What about the clutch? At the moment I push the bike back and forth every few days with clutch pulled in and in first gear. Must be a better way.

The CB400F appears to have 3 cush drives, clutch, primary gear and rear hub. Does making one with less give in it have any disadvantages? Replacing the dual mass flywheel on a car with a solid one often works but I have also heard of increased vibration and even crankshaft failure. Be interesting to see the outcome of the Teflon ones as I think mine need replacing.

What with Zoom and "excellent" electronic communication I'm sure much office type work can be done from home. Also more people are allegedly doing their shopping online. i know a few people working from home some days who reckon they are more productive, less time spent in traffic jams. I'm retired so don't really need a car. I realise many people need one as I did when I was working but they are an inefficient form of transport as has been said they often only have 1 occupant.

Thanks very much. If it's only fuel pipe I probably have some, about 5mm or just a bit bigger than 3/16" I reckon. As regards the O ring I have some but don't know what they are made off. Will be in touch.

How critical is the condition of the small pipe and O ring on the oil strainer please? The oil pressure builds up quickly on starting but after removing the sump both items seem quite hard. If I could get them easily I would replace them but not sure where to go. I don't know whether these are a certain type of rubber to resist oil and heat.

My book says 3.4w bulbs for warning lights and speedo illumination. I was a bit nervous of putting 233 (4w) bulbs in, in case it melted something so I put in 643 (2.2w) which are a bit dim. Are 233,s ok for speedo and tacho as well as they are a lot easier to get?

First wheel I rebuilt was swapping in an 8" brake instead of a 7" one in my Gold Star engined B31. No wheel jig. (trued on the bike). Then tested it to see how fast it would go. I was 18 at the time. I must have been mad!

On the notes I got with my 400, the previous owner but one mentions fitting a new bush to first gear. Unfortunately there is no receipt for this and I can't get hold of him. So not much help except it can be done.

Just found this on recent post. Sounds as though field coil resistance too low drawing too much current.
"ALTERNATOR FIELD COIL: using a multimeter set on Ohms scale, verify the resistance between the WHITE and GREEN. It should be about 7.2 Ohms. Also check the coil isn’t grounded; ie measure between the White and battery -ve. ... it should read infinity."
That is measuring at field coil connections.

Had a 1200 Anglia that had a 'rubber crank' - 3 main bearings - centre bearing always knackered (was that a Kent or Essex or none at all?)
Kent engine. 1340 fitted to Consul Classic was even worse.

One of the first motorbike race meetings I visited was in the I.O.M. where I witnessed the RC166's and RC174's together with the 5 cyl. RC149. the noise together with the smell of Castrol R is something you never forget,
