Title: CX500 CDI
Post by: RGP750 on August 18, 2017, 02:40:23 PM
Hi All
Anyone know symptoms of faulty CDI on cx500?
Anyone have one they know is good i can borrow for a couple of days just to prove that is what it wrong? .
Modern replacement coming in at £200 from Australia so god knows what final bill would end up .
Rich :(

First, there is a black wire with white stripe under the seat near the CDI, unplug it and see if that makes any difference. Is the bike having problems reving past 4500? The problem with the CDI is that it shows the same problem as the alternator. Get woodside to lend you his but, if it is still having problems then it is the alternator.

I remember there being a testing page in the Honda manual but you had to use a specific make and type of meter or the readings didn't work. I had a correct meter bought in Yokohama in 75 when dry docking a tanker, turned out to be the right one! Sanwa SP10D if memory serves

That would be great if i could borrow it for a couple of hours to try.
it will at least prove the point.
No hurry September is fine thanks and nothing like having an original to copy.
You can have one FOC when i get them done.
I love this forum :D :D

I have one on my 300 miler Rich (don't listen to any doubters on here ...it is indeed a 300 miler). Not run the bike yet but you are welcome to try the CDi  if you wish or any other readily removable parts. I could send it with the 175 carbs you sent me to US clean. You are welcome to try the carbs too if you wish as they are already off the bike and the cleanest set of carbs inside I have ever seen on a bike. It's a 500B model ('82)

I can also suss out how to test if you wish .. I have lots of test gear inc oscilloscopes etc.. I remember depotting a failed CB400N CDi back in the day and found the discharge capacitor to be at fault, if I remember correctly.

BTW you include faaaaaar too much return postage  in with those carbs .... most of it will be coming back  ;D ;D

Thanks Ash
I' ll do a bit of research to see if there is any difference between cxA and B's (i think mine is A).
It would save Woodside the grief.
I'll copy the test page re checking one, all Gobbeldegook to me but i'm sure you will understand it.
Please keep the postage especially if you can send me the carbs/ CDI. from your cx.
The guy working for me is pushing me to ride it this year , tells me i will love it and won't want to ride that" K0 thing"  ;D

Welcome to the mad world of the CX CDI  ;D
I will message you Rich on what you need to do.

A and B run the same electrics, but I thought you had a CX500Z ?

what z1

The first CX was Z= Zero, then the A, then the B, then the C=Custom ;) and so on.

Looking at the spec sheet for that page you linked to, why not make one with higher rated resistors, ie. full 1 watt resistors instead of 1/2 watt or 1/4 watt, if space permits it should make it almost bullet proof. After all, that's the only difference between supermarket brand TVs and big name ones!

Rich

It's  basically the same as the one I made for my 1st 400/4 in 1977 but I had a step up inverter from 12>400 volts (no HT winding  on Honda Alternators back then, 1st was either Superdream or CX dunno which )  and retained the points to 'Trigger'  :D it. As mentioned in another post earlier  today I wonder if that bike still has it on, as it's still about on DVLA,   SORN'ed  ( XDN 128R ). The Kwak H1 had the same system as I built for the 400F (i.e inverter driven) but with inductive pickups to trigger the CDi

It's not rocket science Rich. You basically charge a capacitor up to 300-400volts and a semiconductor switches that voltage across a 12v coil to produce a nice fat spark at spark gap across the secondary coil

If you can understand it  and "electrisicol" ( Who is old enough to remember who used to say that) is something i cant get my head around.
A bit like me saying just core the undercut there and split the pattern there in a v8 cylinder head.
each to their own (or am i just thick :-[)   :D :D

I used to work with 5 patternmakers at one time Rich so I kinda know what that means ...sad innit  ...  .... BTW everyone knows you're a genius  :) :)  It's those rulers I told you about that patternmakers use that have non-standard scales that do my head in.

CDI update. I bought a CDI yesterday on ebay (as they appear to be hens teeth). The guy i get it from seems to be pretty clued up on these things and electrics in general and has been really helpfull .
He sent me this link and may well be usefull to CX owners on here .
I have done the relevant tests as on the website and all seems to be ok with the Stator .
https://motofaction.org/motorcycles/honda-cx-gl/
So it the CDI checks out tomorrow i will need to look somewhere else for the problem.

Sorry for late reply Woodside no internet or phone, a car demolished the
green phone connection box at the end of our drive and was dragged away by a fellow 'person of the road' shall we say.
Ash has sent me his cdi and Carbs and problem solved (i hope) Ash's carbs have solved the problem but what is wrong with mine i can't see.
I'm watching some carbs on Ebay and may go for them and cross my fingers they are ok .
It's the left one playing up.
Thanks for your offer of help , watch this space
Cheers Guys

OOH yes please, I just want to change the left hand one as i can't see what is wrong but having put Ash's
set on and it running fine i'm convinced that is the problem.
I missed a box of 4 today and a pair that went for £20 quid on ebay  as i was sitting in the M25 car park. >:(

Problem solved Hoooray!!!
Turned out to be a dodgy left hand carb . No idea what is wrong with it but solved with help
from members on here yet again ..
Ash sent me a set of carbs and the bike ran on both at last .
Good old Woodside then sent me a set he had spare and the bike is now up and running.
New tyres this week and a dry day and ride time. Cheers guys
Woodside wouldn't take payment so donation made to this great forum
