sold it, I think that'd equate to about 3700 km.

+1 for Auto Aid Personal policy.  I've had to call them out twice over the years; once for my VFR750 and once for my car when one pothole burst two tyres. They give absolutely superb service just when you need it.

£60 a year, for whatever vehicles you have, and no age limit.  Vehicle age that is.  ;D

Just changed before they dispatched - really helpful company - recommended.
Once again thanks everyone.

I'm glad you managed to do that!  :-[

... and the Honda parts book shows angled caps of two different types for all four cylinders
These were original. But because most of us had to trim the wires sooner or later, we choose straight caps for 2+3 and the higher angled ones for 1+4 to compensate for the now somewhat shorter wires.

OK. Thank you.

XD05F-B-GS -  NGK Resistor Spark Plug Cap XD05F black (8072)
VD05F-B-GS -  NGK Resistor Spark Plug Cap VD05F black (8052)

Euro car parts do the spark plugs very cheap, last 4 with one of their codes cost me about £8 for 4

Those cap numbers are wrong for a 500, number 3 & 4 are straight caps  ;)
My apologise if I have misled you on the middle two cylinders Phil!

550s must be different to 500s for some reason?  I replaced mine with like for like for what was already fitted because the resistances were way too high, and the Honda parts book shows angled caps of two different types for all four cylinders

I hope you can get the correct ones sorted with Green Spark Plugs before they despatch them to you.

Brian.

Phil,

The plug caps I bought for my 1974 CB550K1 are VD05F-B-GS for the inner two cylinders and XD05F-B-GS for the outer two. They fit just fine, and look right.  Bearing in mind that my coils are in the standard position.

Those codes are Green Spark Plugs code for black plug caps, the red ones are usually a bit cheaper, if you don't mind the colur that is.

For interest, the plugs I bought are D7EA, they've been fine since I fitted them a couple of years ago.

Again, I hope this helps!

Brian.

Well Phil, when I bought my plugs and caps for my CB550 a couple of years ago the best deal was with the Green Spark Plug company.  Easy to find on Google, and they are based in Cheshire.  The plugs and points are still in my 550 and still perfectly fine, and I am in no doubt whatsoever that they are genuine NGK.

I've recently bought plugs and caps for a Suzuki GS750, and bought them from the same place.  Again, the best deal I could find.  Again, no problem with fakery but this time two of the plug caps were out of stock at NGK and took a week to arrive.

I hope this helps!

CB500/550 / Re: Cylinder barrel seating
« on: November 19, 2020, 08:12:35 AM »
......

The cylinder block doesn't hit a hard stop but sits about a millimetre or so above the crankcase.   I put the head on and softly tightened (if that makes sense) the first four nuts which closed the gap with no resistance.

Therefore I can only assume its the new O ring seals that are holding the barrel off.

I did this to my K1 a few months ago, and this sounds exactly right to me, and my bike has run just fine with no oil leaks ever since.

Good luck with the rest of the job!

Brian.

CB500/550 / Re: Front brake
« on: November 10, 2020, 02:31:35 PM »
Just finished fitting new seal and bleeding the front brake. New seal £7.00, 1 litre of DOT 4 £6.00 and the level in the bottle has hardly dropped. The rest is destined for recycling as I'm informed it can't be kept 'cos it absorbs water. Anyone need their brakes topped up? >:(
Well...... maybe I've been doing something wrong, but I've used it when it's been in my garage for (probably) two or three years, maybe more, and I have never had a problem with it.  I always keep the top on, but yes - never a problem.

It is hygroscopic (if that is the right word) and if you were keeping it in an open bowl then yes, the exposed surface area could absorb a lot of moisture I suppose.  But in a capped bottle, I really can't see it being a big deal.  Any more than it is in a car or bike master cylinder reservoir.

But that's just me!

I woiuld say that there will be far more knowledgeable opinons than mine that will follow, do be guided by them!

Hope this helps,

Brian.

Found Andy Ceepoc on ebay had stock and delivered from Germany in 3 days for £69.
I know Andy has a mixed rep on here but in this case i cant praise him enough.

I bought my Pontefract cakes/pucks from Andy Ceepoc. Even with postage from Germany they were a much better price than anywhere else, and they came in about 3 or 4 days too.  They're doing the job OK so far!

I've never heard of him before.  I had no idea he had a mixed reputation, I'm just speaking as I found.

Humour / I was at the gym yesterday......

I was at the gym yesterday and I found a hole in my trainer, big enough to put my finger in.

Unfortunately, she put in an official complaint and now I'm banned for life....
